Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

For a while, I did kickboxing on Tuesday. P90X on Wednesday, Insanity on Thursday and Body Bump on Friday. I like classes, or other people telling me what to do. I love Zumba, but don’t think I burned as much calories as it should as I can’t seem to shake my booty seamlessly :wink:

Now I do three, four runs a week, Body Combat and hiking here or there.

Anybody here ever run on treadmills? DH is a treadmill hater, but I use it one and a while. For example, it was late when I got home on Friday and I needed to get my 8 miles in. Those long runs are hard to do at work, plus I had a lunch with a girlfriend. If I ran outside, I would have finished around 8 20 pm when it is completely dark.

Happy being healthy and fit, everyone! Deposit in your health/weath bank every day!

Many of us run on treadmills, but I greatly prefer going outside. I got my own treadmill about 4 years ago for icy days and dark evenings. My night vision isn’t good- even with a headlamp, and I feel more secure on my treadmill. I mainly do shorter runs on it. I have a high end treadmill and a good set up with a big TV. I used to use the treadmills at the gym on bad weather days, and that is still an option, buy my own is easier- just roll out of bed and down to the basement! I think it is important to have a good quality treadmill with a long and fairly wide deck. I never used a treadmill when I used in Dallas- but there weren’t very many days that I couldn’t get outside. Here in TN there are.

I ran on treadmill occasionally too, since I started to increase my run-Mileage (lol), I just realized that the longest I could run on the gym treadmill is 60’ plus five minutes of cool down. I prefer track the most as the softer surface seems to be most agreeable with my joints, treadmill second, my up/down hill neighborhood third. Last night when I was running in the neighborhood, a raccoon got me jump in the air for a moment. No snakes yet. :))

@sabaray
Thank you for the post. This paragraph resonates with me the most “If there is one characteristic common to friends who are aging with a graceful acceptance of life’s assaults, it is contentment. Some with life-altering disabilities — my blind friend, another with two prosthetic legs — are more serene and complain less than those with minor ailments. They accept the uncertainties of old age without surrendering to them. A few have told me that the wisdom they’ve acquired over the years has made aging easier to navigate than the chaos of adolescence.” There is a Chinese saying that roughly translates to “contentment is fortune”, I guess it summarizes the gist of the article too. I have to remind myself of this constantly though.

Treadmill is a last resort most of the time and when the weather is really bad or icy I guess I’m glad it’s an option. But I never like it!! I’d rather be outside - even if it’s cold (or hot!)

I can’t do any machine (besides spin class) for more than 30 minutes without going batty.

I know most people hate them, but I’m such a wimp when it comes to running in cold, rain or snow. The only downside is it’s hard to do speed/interval work as my health club limits treadmill speed, so it’s hard to do fast 100/200/400/600 speed work.

Limits treadmill speed!?! Oh no!

I never heard of that. Time yes, but not speed.

I’ll run on the TM when I have to. Sometimes it is the best option.

I vastly prefer running outside to the treadmill. I think of the TM as something I can do when it’s lousy outside to keep me in shape so I can run outside when it’s nice.

I run on the treadmill when I have to - if it’s snowy, icy or really heavy rain. My gym has some really nice Woodways that no one ever seems to use except me. I vastly prefer outdoor runs with my group. 5.8 miles this morning in really humid conditions - cooler air should arrive Friday!

Limiting treadmill speed, I can see that. Over the years, I’ve seen alot of stupid people who rev up the treadmill to an extremely high speed and then jump on and off (legs go sideways, east-west, to the sides) the treadmill in order to simulate some sort of interval or Fartlek training. I haven’t seen anyone bite it over the years, but I bet many have.

I often prefer the treadmill, if I can’t get out to the trails, because you can avoid cars/trucks and their exhaust fumes. Weekends are better though.

My former CEO (who also coached me) broke a couple of treadmills at the gym because he was so fast. He wore them out! You could hear them start to “whirr” when he was on them.

In other news- be safe out there, folks. My daughter was hit by a car this morning while she was running. She was crossing (with other pedestrians) with the WALK sign at a busy intersection and a woman came around a bus and ran the red light. The driver wasn’t going very fast, fortunately. This happened right near the Vanderbilt medical center where my daughter was taken. They asked her “Which hospital would you like to go to?” Um, the one RIGHT THERE! We got the dreaded call, got to the ER and she was doing pretty well. Very shaken, bruised and scraped. Nothing broken. Got her Garmin stopped as she hit Mile 2 in the ambulance. Driver was ticketed. Not how we wanted to start our day.

So very scary @MomofWildChild. Relieved your D is ok.

@MomofWildChild
So sorry to hear about your daughter! No one wants to receive such phone call!
Will be thinking of her and sending good thoughts for speedy recovery. Hugs!

There’s a phone call I wouldn’t want to receive. I’m very sorry to hear about your daughter @MomofWildChild but sounds like she’s alright.

Yep running on the streets these days is a jungle, that’s why M-F evenings, I tend to use the treadmills, rowers and the assault (air) bikes more often than not.

I’m glad your daughter wasn’t seriously injured and hope she isn’t too sore tomorrow.

@MomofWildChild - sending hugs and healing thoughts to your daughter. How scary for your entire family.

Thanks everyone. She said she knew she was OK when she realized she was annoyed at the paramedics for saying “She was out jogging.” The dreaded “j” word.

@MomofWildChild , D is a CS premed sophomore at Vandy. When I visited the last weekend of September, I was running on West End Avenue, from 30th street to 23rd street where she lives in Vandy’s brand new dorm. Or ran to Centennial Park. I found a lot of drivers very aggressive, not waiting for pedestrians…more so than Pittsburgh! It was scary for me to cross the streets there. I am so glad that your D is ok, relieved that she got checked out!

Thanks. It is a crowded area- for sure. She’s pretty bruised and her ankles hurt. She said more bruises are coming out. She’s just so relieved it wasn’t worse.
