Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Excellent article, Michael. Thanks for sharing! I agree that training to use power efficiently could give a great performance boost. I just put my shoes on and take off… just brute-force it or bust.

Michael - I’ve always wanted a measurement like that. I’ve always thought that HR was always limiting. A 160 HR on the track vs. cycling vs. 70% on an AlterG are completely different when you take into account total effort. I’m always amazed when I see heavier people with such a high cadence on ellipticals. Then you realize that weight isn’t as much of a factor like it is with running.

Decided to go for a run and then bagged it. I am having some stomach pains that do not feel good. Hope I am not going to end up on the operating table to have my appendix taken out. Aargh. Not what I need right now.

Oh no Bunsen - keep us posted!

I hope not, Bunsen. Not good. Keep us posted. Thinking good thoughts.

Thanks! Will keep you posted. Hanging in there. Hope it is not what it feels like and that the pain will just go away. But if it gets really bad, I will revisit my wait and see plan.

Keep us posted BB, hoping for the best!

Hoping it’s nothing serious, Bunsen! Take care!

Oh bunsen I hope you are ok.

So sorry, BB. Hope it’s nothing too serious.

Checking in because I reached the next level in my water-based physical therapy today. It’s where you do all the same exercises but with the added difficulty of the furchild trying to “save” you by sitting on your stomach, chest, shoulders, or back as needed for the “saving.”

I joke, but I was actually able to do them with her added weight! I’m still not losing any weight but I am feeling stronger and more mobile than I have in months. Still not able to walk more than a block or so without pain but I am able to swim for more or less as long as I like. The fatigue hits me way before the pain.

Still hanging in there. Glad to hear Romani is doing better!

Some humor for the runners (and non-runners, too):

^^Hope you feel better BB. Also, glad to hear you are feeling better, Romani!

Congrats to all the CC triathletes and CCkid triathletes too.

Spent the Mother’s Day weekend in NC with my kids. Walked 3.0 miles first day, played disc golf 2nd day (it’s a weird game–but good exercise. I got all my steps just by playing the course). Went to yoga with my younger D early this morning.

Had a big extended family Mother’s Day bbq at my place. Was especially enjoyable since it was the first one with our new grand-daughter and our DIL as a new mom. My mother, my wife and my sister, my daughter and DIL and my grand-daughter, 4 generations of women in my family all together. Lots of estrogen in that room.

Our closest friends and our future in-laws were also in attendance. I convinced the wife of our friend couple to climb my cargo net in return for a burger. The picture of her in wedges climbing 12 feet high and climbing over the top to the other side is a hoot. Then I got inspired to try a hip-over on my high bar and it was astonishingly easy for me to pull up and over (the parallettes training has worked) but my lack of technique resulted in me getting stuck up on the bar with my, uh, “tender parts” in a compromised position on the bar. Everyone thought that was very funny. I wonder if I should do a google search for “Hip-overs and…”.

Uh oh, Michael! Watch those parts!

BB- I see myself in those types of runners!

OK., I’m just a beginning runner but I laughed out loud at that.

Had a great Mothers Day. No kids home (heard from both), but got H to drive downtown and walk around the monuments/memorials with me. About 3.5 miles according to FitBit steps. I have been really trying to get H to be active (with a minimum of nagging on my part), so this was huge. And fun.

Too funny, Bunsen - hope you’re feeling better today! I’ve noticed I run better when I have some red wine the night before…hmmm…

D was home briefly over the weekend but no exercise to speak of yesterday other than a dog walk and laundry (some things never end). Took my mother out to lunch but didn’t eat healthy at all yesterday. No donuts though!

4.5 miles this morning under the new plan. 50 degrees and damp, rain called for all week.

I hope Bunsen is feeling better today. Please let us know how you are doing!

Yesterday seemed to be a Day of Eating for me. I don’t know what the deal was, I was just hungry all day. I guess it was a delayed effect of having run 22 miles on Saturday. I heard from both kids yesterday, so that was nice. Even with all the eating yesterday, my weight was holding steady this morning.

Michael - your BBQ with all the family and friends sounded very fun. I hope you aren’t hurting today from your hip-over maneuvers!

FallGirl - I’m glad you were able to get your husband out walking. Hopefully he enjoyed it.

sabaray - good job on your run this morning. Did you do it with your group or on your own? What was different about this morning’s run with the new plan? Sorry for all the questions, I’m just really curious about the coaching.

@C3Baker - I ran by myself. I’m not sure how I’m going to work my plan in with group running during the week. There’s a lot that’s different! My assignments are to run for periods of time, rather than “run 10 miles at an 8 minute pace” (not that I could do that). So this morning’s instructions were to walk/jog for ten minutes, easy run for 40 minutes, then jog/walk for ten minutes. I have a 30 minute workout on T/TH this week and an hour of interval type workout on Wednesday. Friday is a rest day (when I’ll work with my trainer) and then I have a two hour workout on Saturday. Goal is to do 24-26 miles this week. With my group, we are all getting out of our cars and just taking off, running the same routes at the same intensity repeatedly and for longer periods of time. Someone is always injured or hurting. There’s a log that I share with the coach with all kinds of details - now we’re just looking for patterns to develop and emerge.

76 posts to read to catch up.

BB - please check in and let us know how you fared overnight!!

You know, when you get away from this thread, come back and read it (76 posts) you can see how some people get intimidated visiting this thread - the miles, classes, speeds, dedication - wow!

Spend the long week abroad opening up our summer place. Water was too high and waves too crashy to leave me any beach to run on right outside our door. Managed 23,000 steps of walking, gardening, cleaning on Friday though. Saturday morning we went to the garden store to buy plants wearing shorts and a long sleeved tshirt with 64 degrees. By afternoon the weather dropped to 45 - yikes! Welcome to Canada! Didn’t stop D and I from splitting a waffle cone of delicious Canadian higher butter fat ice cream - though we did eat it sitting in the car with the heated seats on!

Since I couldn’t get on the beach Sat and Sun to run I ran from our cottage up the steep hill and out to the main road three times - for about 3 miles - and three struggles up the hill - not a lot of fun in 45 degrees but did it.

Busy week ahead with some things at home, a work trip mid week and then another possible work trip on Sunday for an event. Will do what I can.

It was a nice Mother’s Day here. Older D sent a video of her acappella group singing a Mother’s Day song, Younger D gave me a card declaring that I was a bad a** for being able to work full-time, run half-marathons, then come home & cook dinner every night. Reminds me of that old Enjoli commercial… but I like my daughter thinking I’m a bad a**!

The trail run was TOUGH! 1500 feet of elevation gain, and loss, over 10K. I walked alot of it & am still really sore. I came in last for my running group, but as DH says, I’ve set myself up well to get a race PR next year!
