Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

If I drop one thing I’m doing now, I can fit in 3 sessions a week of C25k. Off to recalibrate the schedule …

BB–I have left my Fitbit too. Hate when that happens.

Yoga class this morning and a 2 mi walk to the studio. This afternoon we went to a local daffodil (flower) show. I got out of the car and started to walk to the greenhouse and fell down flat on my face.

The cars were packed in and I assumed the car next to us was flush with the concrete parking bumper, but it wasnt and I tripped on the 5 inches of the bumper beyond the car. My hand and face were bleeding and I got gravel in the cut on my hand. I felt so stupid–I couldnt believe I did that. I just started to cry. My poor H started to dial 911–but I stopped him and went to the restroom and cleaned up and he got some bandages and kleenex. I sat for a few minutes and then went on to the flower show. Feeling like a real geezer.

Ouch Bromfield - that sounds so painful and exactly the kind of thing that I would do. I hope you’re not too sore tomorrow.

Oh no, Bromfield! So painful!

Bromfield, how awful! Nothing worth than feeling like a klutz - but we all have our moments!

I have been getting plenty of steps in but not a lot of organized exercise the yesterday and today - moved D2 back from college for the summer yesterday so, 60+ flights of stairs for the day (she’s on the 3rd floor!) but also 5 hours of car driving! Today was a wedding shower for FDIL (and S!) - lots of delicious salads on the menu and one delicious cake! My eating will be a little off this weekend and I MUST get some organized exercise in tomorrow!

According to Mr.'s Fitbit, we walked 13,000 steps today. For me, that included 2.6 miles in my trusted walking shoes… Tributes 75. I love those heels!

Oh no, Bromfield. That had to hurt. Hope it heals without a trace.

So sorry to hear that Bromfield. You did what we have to do, though, you got back up. Hope you enjoyed the flower show.

Tired legs this morning. Came across an interesting piece in the Post today on recovering from injury:

Yesterday I made the last item in the Plated box before the next one arrived - spring minestrone. This was one I would make again on my own - mix of leeks, asparagus, peas, pearl onions and excarole in a vegetable broth with pesto and chives added at the end. Also parmesan crisps which I just found out are super easy to make and will definitely be repeating!

Rainy day here today - glad it’s a rest day!

I saw that article, sabaray.

Hope you are doing better this AM, bromfield.

Glad I got my walk/run in yesterday. Will likely just go to yoga this afternoon, lift a few weights at home and stay in.

Ah, Bromfield, I hate those parking lot concrete bumpers. I’ve tripped on them, driven over them. I always feel like such an idiot. Hope you are feeling better and heal up quickly.

Took a Small Group Fitness certification course yesterday. Lots of interesting info on designing, structuring, implementing and marketing fitness classes for 4-15 people. It was a combination of lecture and hands on practicum, working in teams of 4 to come up with a brand, program design and marketing strategy. For the final exercise, we had to lead the class through a 10 minute mini version of what we came up with. There were 5 groups so we ended up with a very diverse 50 minute workout at the end. One of the most unique concepts was a group workout targeted for opera singers who must be able to engage in demanding physical activity on stage, stop, and sing an aria with perfect breath control. The person who led this team is a young opera singer who is also a trainer. She was explaining that opera has a growing need for well conditioned singers who can handle the physicality of their roles without compromising their artistic technique. While Musical Theatre long ago addressed this, it’s only more recently that this has become a hot topic among the opera world. Thankfully, at the conclusion of her team’s 10 minute Tabata based workout, I wasn’t required to sing! ;).

Today is a total outdoor washout. Literally. Expecting a ton of rain all day long. I’m developing nervous ticks just thinking about doing an indoor ride. Gotta do it though to stay on track. Fortunately, I DVR’d some programs with the highest production values - like Marvel Comic’s Agents of Shield, The Flash, and Wyonna Earp. That should be able to get me through anything,

Ouch, Bromfield!

A friend from the city is trekking out here - she wants to do a yoga sculpt class, which I haven’t done in a while. We had planned on then doing a long walk in the forest preserve but we have had cruddy, rainy miserable weather so we may be forced to go to lunch and have wine

Going to Naples, Fl on Fri for a long weekend (seeing my in laws for Mo Day) so hoping to enjoy 80 degree weather!

Michael- it was a year ago that we met!

Our rain stopped and I got my run in to finish out the week. We are driving to Birmingham today (just 3 hours) to visit relatives and stay overnight. It is supposed to rain there, and I’m already worried about how tomorrow morning’s run is going to work, since they live on top of a giant hill.

Interesting statistic- I know some feel like I must spend a lot of time running (and I feel that way, too, sometimes) and that they simply don’t have time to run or exercise. I ran for 27 hours and 15 minutes in April. March was 27:28. February was 23 (shorter month and sick for part of it). January was 29:09. That’s less than an hour a day, and includes the longer run/time spent on the weekends. That doesn’t include getting ready or driving if I’ve gone somewhere to run, but it really isn’t a giant time commitment.

^^^Well made point MOWC. I have looked at my hours for the month at times and sort of went - “is that all?” - but I like that outlook - “yes, that is all - so there is no excuse not to do it!”

Sabaray, I have made parm chips before - tasty and satisfying especially if you like the sharpiness of cheese - how did they direct you to make them???

Opened my eyes this morning to a foggy damp day - ugh - our weather (along with others I see) has been crappy. Not looking much better till mid week. My D from out of town is still here till this afternoon so I decided to do what is not usually my favorite - run in the morning - but I actually enjoyed it! I think the fogginess and quiet of the Sunday morning was actually good to run in - may sound weird, but sometimes I like running when outside is not busy with people all over the place! So a mile warm up walk with pup and then my 3 mile run.

Off to make waffles with fresh berry topping!

Preheat your oven to 375 - line a baking sheet with parchment - arrange 1/2 cup of Parm in four piles, about 1.5 inches wide, bake until golden and crisp (about 8 minutes). Remove and use a spatula to lift from the paper and set aside until ready to use. I had tried to make them previously in a skillet on the stovetop and wasn’t thrilled, but obviously these were extremely easy!

Yes, MOWC, and if memory serves me right it wasn’t the warmest of days then either - definitely coffee and hot chocolate weather at Starbucks! Today is Philadelphia’s annual Broad Street Run. 10 miles in a straight line down Philadelphia’s central North/South road in the city. Ugh, several thousand runners are going to be wet, cold and miserable. I will commiserate from the warmth of my basement as I try to avoid a psychotic episode from riding indoors.

Thanks for sharing Sabaray - I have done them in the microwave too - just a little trickier to get them to the right consistency and to not under or over do them!

Sabaray, thank you for posting the link! Very helpful.

The one thing it really reinforced for me was the importance of having a cross-training activity that you really enjoy (or at least tolerate) and can do when injured. I wish I enjoyed swimming more, but I honestly don’t think I’m a strong enough swimmer to give myself much of a workout. So aqua-running and the elliptical it is!

I rarely post here, although I am inspired and motivated daily by all your experiences. Today I ran the Broad Street Run that @MichaelNKat mentioned. My daughter encouraged me to train for it. Although I’ve been running for years and years, my usual training runs had been limited to 5 miles. I haven’t run a 10 mile race since maybe 1982. I took the bait and slowly increased my mileage.

This morning I ran with over 32,000 of my closest friends in a steady cold downpour. Who knew trash bags-over-running-gear was so stylish and functional? My corral didn’t start until about 40 minutes after the leaders. This threw off my eating schedule, so by the time I hit 6 miles I was weak from hunger. I walked for a bit, downed some gel, and continued on. I had to take another stroll around 8 miles. The finish wasn’t pretty, but I did it in around 1:40 (several minutes faster once I deducted my strolling times). My goal was anything under 1:50. I was completely drenched, cold, and tired. I had a blast. That hot shower when I got home never felt so good!
