Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Stay strong, CountingDown. Grab your carrots and celery and relish in the beautiful crunch it makes with every bite. You’re doing it for you and not for them. A couple weeks ago someone at work “poked fun” at how they always hear when I eat apples, carrots, broccoli, etc,; however, I found it odd how they never noticed when others ate chips and crackers.

Don’t you guys hate it when you get a random non-exercise induced injury? I’ve been hobbling for weeks with no idea what brought it on. My guess is that maybe I slept funny and it triggered a hurt disc from 8 months ago. I stopped taking pain medicine because I didn’t want to be on it for so long.

@Niquii77, that’s really frustrating. Given your prior disc injury, have you ever had a full postural and movement assessment done by a really good Physical Therapist? Sometime we develop all sorts of compensations, particularly if we have suffered injuries, that create problems when we least expect it. If you find yourself having back pains, hip pains etc for no apparent reason, something of that sort could be going on.

@MomofWildChild – I’ve been a swimmer since I was four (I could swim before that, but at age four, I started to enjoy it). I swam (but was slow) on high school and college teams. My form is very good–I’ve impressed instructors–but I’m ‘slow and steady’. I don’t use swimming as a “real” workout, though–for me it’s a very relaxing recovery from running or cycling. I swim long and tall and always come out of the water feeling relaxed and refreshed. Still, I’d like to get back to the twenty minute half mile I could swim in high school and college.

Thanks, everyone. Your comments mean a lot to me.

DH and S2 say they don’t want to sabotage me, but then they eat at 10 pm (which is my peak munchie-craving time), and it’s all too easy to join them. If they ate healthfully and earlier, it would be easier. I generally wind up having my main meal at lunch, which means I’m eating out almost every day. That’s a mixed bag at times. I’m also a stress eater and my stress levels have definitely gone up since I started working again.

You all are right – I know what I need to do. I really, really fight taking care of myself.

Here is a must watch exercise video of how pushups should be done properly. Watch the dude on the right side of your screen… he is good.

Swimming is a great recovery and relaxation exercise. I miss it sometimes.

Mr. Sabaray wanted to go out to dinner last night, but I beat him to the punch by picking up Panera salads for dinner. I had a watermelon and feta salad, which shows 29 grams of sugar but I doubt it’s all added sugar, given the watermelon. It was very good, surprisingly! No bread, either!

45 minute run this morning with some sprinting and skipping intervals - HR was way too high, but it was 66 degrees and 100% humidity. I sweat a lot and let me tell you, a light gray wicking shirt is not a good look.

Feeling much better today about life - just affirming to myself I was going to take control of even one area of my life makes one’s outlook that much better. Time to walk the pups!

Hugs, cd. It’s hard to eat healthy and work out and even harder when the people around you are not supportive.

One thing that helps me is knowing that I have a group of friends here who are supportive, helpful and positive. Keep the folks here on this thread in mind when the snarky comments come from others. We are with you.

Weather report from Tennessee (I know you are on all the edge of your seats)- 75 and 90% humidity. It’s pretty awful. 3.7 sweaty miles done.

Believe it or not, I love hot/humid. My wife hates it. I know I could retire to Florida. I grew up without AC, so I like the sweat during the middle of summer even when I’m not working out. Plus I think if I ever complain about the heat, God will give me an extra cold day in the winter!

Trying to decide between a track meet or a downhill mile this weekend. Would like to bust a 400 on the track, but the appeal of a good mile time is tempting too.

“DH and S2 say they don’t want to sabotage me, but then they eat at 10 pm (which is my peak munchie-craving time), and it’s all too easy to join them.”

Are there healthful munchies you can choose at that time? Maybe plain popcorn? Celery / carrots, with a little bit of hummus? Just thinking out loud. Obviously you know better than we do whether your better strategy is to join in with healthy snacks, or avoid it altogether.

I had a good 10K run last night. It was hot and humid, but not unbearable. Tonight will be a shorter run with the running club. There is a local 5K run on Saturday and there is a group within the running club that started the Couch to 5K a few months ago in preparation for Saturday’s race. It has been fun to watch them progress each week.

dmd - I can’t imagine doing that distance of swimming, let alone feeling relaxed and refreshed afterwards. I really need to learn how to swim. I mean, I can swim well enough that I won’t drown, but I look like I’m flailing around when I’m swimming and it would be a real stretch to say that I have any kind of a stroke technique.

sabaray - I’m glad you’re feeling a little better about getting control of your life. Thanks for the recommendation on the watermelon and feta salad at Panera - I almost ordered that last week, now maybe I will give it a try next time. H is allergic to watermelon so we never have it at home and it’s something that I really like. Also, I loved your comments about your mom trying to “help” you ON YOUR DIET. She doesn’t get it, does she?!

CD - I hope you can figure out ways to stay true to your healthy goals and it’s good that you know that your H and S2 aren’t intentionally trying to sabotage your eating.

CD - if it makes you feel better, just because we participate on this thread doesn’t mean that we are perfect  I had a bad eating day yesterday. Just have to pick myself up and move on from it, and re-commit to strategies. You can do it!!

And I gave myself permission to skip a morning workout today. It’s ok.

CD, if the late night snack is a bonding ritual, could you do something weigh them other than eat? Like drink a glass of milk or ice cold water or carbonated water? Be there and have your thing but not whatever it is they are eating?

I love a long swim. It is meditative. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/17/opinion/sunday/pool-neuroscience.html?_r=0

I try to keep my hands busy while they eat (sewing is helpful), but their dinner smells so good…I’ve found that if I eat after 6-7 pm, I don’t lose weight. I’m a night owl, though, so the late night munchies are hard for me. I stay away from the frozen dairy confections at home, we don’t keep chips in the house, and a donut has not passed my lips since April 10, 2011 (when I started this journey).

Pasta, bread and fruit cobbler…my downfall.

I think I need to cut back on the iced tea. The artificial sweetener I put in it seems to make the food cravings worse.

Will take the suggestion to do more than just read along here, and post more often. Past two days have been good. Tomorrow I fly to Chattanooga. Plan to have some healthy nibbles with me.

That’s an excellent start Counting Down! Safe travels! Think of us all sitting on your shoulders CHEERING you on!

It’s 7:40 and I have to head out to exercise - can’t do it tomorrow morning or evening. It’s 81 and I don’t want to go. Give me a good reason I should!!! (I will go, but man, I don’t really want to!!!)

Tired today. Came home to take a 2 hour nap. I probably take a nap at least once a week at work.

Track workout tonight. Football practice going on. Motivation for this old man to perform in front of all those healthy teenagers.

CountingDown- I wish you were coming to Nashville! Ohio- I’m jealous that you can nap at work. I would love to just have about 10 minutes sometimes to shut my eyes, but except for the bathroom stalls there isn’t a good place. I have an office, but it has a lot of glass. We have a couple of headache rooms but they don’t have comfortable chairs. I’ve seen some people go out to their cars for a nap, but that doesn’t work when it’s 98 degrees outside!

I had to run errands after work and stopped at the grocery - going through the “healthy” aisles I saw quite a few of those “ice creams” - Arctic Zero, etc. I didn’t buy any - believe me, if I’m going to have ice cream, it’s going to be the good stuff - but checked out the labels. Sugar was relatively low, but there was another product “sugar alcohols” - what are these?

Good day today - yogurt with banana, raspberries & blackberries; hard boiled egg, leftover grilled flank steak and raw carrots; and two small tacos on a flour tortilla with guacamole, salsa and cheese as a condiment. Nice run this morning and two pup walks. Run and Pilates tomorrow morning before work. This healthy stuff is killing me!
