Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

The photos were initially very difficult. When I first started I told myself I only needed to lose a few pounds. I just wanted to be thin. Now when I look at all the photos sequentially it’s very motivating to keep going. If one is more focused on being fit rather than pounds lost it’s a great tool. Try it for a few months to document your return to weight routines!

I know we’ve discussed Gary Taubes and his war on sugar in the past. An interesting article on how things are going for him now : https://www.wired.com/story/how-a-dollar40-million-nutrition-science-crusade-fell-apart/

Yesterday’s lifting was good. Reps 6-7-8 were work.

I’m looking forward to a long hike on Sunday. The hiking club will go, year round, no matter the weather, and members are not required to RSVP. It’s perfect, for me.

I managed to keep my running streak intact during our vacation to Lebanon and South Africa. It was challenging and sometimes involved running very late at night or in a small indoor space, but I did it! I gained a few pounds but should be able to lose them quickly.

I don’t think our friends/acquaintances overseas understood why I was doing it, but that’s OK! I feel good about myself instead of having that horrible post-vacation feeling I’ve had in the past.

Today is a rest day for me as tomorrow is a running day. It’s supposed to be very warm so I don’t think I’ll be setting any distance or speed records, but strangely I am okay with that. For the first time in a long time I’m not thinking about a race. I’m just running because I enjoy it.

I think weight fluctuations during vacation are to be expected and hopefully it means you had a really enjoyable time with lots of local food. Glad you could keep your streak going as I know that was important to you.

Wow, a vacation to Lebanon and South Africa? I’m not much of an international traveler, but if possible, I try to pick a hotel with a decent gym. Absent that, there are body weight movements one can do too.

Yesterday was a scheduled workout day for me, but for some unknown reason I caught the flu. I think. I skipped yesterday, but I’m hopeful I can get a workout in today. Feeling a little better today, but then that could be the Advil talking. I feel really guilty missing workouts.

@MaineLonghorn

That is impressive that you were able to maintain your running streak while traveling overseas! Go you!

@sabaray

Be careful in that heat! My dog was not into walking this morning, and it wasn’t even near the highs yet.

Summer flu is no fun, @sushiritto; hope you’re feeling better today. I often find when I’m under the weather that some moderate activity improves my feeling of well-being but sometimes your body just needs the rest.

Thanks, Midwest - I run fairly early (think 5 am) before the heat has had a chance to build up. I have a healthy respect for heat after two pretty awful race experiences. I also have two big dogs who love their walks. We’re usually out pretty early in the day but I’m pretty cautious with them - hot pavement on paw pads can be very dangerous as I’m sure you know!

@sushiritto

There is a bug going around. One of my coworkers was out this week, unable to get away from the bathroom. Ugh. Poor thing.

Feel better! Rest, then kill it next workout.

I’m typically with @sabaray and still workout and get a sweat going, hopefully help bringing a quicker end to being sick. However, yesterday, I didn’t think I’d have a chance to do much, if anything. Two days off in a row feels really weird.

I can’t remember getting a summer flu. Who’s sick in the summer? And it came on so quickly. During the winter, I got the flu bad and was out a 3-4 days. Thanks for the wishes. I’m planning to get to the gym today, but today’s (actually making up Thursday’s) program includes a couple exercises, which even on the best of the days, is difficult. :-S

Deadlifts (rack pulls from the floor) today. Those aren’t too bad, when your under the weather. It’s like picking up your kid’s laundry from the floor. :))

@sushiritto
it is not fun to be sick at anytime, but summer time is somehow esp bad. Feel better soon. I am sure you know this, lots of liquid, eat some ginger (I think ginger can cure anything, lol), yogurt (probiotics are always good to have), and don’t feel bad of missing the workout, sleep in some as sleep will definitely improve your immune system too.

@MaineLonghorn
I bet you had some fantastic meals during your travel. I have only been to a Lebanese restaurant and their food was DELICIOUS!

@sabaray
I have read “the case against sugar” and I have been avoiding simple sugar and HFCS for a while. I have also lost faith in “nutritional science”, since it is so difficult to do long-term randomized trial on humans about the food they should/shouldn’t eat. I guess I have to resort to part of Michael Pollan’s motto of “eat food, not too much”.

Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, has been fighting a battle against Big Soda for years.

@Classof2015 I take quite a few yoga classes and the rate really varies depending on the studio. I almost always go to a dedicated studio. I’ve found that the yoga classes that are offered in a multi-purpose gym don’t work for me–rooms often aren’t heated, there are limited props (blankets, blocks, straps), etc. I usually buy a pass (which reduces the prices) but the going rate for drop-in in my area (Central Massachusetts) is $20-22. The studio I go to in the summer (which is in a resort area of MA) has a $28 drop-in rate (which is up from past years).

@makemesmart Ginger, ugh. Not a big fan. :-& I’m always drinking water though. Thanks.

I was able to get in a moderate workout tonight. I reduced the volume (reps) and weight and was able to do 60-70 minutes. Felt a little nauseous and shut it down. Hoping tomorrow is “more better.”

If the oppressive heat is in your area (it’s here in Ohio! Heat index of 110 expected today!!) Please be careful.

It was 70 and humidity was around 90%, so a quick 10k was it for me today. Good to be with the crew. I carry a handheld which was empty when I finished and my weight had dropped 2 pounds from prerun. Lots of fluids, folks!

Some of our older hikers (late 70s to 80) were not handling the heat well yesterday. Even though we were in the shade of the forest most of the time, it was very hot & humid.

The hike leader had a bail out point at six miles, but even that was too far for some.

We were supposed to do 12, but the hike leader cut it to 10 miles due to the heat. I think that was wise.

This week, I’m going to see if I can manage a deadlift with proper form and light weight. Watching videos on YouTube with tips is very helpful. How did we manage in the Stone Age?

^^^When I started with weights, I bought a package of 6 sessions with a trainer. It was worth the money, because I learned proper form from someone who was watching what I did and made corrections. Unfortunately, YouTube doesn’t do that. I enjoy weight training and learned that I am pretty strong for a 60-something woman. Good luck with your training.

I finally joined a women’s fitness group last month. I cannot seem to get this weight off and it’s totally accumulated around my midsection. I lift weight twice per week, and condition twice per week with maces, kettlebells etc. it’s slow going. I’ve lost no weight but I have lost 4 percentage points in body fat. Im tracking all my food as well.

@partyof5 A 4% reduction in body fat is tremendous. Congrats!

@Midwest67 Let me suggest you google the CrossFit video on deadlifting. It’s one minute long, but without all the rubbish normally associated exercise videos. And the video lists the important points necessary for success.

I’m still under the weather today, so I’ve been sick since Thursday. I’ve caught up on my workouts and now back on schedule. My workouts have been very good, strong, so I’m doing fine. Just wish I could get rid of it already.
