^^^YES!!!
(I sort of feel bad about posting the article because it has generated a lot of discussion ranging from poo-poo’ing it to taking it very seriously)
Use your common sense. Listen to your body. Your trainer is your guide not your owner.
Spin class is totally a fun class and great exercise !
@abasket, don’t feel bad about posting the article. It made for * great * discussion and even though I did sort of dismiss it, there is value to knowing that it’s important to listen to your body, and that it’s possible to go too far, regardless of what a trainer is telling you. I tend to take that a bit too much for granted and assume everyone thinks the way I do–for example at least half the times the spin coach instructs us to stand and run, I stay in the saddle. When people load up weights in my body pump class for shoulder work, I use the lightest possible weights. I know what causes me injury and I’m not about to risk it.
I would never load up the weight and do an exercise quickly. That’s a recipe for injury, but building muscle by adding weight to your exercise regimen is not a problem. Just have to know your limitations and when to stop. Just have to be prudent depending on your skill and experience. OTOH, performing an exercise quickly with lighter weight is also beneficial IMO.
For example, last night I failed at a lift, taking my time of course, making sure my mechanics were proper. Then tried once more and was successful. And then I moved on to something else. Just have to be smart.
Well, wish me luck. Looks like we’re going to climb Mt Adams pretty soon. If I don’t do it with him, my husband will do it alone, which I don’t want. Most people do it on two days, but we’ll do it in a day, though it’s over 12K feet and over 6700 feet of elevation gain.
I’m going to go back on this thread and find the energy boosts you guys recommended earlier when we were going to do the Pikes Peak Ascent. It is my biggest problem, running out of energy for heavy exertion, my appetite is suppressed and I can’t keep up with the energy expenditure.
Best of luck to you and your hubby, bus!! I know what you mean by needing to be there. When I floated the idea of hiking the Kalalau trail, Mr. rejected it. I said that I would do it alone… Mr. said over his dead body. I am an adult, so when he saw me buying a permit etc. he decided he needed to go just so I would be safe. We hiked it together and had a blast. Stay safe!
Got our home gym almost set up! The biggest deal was to get the treadmill downstairs, but Mr. B and our triathlete friend managed just fine. So excited to have a dedicated room for the exercise stuff.
An exercise room sounds great! I would love it. It’s currently 91 degrees here and our second major thunderstorm of the week is sweeping through. If it would cool things off that would be great - as it is, it will simply amplify the humidity! I’ve been trying to vary my routine a bit because it’s just too miserable to run a lot. TRX, yoga, barre. I’m starting a new weight loss program on Monday - really hoping to focus on cutting down on some unwanted fat and building some muscle and I need some professional guidance to do that.
I have an ulterior motive - vanity. D is getting married next year and the kind of dress I’d like to wear won’t look good unless I get some Michelle Obama arms!
I ran a 5K last night. It was 91 degrees, heat index was 101. They red-flagged the race so no official timing. I did pretty well the first two miles but wasn’t feeling that great in the third mile. For some reason it made me worried that I wasn’t feeling well (they talked endlessly in the pre-race announcements about the heat/humidity and conditions) so I took a few short walking breaks during the last mile. I still ended up with a pretty good net pace.
This morning’s Back on My Feet run was aborted after a half mile. One of those isolated thunderstorms appeared out of nowhere and thunder and lightning came crashing down as the skies opened up and buckets of rain dumped on us. That was a really fast half mile back to the starting point!
Sabaray - enjoy the wedding planning! It’s fun to have a wedding to look forward to as motivation. I am picking my MOB dress up tonight after work (alterations were needed). It would look better if I had Michelle Obama arms, but with the wedding in 9 days, it’s too late for me!
BB - enjoy your exercise room! I think it would be great to have a room dedicated for exercise.
