@PlantMom I’m having problems running in our unusual to us humidity here in Northern Michigan. No way could I do it in Florida. I’m so slow that any slower I’d be walking. It’s humbling
I have been doing a few running workouts that are described as having plyo intervals, although I’m not jumping off boxes or anything of the sort. After warming up, every five minutes I alternate a burst of either sprinting or skipping for 10 to 15 seconds, then a slow run to recover. I actually enjoy these workouts, nice change of pace (pun intended). As Michael described, definitely engages different muscle fibers!
I hope it’s cooler up north, deb - headed that way tomorrow. PlantMom, I’m with you - that owner needed a workout!
Edited to ask @FallGirl how she is feeling?
Florida is brutal- much worse than even here! Besides Plantmom, I have a marathoner friend in Miami area who is doing her 20 mile runs on the treadmill. Ugh.
Ugh indeed. My personal treadmill distance record is 18 miles. It is not a happy experience.
I think mine is 8!
Managed to finish race four of my five race trail series. 1140 feet of climbing total in two laps of 2.5 miles each. I managed to a) not trip and fall, b) not get lapped, c) not finish DFL, and d) actually enjoy the downhills and hit a nice rhythmic stride for them. Hoping for a flatter course next week! And the not getting lapped part is a big deal–there was a guy there who’d run in the Olympic trials! (He was telling a friend about it and I was eavesdropping.)
WOW, dmd! Not being lapped by an Olympic trial qualifier is a major win in my book. Great job!
It was HOT in my neck of the woods. I suspect it was quite hot there, too, for your run. Even more kudos.
Way to go, dmd. That sounds like a hard race series to me!
Well, DH googled the names of the top five or six men and none showed up as Trials qualifiers so I’m not sure what the true story is… However, looking at the results this morning, the winner finished in exactly half of my time! My second lap was slower than my first.
Maybe that person was a chess Olympiad qualifier?
Or trials in a previous year?
3.1 extremely humid miles this morning. It’s been raining off and on, but hasn’t cooled down. Feels Florida-ish.
Thanks for asking about me, Sabaray.
This is turning into a major lesson on being patient with my body. The cold ( tested negative for flu and strep) has moved down to the chest. I am going in to work and sleeping OK, it have not been able to run or go to yoga since last Wednesday. Trying to walk a few miles in the mornings before it gets hot. The last time I was this sick was 20 years ago. So I keep telling myself that this shall pass.
Yikes, FallGirl. Hope you will get better soon. There is definitely a nasty summer cold traveling around the world. My kid on the other side of the planet got sick, my friends in CO got it, I am seeing a lot of sneezing people on the bus.
@FallGirl: No yoga!! Yikes. Feel better soon.
Taking today off–Need to get vacation place ready for renters. Mostly it is packing up all our junk and taking it to storage. It is always more work than expected. Plus, doing stuff that I hate–like cleaning the grill and the oven and emptying the fridge. The good news is–the rental for a month covers our expenses so it is silly to complain. At 7K steps before noon.
Sorry your cold is dragging on, FallGirl.
FallGirl, been there done that this summer - and it stinks! I hope you can feel like you are turning the corner soon - great effort getting out for some walking miles at least!
Plantmom, YIKES - I first read it that the little whipper snapper pup DID bite you and cause you to crash. As a dog owner, I don’t understand - if you have a dog that is likely to run, WHY is that dog even out without a leash?! Not safe for the dog either!
Sabaray, I hope you enjoy your northern vacation where every you land. I think the weather is suppose to cool down a bit this weekend - in a good way!
Hopefully out of the car for a little while now. Had a three hour drive down to Columbus and back in less than 24 hours, part business, part pleasure. 30 minute run last night after 8pm - still 84 and humid - I am really over that heat in the evening business! Full disclosure - especially after talking about night eating on here yesterday…we MIGHT have been seen at the local Jeni’s Ice Cream shop after 10:30pm having a night time snack (after that run) - Sabaray would approve that it was high quality ice cream - one scoop, Sweet Corn and Black Raspberry and one scoop, Whiskey and Pecans. Every bite WORTH IT.
Will also say that I knew going into the day that Jeni’s would be in the picture that day so ate accordingly and WELL the rest of the day.
Low back pain exercises anyone?

5 miles on hilly trails. Embarrassed myself tonight. Need to incorporate hills into my routine.
Hope you’re feeling better tonight, FG.
I’m over my encounter with the little nasty doglet. Frankly, I’m surprised it could run so fast–mad yorkie-like critter, at a sustained 16 mph! Could have been a pokeman.
Today we hit 99-100 degrees. When it was cooler in the morning at only 90, I took my camera on a walk at the local nature preserve. This afternoon I ran at the gym for 4 miles, incorporating short slightly faster intervals, and stretches at a slight incline. H and I walked 2 miles tonight–97 icky degrees! This weekend I have planned 8 miles for my long run, and I will do it on the treadmill!
100 degrees and outside vs. balmy air conditioned room but on a treadmill. I agree with your choice of the lesser evil, PlantMom.
