BTW, congrats on the promotion! Screw retirement if work is fun.
Congratulations, @MomofWildChild! A promotion is always good. All I can say about getting a ticket for being outside the yellow line is EXSCUUUUUSE ME!!!
H and I walked to church again this morning. I guess there are some benefits from him getting a fancy, schmancy sports car that he doesn’t want to take out of the garage … I later walked to the grocery store. Today’s temperatures are more in keeping with February, but tomorrow will get up to 55. Gotta love New England.
Congrats on the promotion @MomofWildChild !
Does the promotion include a perk of a treadmill desk???! Well deserved I’m sure - be so proud!
No treadmill desk, but I have my adjustable standing desk. I’ve found lately with getting the FitBit steps in that I haven’t been inclined to stand up as much in my office. If I’ve been stuck in meetings, I do stand up when I get back. I would be entitled to a bigger office, but I like mine and don’t want to move. I’m getting a small conference table but it’s going to be a squeeze.
Thanks, all. It’s a really good feeling to be finishing up my career at such a great company and knowing that they value what I do. I was told that one real strength was how much everyone at all levels of the company likes me. I was thinking it was a good thing they didn’t check with the running group that just banned me!
I have a trip to Napa for a conference later this week and I’m trying to figure out the running from where I’m staying. There are supposedly trails through the vineyards there, but there are trails and then there are “trails”. This will have to be done mainly in the dark, too.
Congrats @MomofWildChild!
I was thinking of you guys when my husband took me birthday shopping today.
I got some new workout gear, mostly from Athleta. Unfortunately they no longer had the shorts @FallGirl recommended, but I got some shots, a dress, some leggins and 2 shirts. I hate paying full price for anything, but my H was happy to do it. I went into lulu lemon, and didn’t want anything they had.
I FINALLY made it to the gym today. First time since before vacation, because of fall at end.
I’m hoping to finally get back to working out more, like I’d planned to do at the start of the year.
^^What a fabulous generous gift @1214mom ! I’ll admit much of my Athleta shopping happens on their website in the sale section - things do move through there pretty quick - plenty to choose from!
MOfWC, I ran in Napa! I think I had to do 12 or 15 miles, I forgot, but I managed it. I ran on the shoulder of the quiet road that runs parallel to the main freeway (we were staying at the Napa Marriott) - it was fine, and the run was gorgeous, except for a nasty armstrong on his chichi bike who got upset at the slowpoke “hogging” the narrow shoulder at the minute when a car was passing us as he was trying to pass me.
Hmmm…hitting the treadmill in a few, but “trip to Napa” and “shopping at Athleta” both sound good to me!
Happy Birthday @1214mom.
Wow, MOWC - congrats! Very well deserved.
We are back to chilly temps this morning but got out there for 6. I think I may have found the perfect training partner. Reliable, understands the need for monitoring HR, has great stories - sure makes the time go faster!
Catching up on posts, I want to hear about @C3Baker’s half. I think @Classof2015 had a race this past weekend, too - we need our Monday race reports!
Bunsen, Florida’s bike laws are a morass of confusing regulations which I suspect are not fully understood by many bicyclists and drivers. My experience, when riding in Sanibel 2 feet to the left of the lane shoulder line, was that drivers routinely yelled at me to get off the road and ride on a multi-user path that ran parrallel. Was the shoulder you were running in marked as a bike lane? If so, the cyclist may have believed (mistakenly) that he was required to be in the lane and was legally prohibited from entering the lane to avoid you. The laws are that confusing. Or he may have just been a jerk!
Bunden- my last 2 trips to this conference were at the Silverado. Running from there was just OK. Some of the roads were good and some had too much traffic. It was pretty hilly. It was gorgeous, but I was almost completely in the dark and it was tricky. This year I’ll have to figure it out all over again.
Sabaray- I’m SO glad you found a good running partner. That is not always easy to do!
It was supposed to rain this morning and it’s chilly, so I went downstairs for 3 miles. Ugh.
@sabaray – thanks for remembering! Took 3 subways Saturday morning to the 4M race in Brooklyn. Ran slower than before but the fast moms in my age group who’ve been beating me in every race must have stayed in Manhattan, because I came in 3rd! First time I placed in my age group.
C3B – I need an update too – hope your half went well.
@BunsenBurner – sorry about the house woes. It is a very stressful time (but exciting) time.
MOWC – that’s some serious running you’re doing. I know you signed up for a marathon; can’t remember when it is but good luck with the training. Congrats on the promotion!
Been crazy busy at work lately. Sorry if I missed anyone’s posts. Happy Birthday to 1214Mom!
Happy Monday to all.
Congrats! I tell myself every time I finish upright and still breathing I’ve placed! I know I’d like to hear more about your training routine - I can’t recall if you are a lifelong runner, returning to the sport or new to it. This is a good place for me to pick up tips from folks who’ve had some racing success, so hope you’ll contribute some.
Good race, Classof2015! Congrats on the age group place!
My first marathon is Hatfield and McCoy on June 10. It’s a tough one and will be hot. Goal is to finish upright with a smile on my face (and, as sabaray said, still breathing). This is not a race to care about time. Next one for which I’m registered is Minneapolis in October. It’s my daughter’s goal marathon. Her goal half is next weekend.
Thanks, sabaray and MOWC! I think that’s a good way to look at it – upright and still breathing is a good thing!
2 marathons MOWC!!! Wow – that’s impressive. June 10 sounds hot already. Good luck to your DD next weekend.
Happy to share my journey. I ran track and XC in high school; my best time was 13:53 for a 2 mile XC race. Didn’t run in college (I ran on my own; not for the school). Didn’t run much in my 30s and 40s.
Then met my fiancé about 1.5 years ago. He is a serious runner, and he really got me back into it. Started running with him. First time I did 6 miles I thought I was going to die. And I told him I needed a few days off. He just laughed. He runs every day. So I went out the next day, and the next. Then just worked up doing more miles more days. Runkeeper helped. Hearing the little voice announce my pace was a huge motivator.
When I’m in a race, I now just try to focus on keeping up a pace where I feel ok – challenged but not dying – and maintain it (unless it’s a longer race where I’d kick at the end). And of course, that pace changes based on amount of sleep, running the week before, injuries, etc. I was 10 seconds slower per mile on this 4M vs the previous one. That was my pace for that day.
And of course, this thread has been a godsend. I have found endless inspiration and information here.
Saturday’s half marathon was certainly a different experience! I don’t do a lot of trail running but want to do more. It was cold and very windy with light snow at times. Once I realized very early on that my pace was going to be slow I settled in and did OK. There were a lot of fallen trees, rocks, tree roots, etc to navigate that made things challenging. There were a few sets of stairs on some of the really steep parts and those were covered in a glaze of ice. Everyone walked on those stairs. I was surprised, I had expected people to be trying to be faster on them than they were. Overall it wasn’t as muddy as I had feared, but there was a long stretch in mile 5 that was just thick deep mud and no way to go around it. I had a spectacular wipeout in the mud, but at least it was a soft landing! The hardest part was a one mile stretch that is basically a narrow causeway across a large lake. We ran directly into the 20 mph wind and that was so cold! Once you get across the lake, it is an immediate hill from the lake shore up to a ridge above. It was a tough hill! Anyway, I’m glad I did the race and it really wasn’t that bad because I decided to just not care about my time. Taking it easy allowed me to enjoy the scenery and not feel like I was killing myself. H seemed to have a harder time with the course and I finished 8 minutes ahead of him which is unbelievable - he is almost always faster than I am.
Congratulations on the promotion MOWC! Good luck with your training - a marathon in June sounds tough! Will you be in your new age bracket by then?
Bunsen - it’s good to hear from you. I hope things get settled with the idiot realtor and buyers soon. What a hassle!
Classof2015 - nice job with your race on Saturday and congrats on placing!
Oh my goodness C3B that sounds like torture! The things runners do!
Hey C3Baker – way to go! I didn’t realize your half was on a trail – that’s amazing. And also didn’t realize your hubby was a runner too – really make the workouts more fun. Thanks!
C3B- My friend Jen up there did that race, too. She said there were some slick spots, for sure.
Classof2015- Thanks for the recap. Your base- even from years ago- would be a big help getting back into it.
