I’m a big fan of roasted vegetables but I’ve never had kohlrabi. You’ll have to give us a report, Lizardly.
I try to follow Michael Pollan’s food rules - whole foods, not too much, mostly plants. I have tried low carb unsuccessfully. I struggle with getting enough protein but PN has helped with that.
@Midwest67 There’s these quotes on the walls in several places at my gym and the one over the toilet is “Be stronger than your excuses.”
I typically take a night off from CF either Wednesday or Thursday. This week it’s tonight. I’m having dinner with my siblings. But, if I don’t come home too late, then I may try to squeeze a workout in at home. Or “hit” the nearby school track.
I have been slacking ever since we came back from a weeklong college tour. We did really well during the tour, even did some hiking at Griffith’s park and walked whenever possible. But since DS’ swim team is taking August off, I am having difficulty getting up early in the morning to exercise! Didn’t feel that I am “stronger than my excuse” at the moment.
I’m having a difficult time with animal protein at the moment. I worry about fat and cholesterol content in other alternative sources. I like nuts, seeds, nut butters, Greek yogurt, an occasional egg. Fish once or twice a week. If it has a face and four legs, I just can’t do it right now. I feel better with protein at every meal - I think my blood sugar stays steadier - but it’s just tough. I’m not a huge fan of protein bars or powders.
Giving my foot some rest - time on the elliptical and an upper body workout, including pushups. Went okay.
@Midwest67 - as a matter of fact, I am ! Today in fact.
I did run our neighborhood track today for 2.6 at a relaxed pace. Walked the dogs to cool down. I’m thinking a lot of walking in non-supportive footwear last week didn’t do my foot any favors. The current plan is to do some lower body after work. If I say it here now I have to do it!
I’m a huge fan of eggs. I love them. But I’m working pretty closely with my physician on a few health issues so I’m going to stick with his recommendations.
Now I remember. Some time back, where you were asking about protein alternatives. I think I responded with hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. I’m sure you’ve thought about this already, but have you consulted with a professional dietitian/nutritionist? I’ve not done it, so maybe they’re a bunch of quacks, I don’t really know.
Last night’s HIIT kicked my behind. Thirty minutes of 5 stations, two minutes each station: rowing, wall balls, running (400m), sabaray’s favorite, rope climbs, and finally a combo of jump rope and weighted reverse lunges. Took me a while to recover my breathing on that one.
And I had a new (recent) one rep max deadlift in my strength session. I thought about going higher, but I conveniently used “running out of time” as an excuse. I have to be stronger than my excuses.
No fracture, just tendinitis. No weights last night, just adjusted my schedule a bit. Lower body this morning, some time with the elliptical.
The physician I see practices integrative medicine so we spend a lot of time discussing nutrition and complementary therapies. Good reminder on the hemp hearts and chia seeds.
Relatively short session today, about 60 minutes. Warmed up with high(er) reps, lower weight shoulder presses and back squats. No max’ing out tonight, which was good. My body was still in recovery mode from Thursday’s doozy, which I assume is by design with my program. The HIIT took me 10 minutes and was a “couplet” of front squats and pull-ups.
For starters, cut back on running, particularly hill work. Do more cross-training, which I’ve been doing (my friend the elliptical). Exercises to strengthen the calf - things like standing on the edge of a step and lowering my heels and raising, Pilates calf raises, walking the dog in yoga. I rely on my quads too much when running, so I’ve been working on glute strength - making sure power is coming from my glutes and hamstrings. I just need to be patient, never my strongest suit. It’s an overuse injury and I just need to acknowledge I’m not quite there yet. I also have an arthritic big toe on the same foot and it just makes for a perfect storm of foot pain. It was also suggested that I add a heel cup to my shoe.
I had bad metatarsal pain a couple years ago. I’m not sure, but I think it was due to wearing flip-flops almost all the time – but may have also been aggravated by wearing barefoot shoes on a hard surface. Not sure.
When the pain went away, I forgot all about it. Best kind of amnesia.
“write” ABCs with your feet/toes in the air while sitting on a chair. Do it daily or more.I’ve done it for 7 years now since I got back into running and never had shin splints. Also do circles with your feet 10x in each direction. I’ll do it in church, restaurants, etc. until my wife makes me quit!
I saw it but wonder how many (if any!) would follow this new “finding” and become a teetotaler! :)) @sushiritto
I love drinking Kumbucha and it has alcohol in it too!
