Welcome to the club FallGirl!!!
Is your race this weekend??
Great post, FallGirl. I really think it helps to have goals other than the number on the scale.
Lying here icing my back. That BBG was a killer. I’m supposed to do weights and fluid running. Tell me not to be stupid.
The water might feel good, but I might skip the weights.
I’m back from the WSSC convention and what a 3 days it was. Five 75 minute sessions a day of Spinning workouts, Spinning technique and programing workshops, boot camps and lectures and workshops on a broad variety of fitness and health topics. So much to try to learn and absorb in such a short period of time.
Haven’t had the time to catch up with the multitude of posts! @BunsenBurner, I did note in my perusal that you are still having hip issues? Coincidently, a couple of the workshops and lectures I attended focused on hip pain. Nothing for nothing, have you ever had a full blown gait analysis done both while walking and running? It might be very informative to know if your feet cycle through inversion and eversion and your ankles have the required range of motion to keep your ankles, knees and hips in alignment and avoid compensations that cause hip pain which can appear to be structural in origin but which in reality is unrelated to whether the hip structure is sound. In addition, one of the workshops I attended dealt with techniques of releasing tension in the fascia which is mistaken as muscle tightness and causes pain in the hip flexors and extensors. You may be interested in a DVD called Functional Flexibility and Fascia Fitness by Leslie Bender. She took the glass through a structured program of trigger point release, meridian massaging and stretching which increased mobility throughout the hip and vitually eliminated hip joint pain. Was startlingly effective,
Thanks! My race is this Saturday and I can’t wait!
I plan to continue the running 3x/week and have already told my kids I’ll run in the Turkey Trot with them. My goal in that race will be to run more/walk less and beat this Saturday’s time.
So excited for you FallGirl - you are going to feel GREAT mentally when you are done! Just enjoy the atmosphere, look at the people around you and break down the mileage in your head by water stops or whatever. Before you know it, you’ll be done!
PG, I agree - the water may actually be helpful - I’d punt the weights for the next couple of days. Don’t mess with your back!
Jogging vs. Running? Running vs. Jogging? What’s the difference, what’s the comfort level? Is jogging an “old phrase” (as in, years ago)
When I first started “running” I was uncomfortable saying “I run” “I’m a runner” “I went running” - me? No, I felt I should use the word “jog” or “jogging”. Simply said, I didn’t feel worthy to use the words run/running.
Love the perspective on the slide show in the link above. Like the idea that one or the other is a mindset. Also, LOL’ing at the one that shows the “jogging suits”!!!
Wow, lots happened here while I was asleep!
Went grocery shopping with kiddo, and together we lugged 4 big bags of stuff a mile and a half. I have yet to see a single obese person here… the fattest looking folks are the guys who own the shiniest cars.
I am mad at myself for forgetting to put my Fitbit on. Missed to register a bunch of steps!
Went out for my snail imitation but then headed to an outdoor circuit class after. Started with 2 slow running laps and then a sprint lap; then one circuit of upward row with resistance band, elevated planks, lunge with overhead kettlebell press; second circuit, squat overhead press with resistance band, run stairs for one minute; triceps with kettlebell; third circuit, kettlebell hammer curl, flutter kicks for abs; and squat jumps. Each exercise performed for one minute. Then we did it all again, only 30 seconds for each exercise. Then stretched. So challenging!
@abasket, too funny - velour track suits! I almost never hear people say they are going jogging - it’s always they are going for a run. I say I’m going running - now if I could just persuade my body it was going to run too!
I don’t believe in jog-shaming
My weight trainer overslept and didn’t show so I just did some weights but lighter than normal, and nothing that involved my back. I felt hesitant to do fluid running so I just whirlpooled and tried to use the jets to “hit” the area. After I dried off, my trainer was there, looked at the location and felt it was a “good soreness” rather than injury - he used the term guarding and recommended I get a massage. Which I rarely do. But I can walk just fine and it’s a nice day so I may do that. I did cancel a class I had tomorrow. I just feel slug like but have to remind myself better I take off a few days and let it heal. That BBG stuff was hard and my friend dropped me right into the middle of it!
4 miles before work- another gorgeous, dry day. The “j” word has become a no-no among most runners. Not sure when the shift happened, but I sure do remember the velour “jogging suits”. After we all became “real” runners in the late 70s, we had these Frank Shorter track suits. They were nylon with matching jackets and pants and they swished when you ran. That’s what the fabric technology was at the time and those kept us warm. To race we had singlets that were nylon and felt like plastic bags.
Back to the pool today. Missed the last few days because I was sick and then we misread the pool schedule lol.
Only half hour but I river walked (against the current) and swam the whole time. I’m finally back to the point where I have the strength to do real swim strokes rather than the baby crawls I was doing.
Mr R has been wonderful. He used to lifeguard and teach swimming so he’s helping me get back into good form.
@MomofWildChild – in my neck of the woods, we had Bill Rodgers rain suits. I loved mine! Warm and dry for the first time ever.
I remember the Bill Rodgers suits, too. And one of the first companies to use Gortex for rain suits was called Moss Brown. The suits didn’t breathe.
My nephew worked for Moss Brown! So I had a Goretex jacket from them. I liked that too!
So… the Align Crops? Am I the only one who didn’t realize that there’s a pocket in the waistband? I found it today, entirely by accident. It nicely holds the essentials: dog poop bag and ginger chews.
Most of the Lulu tights and pants (except for the WunderUnders) have the pocket. Shorts, too. It’s great!
Nothing can come close to Idad’s apparel descriptions. (And his dinner menus too!)
Sniff, sniff. I miss iDad. Of course, I would spend even MORE money if he were still here!
I had a Frank Shorter suit and several Bill Rodgers suits. So did my husband. I’m sure we have at least part of one suit in a box of running memorabilia - along with some vintage race T shirts from the 70s. I never understood the appeal of Gore-Tex. It was never breathable enough for my overactive sweat glands.
