Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

What on earth, BB?! Also until reading that I forgot there are still places where you could still smoke in restaurants.

I’ve decided to hide my scale because I know I’m looking less and less like a balloon but my weight is about the same. So the wedding ring was a nice surprise right before going on our anniversary weekend getaway

Yikes BB. What a nutcase.

Just weird BB. Nothing like a side show with dinner!

Have a nice weekend Romani - you both deserve a nice get away!

What a story, BB!

I had to fight to get in my 10K steps today, but I did it. We had early rain and cloud cover. When the sky finally cleared, it felt like the gates to the hot place had been opened. Steamy. H returned after a grueling 30 hour trip complete with blown connections and an unplanned night in Toronto. So much glamour in his international travel. Not.

An article in our paper today summarized a convenient dish I do often: the bowl meal. The basics incorporate a grain base topped with a protein, sides, and assorted condiments that give the meal some zing. Today I made a garlic and tomato flavored quinoa base, and topped it with small portions of diced braised chicken, pinto beans sauteed with olive oil and herbs de provence, chopped cornichons, marinated tomatoes, fresh basil, cilantro, and mint, a bit of grated cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil and a syrupy balsamic vinegar. The bowl ingredients get mixed lightly to blend it all. The portion sizes aren’t huge, but they’re satisfying, especially with all the different flavors, the fibrous whole grain base, and bits of fat and protein. It’s also a great way to use leftovers.

Keeping the very tired H’s heart health in mind and after a walk, dinner was a piece of roasted salmon with a mustard honey glaze; fresh corn kernels sauteed with lemon zest, basil, and toasted walnuts; a mixed green salad; and a glass of wine. I think what’s key for cooking for him (and myself) is trying to cram as much fresh flavor into the food as possible using enough healthy fat, fiber, and protein to make it filling/satisfying.

It all sounds wonderful, Plantmom.

Yikes Bunsen…for a minute there I thought your friend was going to invite you to join him for dinner the way the story started! Guess he wasn’t the chivalrous type though.

PlantMom, I love bowl meals but yours sound far more creative than mine do - thanks for linking that article, has some very good suggestions. I did not eat well yesterday -breakfast yogurt, grilled chicken breast for lunch with some salad, but finished the day with a bacon cheeseburger and a beer. No wonder my stomach isn’t happy this morning!

Dog walks and a Pilates class planned this afternoon; long run tomorrow followed by a “fun” Barre class. Ha! Mr. Sabaray informs me that my idea of fun and his are completely different. We’ll get him converted.

Wow, @BunsenBurner, just Wow!

Off in a little while for a weekend wedding in NH. It’s actually at the family camp where our D’s wedding will be next year. D & I will be taking notes … Tomorrow morning I plan to “run the island,” which will be a nice change of scenery.

Happy weekend to all.

Sadly, he was not a nutcase… apparently, a typical “new Russian.” They are abundant here in Scandinavia - “shopping tourism”. You will not see these types wasting time and money on Vasamuseet because they are busy spending their money on material things.

Not very intellectual but loaded with cash that was most likely illegally gained - and yet likes to steal whatever he can. Like the “free” meal he got at the steak house!

Ended the day with 19,500 steps (plus 3,000 morning ones, so I walked more than 22,000 steps in a 24-hr period, and yet I do not feel like I walked that much)! I do not expect to get as much today… Will be mostly sitting  Saw Charge HR on sale at the airport’s duty free shop. There were no people in line for security, but to get to the security, you still had to walk through the maze. We joked that the security access was sponsored by Fitbit.

Finished off the work week (working from home today) this morning with a 30 minute run. Also baking some homemade bread - the overnight easy rise one - lemon herb w/some crumbled mild cheese - a slice of that plus some scrambled eggs and bing cherries will be breakfast! Breakfast is sometimes my favorite meal of the day!

Well that guy sure made for an interesting story, BB!

I have never heard of bowl meals but that sounds terrific, Plantmom.

I am still trying to get H to walk with me and have had some success. This was a tough week as I had a few late nights at work. He is cooking a lot of fish, lean chicken and fresh veggies though so meals at home are healthy.

Short walk today as it is so beautiful I needed to get outside.

I guess my Bi Bim Bap which I eat at least once a week for lunch is a bowl meal! It’s a Korean dish with lean Korean beef, veggies, rice, a fried egg and some hot sauce. It is so good!

I love spicy food - we have a Bonchon that just opened recently that I am eager to try. Of course they have chicken but they also have quite a few “traditional” Korean dishes - like the Bi Bim Bap which always sounds so good when you describe it, MOWC. Can you tell I like to eat?

Beautiful morning here as well - even on “rest” days the dogs make sure I get some exercise. I haven’t been as diligent about wearing my Fitbit as I should be.

Chipotle is my original “bowl meal”. And I admit to loving it!

The layers are obviously what makes a bowl meal interesting and delicious. The bottom layer - rice, quinoa, pasta -whatever - is the least interesting layer for me. In the summer with all the fresh vegetables I would say we do a lot of “bowl-ing” - except sometimes it’s on a plate! A little pasta, stir fried veggies, a grilled protein and then - a sauce of blend of sauces - from a grape tomato/olive oil blend to just olive oil/garlic/butter (watching those quantities!!)

Sort of think of it as a “chopped salad” - that’s not! But lots of layers of goodness.

Speaking of bowl meals, I have a hankering for some chirashi, but I am smart enough not to touch raw foods while traveling.

Okay guys - new study shows fat is good for you!

When Runner’s World announced the Memorial Day to July 4 streak challenge, I thought I’d try it. After all, MOWC can’t be the only streaker on CC, right? I’m now 12 runs into the challenge, and finding it much more rewarding than I’d expected. I honestly thought it would be a painful slog to get out there every morning, but I’m finding I feel stronger and it seems easier as I go along. I have a 10K race tomorrow morning, so this morning I went as slow as I could… and it was still a respectable pace–with a nice low heart rate, too.

Wish me luck for tomorrow! I haven’t done a 10K road race (as opposed to slow trail run) since 1980.

Good luck dmd! I’m glad you are enjoying the streaking. It really gets to where I don’t even think about it. It’s just going to happen! I start to think about it when I know I have an early flight or something else that I have to work around.

There’s a hilarious article on the front page of today’s WSJ about Fitbit cheats and the different ways people can rack up steps without really doing them. They put the FitBit on a hamster wheel or a power tool etc. Corporate fitness challenges have led to creative ways to “win”.

Bunsen - saw this and thought of you & Mr. B:
