I always run alone, unless I’m running in a race of course. Matching pace is difficult. Although our local running store does do weekly organized runs and I may join one just to check it out. Actually, I just checked and there is one tonight (Thursdays) at 6:30. Hmm.
My programming has Thursdays (and Sundays) as “active recovery” days. So, I may just go into my home gym and do core work and the assault bike. Or maybe join the run. So many options. :))
@Midwest67 Avoid the pie. Have a rice cake or a piece of fruit instead.
I heard something on a podcast the other day about people often falling into a category of being either a “moderator” or an “abstainer”.
I’m a moderator. I can negotiate with myself to have a very small piece of fruit pie - and I can be satisfied and done after that. I see it as a strength to be able to satisfactorily moderate myself - to have control and negotiate limits for/with myself.
Other people are “abstainers”. They either have no pie or ALL the pie. They can’t meet in the middle. Must avoid all temptations fully. No matter if the vice is food or otherwise.
If @Midwest67 is a “moderator” I think it’s fine to have a bit of pie! She clearly is very dedicated a majority of the time to a healthy lifestyle. Denying yourself simple pleasures moderately can be - for some people - the straw that breaks the camels back on a strategy.
Think about you you are - moderator or abstainer.
Side note: I’ve gone to our local running store running group. Coincidentally, also Thursday nights at 6:30! Though it is a “group run” that doesn’t mean everyone runs together. Still many paces, people running together or apart, all ages and stages - even strollers and sometimes dogs! It’s fun and they often have simple refreshements and product demos and giveaways.
@notrichenough There is NO way I’m clicking on that link.
@abasket Was it a Gretchyn Rubin podcast? Whether I’m a moderator or abstainer, oddly enough, depends on the food. I will often feel better with zero cookies than one cookie. Better with zero tortilla chips than just a little.
But pie? I can definitely be content with one delicious piece of Michigan cherry pie. Yum!
There must be a 3rd group. I don’t fit either category. I don’t avoid temptations. I simply just don’t want them. :)>- In all honestly, moderation is weakness (in my mind). And my simple pleasure is a perfectly executed snatch (the most beautful and technical of all lifts) or finishing a race.
You can synthesize food into a pill and I’d be fine with it. Whether you enjoy it or not, one piece or the whole pie, pie is a processed sugar-filled food. No bueno. Avoid the pie. Sorry, just my two centavos.
I’ll amend my previous statement. The other simple pleasure in life, in the category of food and beverage, my morning 20 oz cup of freshly roasted 100% Guatemalan or Kona coffee. :))
While my tastes for foods have changed, I’m not going to say I don’t want donuts or pie because I do. The difference is that my rational mind now reminds me how terrible I feel after too much sugar or artificial sweetener (because I am NOT a moderator) so I can be an abstainer for the most part. Work in progress. I enjoy food too much to get it from a pill.
As part of Prime day, I bought an iced tea pot - silly purchase that I never would have paid full price for, but the ritual of preparation will give me the illusion that I’m having a treat. I also bought a Nespresso. Not the one I wanted originally, but better than the Keurig I currently have for a quick cup of coffee.
The group of women I run with is fairly large and there are at least three different pace groups. I find it easier to push through in a group - added benefit is often having a race buddy.
I would bet a lot of pennies that the majority of the population - not all, but majority - likes food. All levels of nutrient wise. And would not prefer it in a pill. Do you want your coffee in a pill? If not, open your mind just enough to see the other point of view - even if you don’t agree with it!
Michigan cherries. Thumbs up. Maybe a handful of cherries will be a second prize treat @Midwest67 !
Oh, definitely. It’s a free country, people can eat whatever they want. I honestly don’t care. I just think a person’s podcast that boils 7 Billion people into two groups is complete nonsense.
As for coffee, it’s mainly water and, as far as I know, humans still need fluids running through our body to function properly. However, if the doctor told me to not drink coffee anymore and I had to give it up, then I’d remove it from my diet. But maybe if I could just smell the beans. :)) Also, coffee does have health benefits.
I’ve been in gyms all my life. And I hear folks complaining all the time about one ailment or another and struggling with their weight. Sugar is killing people. If it were me, then I’d avoid it. Others are willing to roll the dice on their health. As I said, moderation is mental gymnastics and weakness. I realize my view is unique and I hope you’re willing to have an open mind.
I have an open mind. Remember, I’m a “moderator”. Not all or nothing.
Final word and I’ll be on my way: Any podcast, news article, journal article, conversation - any verbal or written text - is not meant for everyone nor applies to anyone. I’m grateful for all I have learned -health wise, exercise wise, lifewise - in any informative resource like a podcast - including the ability to “moderate” and take what applies to me in terms of information and leave the rest of the info for those who may benefit from it.
You can do it Midwest! Figure out just a bit of time in your schedule- you’ll be glad you did!
I run alone during the week. Too difficult to find people with the same schedule, pace and geographic location. So I really enjoy my group runs on Saturday mornings. The club also has group runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and I’m trying to make that work for me. I don’t do the Sunday group runs- I need one day where I have the option to s
@abasket In a half-serious, half-joking tone, sometimes I think we’re all stuck in a version of The Matrix. And as Morpheus said (probably paraphrasing), “The Matrix is a system. And the system is our enemy.”
And, “There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.”
@sabaray Do you maintain conversations when you run with your group? I haven’t run and had a conversation in memory. I’m usually a Point A to Point B person.
@FallGirl I haven’t run in one of these friendly group runs, but I may try it tonight, just to check it out.
@Midwest67 Nope, no alcohol. :-?? I’m weird. I know. ;))
There’s no real health benefit to your body that you can’t get from other foods. Empty calories and carbs. But it’s totally cool, if others partake. I go to tailgate parties at football games, but I don’t drink alcohol.
Yep! That’s why it’s a social run! Most of us run for fun. If it’s a “serious” workout then not so much. Speedwork = no chatting.
Last summer I attended a few organized group runs that originated at a local brewery and I’ve done some barre classes there as well - start with exercise, end with beer. The combination of a way too warm run and beer just didn’t sit well with me. My alcohol consumption has gone way down in the past year - which is a good thing. I do like kombucha as an alternative- I know there are folks who have that on their list of “no” foods, but it’s an occasional indulgence.
Ok the rest of my post disappeared…
One of the women I ran with this morning mentioned her lack of coordination, something I have heard many times from runners. That may be why I feel I have found “my people “ among the running group.
Attended a free 30 minutes boot camp and did a 5 mile afterwards. It starts raining, so I headed back, afraid more for my phone than myself. After the boot camp, I talked to the trainer, and they are running a special of $77 a month. I want D17 and DS20 to join. Half hour sessions, probably 8 to 10 times a day. I workout near my work during lunch weekdays.
DH is driving to Vandy to get D back. He booked hotel near a lake trail so hopefully they can get some running before their drive back.
How much is boot camp in your area? They quoted me $187 a month or $1600 a year, so I guess the $77 is a new special.
