Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks for the links, bunsen.

Speaking of workout clothes, I saw these on the Athleta site:

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=46713&vid=1&pid=212393002

They aren’t on sale, but I was looking for some shorts like that for warmer weather running and I had a gift card. They reviews are really good and I was afraid they would sell out if I wait.

^^^PLEASE report back @FallGirl . LLBean stopped making the sport shorts I loved - lightweight, inner lining and a perfect length - not long, not shorty-short. I would pay $49 for those. Wondering how the weight is.

Did the hot yoga class. I was pretty miserable at first, but soon after the first few poses, I started to feel better and to my surprise my cold systems (sniffles) just stopped and I got through the entire class. Wow–I was really surprised at how good I felt afterwards. I don’t know if the decongestant really kicked in but I was a happy camper. Going to go to bed early and try to fight this office.

Welcome to all the new folks who’ve joined us. This is a great thread.

Fingers crossed for you, Bromfield!

I too woke up last night feeling dehydrated and hot… my muscles were achy, flu-like achy… took some Advil, drank 16 oz of water, and went back to sleep. I hope my minor sniffles do not turn into anything major! We are going on a trip in the near future. Not a good idea to get sick, especially with holes in the belly that have not yet completely healed. Knocking on wood, I feel allright at the moment. Just itching to grab my dumbbells. No go, says Mr.

BB, I hope you slept off that achyness and woke up feeling better! A trip to start off the new year sounds marvelous!

Lululemon cancelled my run for cold pullover yesterday, it popped up today on WMTM, I ordered it again. We will see if it goes through this time.

^^How odd!

Today’s big win was going to work and getting back to a normal breakfast. With kids home over the break breakfast became a bit of a carb fest - homemade muffins, waffles, coffee cake, etc. My egg and yogurt with almonds/apples tasted SOO good today!

My cold weather hiking continues but having some difficulties with icy conditions. Was at the lake this weekend and even the roads were treacherous.I did manage to get a minimum of three miles daily and one 6 mile. I may have to readjust and do some indoor walking on the dreadmill. Didn’t get out yesterday as I have a stomach bug and haven’t been been able to leave the house. Had body aches and chills. I know I was definitely dehydrated. Managed to keep down a popsicle last night. :frowning: Hoping I can do something this evening.

Hope you feel better, NMinn- and Bunsen!

Well, I, too, am back at work and back in my routine. WildChild left this morning. I’m sort of glad to reclaim my normal patterns. Weight wasn’t bad. I came out about where I went in to the holidays, surprisingly. I still feel yucky from all the sugar and junk. 3.1 miles this morning in 58 degree gloom. Did it!

Raining cats and dogs here this morning so I headed for the gym. Did 35 minutes of intervals on the elliptical, then ran 1.3 miles on the treadmill. I even did a cooldown and stretched. I’m really going to try and be kinder to my body this year. I signed up for a full-year membership at the Pilates studio, but only eight classes a month. I will still do private training and am adding some group Reformer classes, but I need to permit myself some rest days.

My big focus this month is going to be a sugar detox. While I wasn’t terrible last month, I still ate more added sugar than I would like, so this month is all about avoiding it. Mr. Sabaray is off to a good start - last night we grilled marinated short ribs and served them with brown rice and baby bok choy.

Hope you’re feeling better, Bunsen - but let yourself rest and heal before you pick up those weights!

Gloomy drizzle here in CT this morning - supposed to pour later. Hopped on the treadmill for just under 3 mi, then took the pup out for a 2 mi walk as soon as it was light enough. Ended up with one wet smelly dog! Hoping to get in the habit of strolling on the dreadmill (love that term, btw) while watching tv tonight.

MOWC - yes, back to work and the routine. Not thrilled about the work part…but looking forward to the “routine” part. Since Thanksgiving everything’s been so…not routine!

I am aiming for serious sugar reduction. I will still put a little honey in my breakfast mush that I make, but will cut out candy, cake and other sweets like that. It’s a start…

i really hate the gym. it depresses me so I’m extremely concerned about staying on this fitness plan when I’m at work from 6-6 daily. How do you all find the time!

You have to find the time. Maybe not daily. But, you have to find the time - no excuses, no slacking off. (of course you will from time to time, but starting a plan you have to STICK. TO. IT)

I always say “do you have time to watch tv at night?” Then you have time to exercise.

Don’t think “find time”. Think “make time”.

  • 15 minutes of stretching/weights in the morning + 15 minutes of cardio (a walk, bike ride, etc.) at night.
  • Use the weekend. If you can pair two weekend workouts with 1-2 during the week you can still have break days.
  • Lunch hour at work? Morning or afternoon break? Anyplace you can walk during those times? Keep some sneakers at work.
  • Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime - all offer some fitness videos/workouts.

You can decide to “make time” with that 6-6 schedule (5 days a week?) or you can let the job rule your day/life/health.

Sort of tough love! But without a commitment, you’ll be what one of our posters “affectionately” calls “Januaries” - people who jump on - and off - the fitness/health wagon all within the month of January or so.

(also why does your gym depress you? Is it the physical environment or something else?)

Yeah- it has to become part of your life. Block out time during your work day. Do whatever it takes. I have a demanding job and I try to run before work, sometimes again after work, and occasionally if those don’t happen I go down to the gym at work.

@FallGirl and @abasket – I bought those Athleta BeFree shorts last summer. I think one of those reviews might be mine

Anyway, I now have three pairs. They stay put when I run, are long enough to cover all possible chafing areas, don’t ride up or down, fit a phone in the side pocket (and dog poop bags and ginger chews and a hat and gloves–I also have the long version), and have worn well. Absolutely worth it for me.

“i really hate the gym. it depresses me so I’m extremely concerned about staying on this fitness plan when I’m at work from 6-6 daily. How do you all find the time!”

If there is a will, there is a way. FWIW, I managed to train for several races working like that. Sometimes, it meant running 5-8 miles at 8-9 pm. My secret - no gyms. Getting to and from a gym would have taken an extra hour… so no to that. We bought - piece by piece - some things to equip our home “gym”: a treadmill, a recumbent bike, some weights, Bosu ball, TRX, other minor stuff… Since you are not a runner, equipping a home gym will be easier - no expensive machinery is needed.

SalveMater, start with just a few times a week, maybe combine the gym with something you like to do, like watch some TV while you work out (if on a treadmill). Or grab some take out food on the way home that makes it special, like some sort of salad you wouldn’t make yourself at home.

I prefer mornings so I can get it done before anything else gets in the way. I can see going after work and letting the gym/work out be the way you shake off the work day. When my schedule was tighter I did have to give up some activities to exercise, mostly shopping and watching TV. And it soon came to be that my friends were all runners and swimmers, the people I saw day after day at the gym or on the trail!

Swim for me today. I felt weak and slow. Might get to spin later. I have to be careful not to overdo it here as I get back into it, though.

Here’s a fun little game for everyone trying to reduce added sugars:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/30/opinion/sunday/how-much-sugar-can-you-avoid-today.html

@SalveMater - it is tough to fit exercise in, especially before it becomes a firmly established habit. I get up most days at 4 so I can exercise before work. I’ve maintained a 100 pound weight loss because I’ve maintained a consistent exercise routine. It’s worth it and you can do it if you want to. Start small - see if you can fit in three workouts a week for several weeks in a row. Even 30 minutes of walking will make a difference.

Such good advice y’all!

It’s tough for me (mentally) to buy anything full price. Wonder if Athleta will have a 20% off regularly priced items MLK weekend…
