Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Classof2015 - I think that YOU are “FastMom”. Congratulations!

writeandrun, welcome! If you stay healthy, you will be able to reach your goals!

@Classof2015 – I run a lot of small local races. Some of them are measured using Strava or maps or someone running with a Garmin. Some of known wheeled and carefully measured local courses. Some are even certified. If I think the course is short, and it’s a small local race, I ask the organizer how it was measured.

Congrats on your race, that’s an amazing improvement year over year!

MichaelnKat – thank you – so like a long training run. Now I won’t be up at night, worrying about ohiopublic

Thanks busenburner, abasket, FallGirl, dmd77 – that’s what this thread is about – the support which I truly appreciate.

Hey writeandrun-- are we the only people who bring note cards on a long run in case inspiration strikes? I use my phone a lot (the notes app). On one long lonely run, I was trying out log lines (25 words max) which helped pass the time. Good luck to you in all your running and writing endeavors.

Thanks BunsenBurner! Running 26 miles in a row is so much easier than staying healthy for four months.

And Classof15, have never written anything down mid-run, but that’s definitely an idea! Usually I’m just trying to get everything I remember onto my phone while I stretch after. Log line seems like a great way to kill 20 miles, too.

3 mile run (no walking) this AM. Plan to go to Twilight yoga after dropping of kids at bus and airport.

I found a New Year’s Eve 5k that is the same place/ same course as the Turkey Trot. I plan to wait until a week or so before so I can check the weather forecast to see if I want to run.

Did 9 miles yesterday morning, then came home & basically slept ALL day. I’m not sure what that was about, but it sure felt good. It didn’t hurt that it was pouring rain out. I feel back among the living today & quite refreshed.

Tiring travel day yesterday and I had to really short mileage days this week due to the travel (2 days of 2 miles). I wasn’t feeling like catching up today, but I did 7.1 miles for a 36.1 mile week. It felt a lot easier to run at 800 feet than at 7000!

We are probably getting another senior Golden this afternoon. I’m excited. H is a little less so. He wants to do it, but it’s a lot of work for him. Her name is Dutchess. We probably won’t change her name since she can still hear!

You must have needed the rest, Gertrude. You had quite a few Thanksgiving guests, if I recall correctly!

Looking forward to hearing about the latest addition to the WC Family’s retirement home. They are lucky pups!

Did a hilly five miles yesterday with the group; exhausted from errands with D the past two days. Today’s a rest day.

MOfWC, you are a doggie saint! Duchess is one lucky pup.

Did some yardwork yesterday in the breaks between downpours. Wanted to ride my elliptibike but did not want to get wet so canned that idea. We’ll see how the weather behaves today.

Gertrude- it sounds like you were exhausted! I am not good at napping, which is a bad thing. I wish I could do better at having down time.

I heard about all your rain, Bunsen! Hope you can get outside soon.

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical machine this morning and a flow yoga class yesterday. Will probably do a restorative yoga class later this evening.

All but two of our guests have left!! I love having all of them, but it’s exhausting. I’m not that good at delegating–I have this mistaken view that I’m the only one who knows how to clean-up properly (I know, I need to get over it!!) The good news is that we went out to dinner last night and the guests treated H and me to dinner. They even ordered 2 bottles of nice wine. There’s hope for the future–all of these guests were under 30, with the exception of oldest D and her husband (32 and 33).

Did a nice relaxed ride today; it was so good to be outside. My riding partners for the day were a retired elite level pro coach and one of his former racers who now spends all her bike time commuting to work, doing fun recreational rides and mapping out and test riding the routes for the Ride for the Homes annual June charity ride for Philadelphia’s Habitat for Humanity. She is still like a machine on the bike and both their bike handling skills are from another planet. I watched her peel a jacket layer off as we rode and her line of travel could have tracked a road marking divider line without weaving off of it even a half an inch. Just amazing. Every time I ride with them I learn something and am just inspired.

She was filling me in on the 2017 Habitat ride. First full week of June, Thursday - Sunday, 50-55 miles per day with an option each day to add a loop for an additional 10-15 miles which will be open to anyone who completes the regular route by certain designated times. I’m really looking forward to it, having done the ride it’s first three years and missing last June’s ride because I was at the Spinning/Mad Dogg conference with my daughter and several of her studio instructors.

Congratulations to all the racers, new and old, who ran their events over the Thanksgiving weekend. Sounds like there was a lot of fun and successes.

MOWC, it is so heartwarming that you open your home to all the AARP eligible dogs that you do. They are always the hardest to adopt out and you and your husband really do a good deed.

It was quite a beautiful day today for late November - glad you could get a ride in MK! I was out most of the afternoon Christmas decorating - the neighbor hood was bustling with others doing the same, leaf blower/lawnmower noise and kids out on bikes, in strollers, etc. Love it!

After I completed my outside decorating (inside yet to go - next weekend!) I went for my favorite dusk run. Really fun to run at dusk right now and see everyone’s outside lights!

It was great having 5 days off.

So glad you were able to get out, Michael! Second day of epic rains kept me indoors. :frowning: But the upside is that my class paper is almost finished, and my house is in a decently clean shape. And the laundry done.

Hang off of the TRX a bit… the tortie cat thought I was weird.

Hey Bunsen, if you want to hang off a TRX and get exposed to the latest gear and training theories, come to the IDEA Fitness Conference in February in Bethesda Maryland! My daughter and I will be there.

Age is just a number

Ohio, I bet you were happy after THE game!

Brutal run this morning. Ended up doing a hill workout with two of the ladies from my group. We split - one group doing an easy run of 6, the others doing hills. I decided to bite the bullet and get the hills in. We ran 2.5, then ran up a hill, walked down, ran to the next hill and up…you get the idea. Ended up with 7.25 miles and I am glad that’s over.

Running is stupid.

You are tough, sabaray!

I only had time for 2.1 miles this morning because of getting the new doggie situated. It was VERY windy (which I hate), so I wasn’t that sad to run out of time. More tonight on the dreadmill.

I forgot to mention the article in WSJ last week that I read. It said the new big thing in fitness equipment in gyms is the stair steppers. Not the stairmasters as we know them, but the stair mills that you actually climb. I guess they must have improved them since those giant rotating stair case things that no one used. It said it was the fought over piece of equipment now because it is so efficient and hard. Michael- thoughts?

Early morning long walk with the pup yesterday in my hometown – 32 degrees. Caught a decent photo of the sunrise. Back to the gym this morning; 3.8 mile run. Street cleaning on the even sides in our neighborhood today, so I had to park pretty far from home when I got back. (I did manage to parallel park my SUV into a space not much longer than the vehicle, so that was a win.)

Kudos to you and H for adopting another Golden, @MomofWildChild. Talk about a lucky dog! My gym has a stair climber – you have to attach yourself to the thing with a strap.
