Yes, it does make sense. I got my PN L1 cert and subscribed to Pro Coach and am now going through it as my own “ client”. I am sure I will have loads of questions. Also put my daughter’s father-in-law on it so I can play around with customizing it for a real client. Thanks for your insight.
Congratulations, @MichaelNKat - I know being a well-rounded trainer is important to you and with that added nutrition certification you’ll be a great coach to your clients. I think a real niche for you could be working with the athlete population rather than the weight loss population - most of the complaints/concerns I hear from my running group relate to proper nutrition and hydration and how best to develop a plan. We’re certainly not an elite group of runners but I think that’s the population that’s overlooked - the middle aged not quite recreational runner but certainly not the high mileage runner either. Anyway, certainly feel free to PM me if I can be helpful.
12 degrees here this morning with lots of black ice, so I went to the gym. 5 minutes of walking to warm up, 25 minutes of treadmill running and 7 minutes of jogging to bring my HR down. Today’s workout called for 30-90 minutes of cardio so I got it done.
Article suggests that Americans are getting weaker in one generation. One example is an NHL prospect who could not do a single pullup at the combine.
http://nautil.us/issue/45/power/raising-the-american-weakling
A future professional sports prospect who couldn’t do A single pullup? Funny and yet unsurprising.
If you’ve ever seen the animated film “WALL E,” then the movie is a glimpse into our bleak future as human weaklings. Robots will be doing everything for us.
Find a rope and climb it! :))
I used to be on my feet, walking, a lot more in my previous job. Now I’m at a desk for hours and…ugh…it’s taking some getting used to!
Sometimes it’s pretty surprising that people who are athletes or consider themselves very into fitness don’t understand how important and beneficial pull-ups and chin-ups are to overall strength and conditioning. Or maybe these movements are avoided because they are pretty damn hard and few people understand how to train to develop the strength to do them. Hint: it’s not about the arms, it’s about the scapular muscles, lats and shoulders.
I managed to get out of Trader Joe’s with only the items on my list! Lots of tempting sweets calling my name, but they did not hop into my cart. Whew. Close call.
I did NOT want to lift today, but I did, and it was a good session.
This morning, I got concert tickets for February, going with a friend & her husband. Good for my well being to have things to look forward to.
I also have 3 other things on my social calendar this week, which is unusual for me.
Goals: I don’t want to lose too much muscle as I age, I want to keep hiking, and I want more options for social interaction.
Speaking of nutrition…This morning I got an email from my old CF program (I switched to another about 1-2 months ago) promoting their new online nutrition program for… $139/month? Holy cow! Maybe I should get into this Nutrition coaching business too. :))
My body is pretty beaten up, so on this 7th day (today), I’m resting. <:-P
Took a lot of mental effort to get through last night’s workout, which included lots of weighted lunges, wall balls and box jumps. And that was after a few rounds of squats, cleans and presses. I kinda wouldn’t mind just a run today, but I’m not a big fan of running at night with drivers the way they are out here. And it’s too darn cold for this weather wimp. What I need is access to @makemesmart 's Air Runner. :-j (I’m like a dog with a bone :D)
Wow @sushiritto, can’t believe you are taking a rest! And it is only Thursday!
We set up the air runner (slackers here)! I only did a little test run and I dare not to take my hands off the handles. So not yet able to give you a report! lol. Love it though: Very smooth and QUIET!
We have had five treadmills in the past 15 years with the last two lasting less than 2-yr each. Hopefully this one lasts a lot longer.
@Midwest67 I always buy more than planned whenever I stop by at TJ’s.
I’ll join the group in being jealous of your new treadmill, @makemesmart . It does take a bit to get the hang of it without the motor moving you along but I’ve no doubt you’ll be moving right along in no time.
I’ve had a busy week at work. However, I’ve gotten the workouts in. TRX class, Circuit class, private Pilates training. Today is definitely a rest day! I pushed out of my comfort zone and went to a get together of my studio pals and it was a great time. Like @Midwest67, I really want more real life social interactions. Just need to do it!
I find this week to be challenging every year with eating and exercise. We get so many food gifts in our office it’s not even funny and I find myself eating way too many treats. My goal for this week is to watch what I’m mindlessly munching. Wish me luck with that!
@sabaray I agree that it’s hard when there are tempting goodies right. there.
So far, our work meetings have not been full of candies and other treats. There is no holiday party planned.
I’m secretly hoping my kids do not bake cookies when they are home for the holidays, but if they do, I’ll not say a word and just deal.
I’ll miss the hiking club’s holiday party, but I’m leading a hike next week and hosting back at my house afterwards. Planning on having some beers and easy appetizers.
Reporting back on the air runner @sushiritto @sabaray DH did 10’ run and told me his trick of running on it, I did 20’ afterwards. Definitely a lot harder than regular treadmill. I was much slower (only able to run 1.7 miles for this 20’!) and it felt like running uphill most of the time. It is very comfortable in terms of pressure on knees/ankles/soles (I didn’t wear running shoes this time). I can see myself getting faster and running longer on it soon.
Beautiful day today in Chicagoland. I had to take my hat off during today’s hike bc I was so warm!
Did 11.2 miles, and my legs were howling by the end. I think I was dehydrated.
I saw a garter snake sunning itself on the trail. DUDE, really? Go hibernate! You know I hate snakes! It’s mid-December in northern Illinois!!!
It’s supposed to be mild all week, so I’ll get in some good 3 mile+ walks with the dog.
The author of the article has a client who wants to achieve a sub two hour marathon? =))
A sub-three hour marathon, Sushi.
Not that lofty a goal for a decent distance runner dude. Betcha you can do that with proper training!
I saw a sub two hour marathon earlier as well - looks like they corrected that typo. I think we all know how difficult the two hour barrier is.
Yes, thanks sabaray, it was a typo that got corrected. Originally it said 2-hours and I’m sure the author quickly heard of the “mistake.”
I laughed because the author has a bias and also a lack of knowledge and understanding beyond just endurance running.
And nope, no 3-hour marathons for me. BUT, I have run several half marathon obstacle races (Spartan Race and Tough Mudder) in under 4 hours. A marathon isn’t interesting to me.
At least I can do ONE pullup, actually a lot more, but I’d like to see what % of marathoners can do that. Or how about a handstand pushup? :-j Different strokes for different follks.
No pull-ups or handstand push-ups, but I’m working on it!
Slow weekend for me other than a big walk with the pups. I was tired Saturday and needed the rest.
Today was the start of a new cycle of workouts. With my coach’s guidance, I’m sticking with the shorter workouts coupled with some aerobic activity. Today was weighted reverse lunges followed by goblet squats for multiple rounds, then some time on the elliptical. Tomorrow is a cardio day so I’m going to try to get a run in. I’m signed up for several specialty classes at the studio in the next week, but I have to be careful to not overdo it.
Maybe some folks need to look up Matt Fitzgerald’s credentials. He’s got a pretty good understanding of endurance sports and triathlons. Admittedly he doesn’t have much knowledge about sport boxes like CrossFit, orange theory, etc.
