Moon Pie 10 mile race. It was way too soon after my marathon last Saturday, but my husband wanted to ride his bike down there and my daughter was running. I thought “how bad could it be with walking breaks?” Well- pretty bad. It was really hot and hilly (which I knew). 1:48:33 which I’m not disappointed with considering everything, but it yielded only 4th in the age group! Last year I would have been 2nd. There was a lot of walking involved, but still a 10:49 overall pace. It was just really, really hard. Cool festival (Moon Pie and RC Cola) and lots of junk food and vendors. I didn’t sleep well and had to get up really early to drive an hour to get to Bell Buckle. My daughter had a 10 mile PR! She ran 1:30:52.
Moon Pie… Mmmm! No wonder you ran. Congrats to you both. That is super awesome.
Our house siders are “almost” done… Comcast is next. Soon.
I can read between the lines!
The disappointing thing is that this year they only had mini Moon Pies and you were supposed to only take one! I actually felt not that great from the heat and only did eat the one mini. In fact, I feel pretty puny still. Maybe worse than last week’s marathon! It’s cumulative- tiring business trip Thurs-Fri to DC and interacted with a lot of people- both my business associates AND a tour of the US Capitol which involved mingling with half the population of the US and Europe. Flights were packed. If I don’t get sick it will be a miracle.
You’ve been busy, MOWC!
I had a 10k yesterday…the day after the kids’ last day of school here! Had a nice 4:30 alarm going off.
I obviously haven’t been running like I should, and this was (at least for me) a pretty challenging course. We went over two bridges, but it was kind of like four. Once we crossed each bridge, we did a U-turn and then ran (walked) back to the other side. The bridges were actually my favorite part though, because the water was beautiful and the breeze was awesome. Luckily, it was overcast. This would have been AWFUL if the sun was out the whole time. Still hot and humid, though.
Now to get ready for my three 5Ks in July. I think I’m finally ready to go after some time goals!
.
Beautiful PERFECT summer morning! No humidity, cool breeze, sunshine. Pup walk this morning and got my H out for a 3 mile walk with me. Trying to make the most of these long summer days!
Nice morning here, too. 8.1 miles but they felt hard because I am not at all recovered from the races. Got it done, though, and wore my new Oiselle team singlet.
Balancing on a platform 12 feet up high… Burns a lot of calories.
90 degrees here today.
Inside or outside painting??? Be careful!!!
Thanks, abasket! Reporting - still alive! This is indoors. Dang mouldings around skylights.
I’ve been really bad and have just been wearing workout clothes on the weekends, so I was very surprised this past weekend when I went to put on actual shorts…and none of them fit.
Not happy about that, especially since I just bought several of them last summer.
Looking to mix up my runs and find a group class at the gym I like. I’ve tried a few, and I’ll try boot camp this Thursday. I have my exercise plan laid out for the week. I’ve been drinking more water. I also need to get back on myfitnesspal and track what I’m eating, as I’m sure that’s one of the major factors.
Ugh. Now I’m off to run!
Yes, probably most of us could/should go back to food tracking now and then. Easy to slowly move away from where we want to be food wise.
RunKeeper challenged me to complete a 45 minute run tonight - so I did! 4.3 miles in 45 minutes. That’s pretty good for me.
I did the same thing…bought several pairs of new shorts last summer and can’t fit in them this summer. It’s frustrating and discouraging. At our age it seems we have to be so diligent.
I do have a question. I’ve started getting serious about working out my leg muscles as I’m giggling way too much…I am aghast this summer as I feel I have old lady thighs finally. So, I started yesterday. One new exercise was to stand straight against a wall, and slide down to a seating position and hold it for 10 seconds and repeat twice after that. I also did squats. OMG, just that teeny move has made my legs incredibly sore today. I know to do this every other day, but should I tomorrow. It really hurts. Will I hurt myself by doing it again tomorrow? I did walk before I did those.
If something hurts too much - hurts, not just sore…I’d have to wonder if you aren’t doing it right - maybe too tense, or not actually working the intended muscles - putting too much pressure on your back…where does it hurt?
The wall activity sounds like it’s trying to mimic squats - maybe you did too much of one same things - wall squats and then regular squats. Squats can also be hard on the knees.
Walking is a good warm up for cardio stuff…but for strength training I THINK your warm up should include more stretching. Arm/neck circles, lunges, gentle skaters, etc. If your body isn’t used to repetitive exercises like lunges, squats, etc. you’ll need to ease into it. But probably better to not overdo it in one day, BUT keep a regular schedule of doing them 3-4 times a week. Gradually increase the repetitions.
That’s my two cents.
Thanks. It hurts to walk up the stairs even. What hurts are the front of my thighs. Do you think I should skip one more day? Maybe just do cardio tomorrow and stretch?
If you’re still having the same level of soreness tomorrow I would not repeat those same exercises yet - I’d do something different. That’s what I would do.
I took some ibuprofen before bed and it feels better, but not great. I’ll wait until tomorrow. Thanks!
Sounds like soreness from squats and the soreness comes from your quads or thighs. And soreness is just “weakness leaving the body.”
Squats are one of the main core, back and leg strengthening exercises and I’d continue to do them forever. Just make sure you’re doing them properly. Go to youtube and search on “air squat crossfit” and there’s a nice short video of a proper air squat.
conmama – have you ever used a foam roller? DH swears by it and I’ve started using it. Really helps iron out whatever body part is hurting you. Other favorite remedy for soreness is a bath with Epsom salts (get the lavender scented ones if you really want a relaxing experience). Saved me after the marathon when I could barely walk, I was so sore.
No, but I will buy some salts the next time I’m out. They feel a little better today. I’ve walked and stretched. I might put a heating pad on them for awhile. I really want to start this tomorrow again. I used to do lunges and squats for years, but haven’t done them in a few. You can really tell it in the jiggliness of my legs, I never had that before. I know part of the problem is my skin isn’t as taut in my inner thighs now, but I hope these exercises will help.
