Yes, there are two spots where you have to cross traffic. One is on Knox street. I have fewer problems here because the traffic is pretty heavy here, so when one car stops to check for runners or bikers, it stops everyone, so they are more in tune with looking before they drive through the crosswalk. The other one is on Harvard street, which doesn’t have as much traffic. So if car is driving on that road by itself, there is not another car ahead of it slowing down to check for cross traffic. That was the case yesterday. There was no car in front of the woman, and she just put pedal to the metal in spite of the fact that I was already in the cross walk as she approached. But as I mentioned already, there are flashing lights on both ends of the crosswalk, as well as bright yellow signs. There is a speed hump that is marked as well, so it is most definitely a well marked crosswalk. But if you are distracted and in a hurry, and you just don’t bother to even turn your head in the slightest, you could certainly plow into someone at approximately 20-35 miles per hour, depending.

I really think they need to put stop signs on that particular intersection.It’s not such a well traveled street that doing so would cause bad congestion, even during rush hour.

@sabaray Bummer about your “down” week in terms of diet and exercise. But I often cite this quote to both myself and family, “Attack each day with an enthusiam unknown to mankind.” Every day is a new day.

@Nrdsb4 Sorry to hear about your fall. What’s interesting in my area is that bicyclists are the aggressors and drivers have become the “vanquished.” There are so many driving rules and green bike lanes around here that some bicyclists have become PITA’s.

I’m glad you were not seriously injured @Nrdsb4

Speaking of bike trails crossing busy roads…last year I was driving and beginning to slow down with a red light ahead.

I heard the terrible sound of something hitting my car! I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a cyclist on a road bike curled up on the ground.

I was sooooo confused. How did I hit him and not notice?!?!? I leapt out of the car to check on him, and thankfully, he was not seriously injured.

It took my brain some seconds to realize he rode ride into the side rear panel of my car! He hit me, I didn’t hit him. Very large side dent!

It really shook me up.

Glad you weren’t injured Nrdsb. That must have been scary.

I’m just too chicken to ride on city streets. Dallas isn’t particularly bike friendly first of all, and it seems that not all drivers and bikers are educated as to the actual laws and rules, so it just is too risky for my blood. The trails I ride are mostly dedicated bike trails with little interaction with cars, but even so, there is SOME exposure as trails intersect occasionally with streets and you must use a crosswalk. It only takes getting hit by a car once to maim or kill you, so I really try to limit my exposure. Even so, I had a close call yesterday and am feeling the pain of it today.

Bicycle paths and trails can sometimes be very dangerous at intersections with roads, due to drivers not expecting bicyclists crossing, and/or the intersections being designed poorly in that intersecting traffic has difficulty seeing each other.

True, and as my experience shows, they can be dangerous even though drivers are directed through various means to be looking for them.

“True, and as my experience shows, they can be dangerous even though drivers are directed through various means to be looking for them”

We have had several experts testify that signs about cyclists are often placed in a way that no reasonable driver would notice them. The testimony was that Drivers need a stop sign or otherwise a signal IN THE ROAD with a notice that there are bikes crossing to be aware of cyclists when there is no real intersection. Drivers are taught to look for things at intersections or when stopped by normal traffic devices only . After hearing from several of these experts our town put in flashing yellow in road lights that are triggered by a cyclist.These have been highly successful.

^^^The flashing lights at the intersection i have described are continuously flashing. Maybe flashing as a pedestrian/jogger/cyclist approaches the intersection would be more effective, in addition to actual stop signs.

Much to my surprise, my run felt strong today. Time limited to 4 miles and change. But I felt there was plenty left in the tank, even after my leg-heavy Saturday workout.

Busy weekend so no “real” exercise to speak of. Today was the dreaded weigh, measure and photo day. I am down
8.4 lbs and 6.9 inches since July 28th though, so I feel pretty good about that. New phase of workouts start tomorrow.

Fabulous results from lots of hard work, @sabaray!

@sabaray what’s the new phase of workouts? Inquiring minds want to know or did I forget already. :smiley:

Are you still working with the trainer who was emphasizing weightlifting? Still making your friends jealous at the gym?

I was up for hours last night with either a virus or food poisoning. Yuck.

As I laid with my head on the cold tile floor of the bathroom, I thought, how does one manage when you’re sick & really old?!?

Missed the hike today, of course. I am moving, but slowly. Took a short nap in the sun on a gorgeous fall day.

Sunday to-do list? Just couldn’t do a thing today!

I hope I’m well enough to lift on Tuesday.

@sabaray Shout out for your hard work! That’s a lot of weight & inches.

@Midwest67
Hope you are feeling better today. Lots of fluids and rest!

@sabaray
6.9inches in 2months! That’s marvelous! You should write a book now.

Logged in 13 miles last week! Feeling sore but the blisters are gone (not bothering me anymore!). Did 6.5 miles yesterday, first time ran a 10-k on my own. At the TRX class today, a fellow TRXer asked “did you lose weight?” I didn’t but it made my day :))

@makemesmart

Thanks! Much better today. Slept for HOURS yesterday.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and support. @makemesmart, glad the blister issue has resolved. I have no doubt you’ll be able to do that half! @Midwest67, glad to see you are doing so much better. After the weekend I could not drag out of bed this morning, so am planning on the gym this afternoon, which is a big change for me.

Phase 3 workouts start today. 4 days of workouts split into lower body/upper body. Today it looks like a warmup (aerobic movement, fetal position breathing, bear crawl, staggered stance deep squat breathing, squat to stand, bodyweight get up), 8 rounds of goblet squats, 3 rounds of walking dumbbell lunge followed by farmer’s carry; 3 rounds of salute plank and side plank - only 20 seconds for each side on both moves. I’ll probably squeeze in a little running too, in spite of my coach’s admonitions to take it easier.

I have not been able to schedule a followup with the weights trainer simply due to the fact it would be too much right now. Between running, Pilates and the PN workouts I just don’t know if another day of exercise is a good idea right now. I’d have to drop running completely and I really don’t want to do that.

@makemesmart

How did you resolve the blistering?

Just spent $267 at the Fleet Feet store. Out with the form roller, in with Addaday Pro Roller! I think I overcompensate the heel problem and now the other side of right foot is also hurting. It is very manageable hurt though. I only feel it during the 1st half mile. That is why I went…and at least they confirm that the type of shoes i use is good. I just need to have running shoes just for running, instead of everything. Also got insert! I feel that we all need to support Fleet Feet so that they can support our running lifestyle!

5.5 weeks to go before my 10 miler. Ran today with 9.34 minute mile for 10.3 miles. I purposely ran more than 10 miles to account for the zigzagging during race time. :wink:

Also finally fit into a very nice dress I bought a month ago. I just lost about 2 pounds, but I think I am leaner and fitter! Going to Vandy to see D this weekend and want to do some good runs around the campus.

Keep on being healthy, eveyone!

@Midwest67
I think the blisters decided to turn to callus :))

@SincererLove
Wow, you are fast! :slight_smile:
