Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

It was the Austin Hilton and the fitness center is open to the public for memberships. I didn’t think it was great, but they did seem to have a CF room that had the Assault equipment and some other cardio stuff in it, besides a separate cardio room. Also a spa and the like.

I snuck away from my desk yesterday and met the Hiking Club at the Arboretum for 8 miles. It was a lovely sunny cool day. Well worth the drive.

In other news, I pulled my favorite winter jacket out of the dryer only to discover the metal zipper had fallen apart. I’m stunned and so sad. #FirstWorldProblems

I’m going to take it to the tailor and see if there is hope, at a reasonable price.

I can’t have nice things!

Sounds like a great hike with perfect weather. It always seem the best weather is when I’m at work!

Today was my Pilates day, continuing to work on and build on what I learned at my workshop series. That did wonders for my confidence and I’m more comfortable with moves that are what I would call scary.

I have some workout gear that has definitely seen better days but it’s stuff I love and continue to wear. I’d have a hard time with a winter coat that couldn’t be zipped, though! Hope you can get it repaired.

In uplifting news, I learned yesterday that one of our hikers is about to celebrate his 80th birthday! I would have never guessed! I thought 75, tops. He is not the fastest hiker, but he keeps up with the group and he still leads hikes every few months.

Ya, the washer/dryer always seems to destroy my nice clothes too.

And I hope I’m out there at 80 “kicking butt and taking names” too. [-O<

I’m still working with my new programming. I may jettison my old program all together, but I’m not sure I want to let it go after a few years of following it. But more importantly, I ordered some new shoes. I’m trying a new brand that I’ve heard are good HIIT type shoes. We’ll see. Unfortunately they were purchased direct, so they’re being shipped via carrier pigeon. 8-|

@sabaray Two days into the program–seems fine. Thought there would be more interaction with the coach. Lots to read online. I guess I’m old enough to sometimes want human interaction although the coach has sent text messages.
Will report back when I’ve learned more.

I failed at a +5 lb PR tonight with squat cleans again, but I decided to try it at +2.5 lb PR and was successful. >:D<

Good lift session on Saturday, even as my brain was trying so hard to wriggle out of it.

10 mile hike on Sunday. Beautiful wooded area with gentle hills. It started out just above freezing & warmed to sunshine & almost 50 by noon.

Boy, do I feel like a slacker! D was home this weekend and we had a very busy time traveling all over the state on various wedding related tasks. That meant a lot of meals out, which wasn’t good, and I have avoided the scale. Only cardio I got was when I was writing checks and I don’t think that’s the right kind of cardio! Saturday I walked the dogs a few times and Sunday - I walked the dogs and did housework. So, it’s Monday.

2.5 hilly miles this morning. I only ran once last week! I have training and 2 classes on my schedule this week and am going to try to be better about running. It seems the more I tell myself I should do something the less I want to do it.

@sabaray

With the wedding, it’s completely understandable your routine would be thrown off. Be kind to yourself!

^^^^Second the thought above–Be kind to yourself, @sabaray!

I had an intense 90-minute+ workout on Saturday afternoon with running, rowing, air bike, burpees, lunges, rope climbs, and lots of barbell work and I just didn’t get around to my typical Sunday run.

So @sabaray I also have feelings of being a slacker too. One the few weeks where I’ve taken two days off. At least you had a wonderful excuse. I was just lazy.

@Bromfield2 - I was going to mention that’s one of my issues with online coaching - the limited interaction with the coach… For nutrition, I think that can be fine. The workouts I get are basically videos with instructions and I am often guessing as to the amount of weight and if my form is okay. There are times I’d really like a real live person coaching me through a workout.

The studio I go to has been looking at some additional Pilates options, including one offered in partnership with Equinox. They have a ton of workouts available on their website for folks like me with a limited attention span. Some interesting options: https://furthermore.equinox.com/category/movement/workouts

Thanks for the encouragement, this is a tough time of year for me and a lot of last minute wedding drama has me wanting to sit on my butt and eat macaroni and cheese. I need to remember how much better I feel when I exercise! Meals have been a lot better already.

An endurance coach’s thoughts on cross fit. Interesting viewpoint.
http://8020endurance.com/why-i-try-to-talk-every-endurance-athlete-who-does-crossfit-or-is-interested-in-doing-crossfit-out-of-doing-crossfit/

I actually just finished watching Fittest on Earth - A Decade of Fitness on Netflix. It followed several of the elite athletes through the 2016 Crossfit games. Talk about disciplined. I finally understand some of @sushiritto ‘s workouts! I wouldn’t have survived the first event - a 7k trail run. Even if you don’t approve of CF it’s fascinating to get some insight into what makes these folks tick.

@ohiopublic As my mom used to say, “Oy vey!” Interesting viewpoint? It would be if he or she had even seen just ONE CrossFit workout, seen a programming cycle or truly watched the CF games, which at least @sabaray has.

Seriously, he or she simply doesn’t know enough about CF to comment. And I’m not kidding.

Planks on TV? That’s rich. =)) Planks are rarely programmed ever, even for schmucks like me. Too easy. Put the best CF athletes on TV and showcase them doing planks on TV? Come on. That’s a joke. Dumb.

Rowing doesn’t do much for cross-training endurance athletes? Ask a rower? It’s a complete workout. Programming of rowing can span from an endurance workout to a short HIIT workout. In fact, at the last CrossFit Games, the athletes had to row 42,195 meters. The fastest time was 2 hours and 44 minutes. Time cap was 4 hours. Just ROWING! That was just one workout on the first day. Rowing bad for endurance? Come on. Dumb.

My CF workout ALWAYS has a strength portion to the workout. Typically 30-45 minutes. And there’s always a cardio or HIIT portion at the end, usually supplementing or complimenting the strength portion. The entire workout isn’t HIIT.

There’s so much more wrong with this brief nonsense, but I agree with him or her that a cyclist doesn’t need to be doing handstand push-ups. A handstand push-up requires strong shoulders and arms. Plus an outstanding core to balance upside down. Have you looked at a cyclist’s arms and shoulders?

Here’s a question for @sabaray. In watching the “Fittest on Earth movie, did you see any athletes swimming, running and cycling? I’ll save you time the time and answer it myself. Every CF athlete, from little old me to the best CF athletes must be able to swim, bike and run. And do all of them REALLY well. CF is about exposing the weaknesses of athletes and then working on them to be better.

What’s maddening is that people read this crap, “like” it, and then repeat it, not knowing the actual truth. ~X(

And right after that 7K trail run, the athletes had to lift a “deadlift ladder.” Men: 425-615 lbs. Women: 275-415 lbs. They had one last workout after the “deadlift ladder”, before the 1st day’s events were complete.

For 99% of the public, it’s about the fear of the unknown. And for many, CF is too long, too difficult, too much dedication or they just don’t want to learn anything new/challenge themselves.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a reluctance to challenge oneself. I simply have no interest in lifting a deadlift ladder or slamming heavy weights onto the floor. I’ve observed CrossFit and if that’s your thing, great, but I believe for the average participant the injury potential is huge.

Definitely saw running, biking and swimming. One of the events was an ocean swim - men and women started together. Lots of running. You saw walk breaks during particularly challenging events - carrying sandbags up a “hill”. Pegboard climbs, rope climbs where the rope was dangling and it was all upper body - wow. The woman who was leading going into the last day - you knew she wasn’t going to win. The pressure of being the leader was too much.

I’m increasingly intrigued by CF. Physically I am much stronger than I’ve ever been in my adult life. I can learn and I like a challenge. The film opened with scenes showing a variety of individuals working out, some even older than I am! I think we get an idea of what CF is but it seems easily adaptable to current fitness levels. I don’t want to get hurt but I’ve gotten hurt running. The challenge for me is fitting it in. I’d have to give something up and that’s hard to think about.

No surprise, higher fitness is associated with longer survival.
