Wow, that’s a long hike @Midwest67 !
It certainly felt like a long hike!
Humbling when I think about one of the club members knocking back 20 miles each day, for months, with a pack on, up & down those mountains, thru-hiking the AT.
I’m not built for that! Even if my body could do it, not sure I’ve got the mental fortitude.
I’m waiting to hear you say you’ve taken up trail running, @Midwest67. And frankly, I think if you decided to hike the AT I’m pretty confident you would do it based on the goal setting and achieving you’ve already demonstrated. I’m still in awe of your lifting success. 155 pounds!
I’ve continued with my boot camps and Pilates with some running here and there. I’ve been walking Sabapup quite a bit more in my hilly neighborhood and trying to fit some rest days in. I was treating Pilates as a “rest” day but it’s definitely a workout. Warm, wet and humid this weekend so true rest days.
Well, thank you! I’m 99% certain I’ll never be a runner again (ran in my teens and 20s).
I’m currently fired up about continuing the strength training. It’s just so encouraging to see I’m getting stronger with only two sessions a week, a few simple compound exercises, and not exhausting myself. Almost ready to purchase that squat rack!
I am unable to do two unassisted chin-ups in a row (1.5!), but I managed five sets of one rep this week.
Knock on wood I manage to stay uninjured. Talking to you, right shoulder. And sciatica.
@Midwest67 Well if you did get 2 pull-ups in a row that easy and fast, then I may have to switch to your program.
I’ve got an appointment at a CF gym for one-on-one coaching to learn a proper low bar back squat & standing overhead press.
Wow, we’re getting very technical now. Low bar squat? Sheesh, I only high bar squat, since I’m trying to build power for my cleans and snatches. Also, I doubt that I’d have that kind of shoulder mobility to maintain proper technique and balance with heavier weight.
For the past two days, I’ve been teaching someone at my gym how to front squat. He lacks the wrist flexibility and hasn’t built his front rack position, but he wants more core strength.
While there, might want to have them demo a snatch and clean for you. ??
Exactly! I’m ahead of myself & assuming I’ll have the shoulder mobility. We’ll see!
I feel like an uncoordinated klutz with the SOP.
Power Clean? Not a chance, mister.
Good one-on-one instructional session at the CF gym.
He got me up to a single at 100# for the low bar back squat. The movement felt good. Shoulder did not object too much to the bar position. Goblets squats have been irritating my right shoulder (holding up that heavy weight).
Standing overhead press, started with an empty 15# training bar and ended with an empty 35# Bella Bar. This was very helpful. I don’t know how to explain it except this movement is not intuitive for me. I am not sure how it is supposed to feel, and it mostly feels uncomfortable and awkward.
So we did a lot of reps with empty bars and he corrected, fixed, and tweaked as needed. When I was getting tired, my form started to break – leaning back and elbows moving out to the side – and he called me out on it and I was able to “feel it” happening. I need more practice with this one. He thought it would come together as I get stronger, and thought part of it is I’m not used to the movement so it is feeling foreign.
Really glad I went in for this.
That’s awesome Midwest67!
The problem that I often see in the gym with the standing OH presses is that folks don’t “poke their head through the picture frame.” and also their heels staying down. The bar (OH) must be over the middle of your feet and not in front of your feet.
This week has been a de-load week for me. So, lots of cardio both traditional (running, rowing and resistance bike) and low-weight barbell cycling plus the typical walls balls, burpees, jump rope, etc. Yesterday, was high volume low weight DL’s, bench press and front squats. Seven minutes of each movement (3 minutes of rest in between) with small increases in weight.
Rogue has weight vests on sale right and I’m considering buying one. I’ve been sitting on the fence about getting one. Occasionally my workouts call for one, but I’ll usually sub in a weighted bag of some sort. A vest would be great to have, but they’re expensive and I won’t be using it on a daily basis.
I was peeking in at the end of a CF class before it was my turn at 10:30.
Respect. I’d be absolutely miserable with kind of workout.
Get the vest, man, you’ve earned it!
Anyone uses apps to work out? I just started using Nike Training Club, so far I love it. Any other good apps?
Garmin Connect if you use a Garmin watch. Uploads to RunningAhead and Strava for me, as well. The Apple Watch apps seem OK, but I prefer Garmin for GPS/running.
@SincererLove what are your fitness activities? Running? Classes? Hiking? I think there are some apps that work better with certain activities.
Afraid I’m no help on the apps. I know people who use the Peleton app and like it but I have no personal experience.
Interesting article in the NYT yesterday - https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/16/well/eat/why-eating-processed-foods-might-make-you-fat.html
My first ever pair of trail shoes arrived this week. Tomorrow is my usual run group, but Sunday I am trying out some trails with some experienced runners who have offered to show me the ropes. Have to see how it goes.
I love my Dirty Girl gaiters for the trail. Keeps out trail debris. https://dirtygirlgaiters.com
If I end up doing this on a regular basis, I’ll definitely be picking those up, @Midwest67 - thanks for the tip. I might check at the bike shop and see if they have anything similar on hand prior to Sunday. I am nervous but excited to try something new.
@abasket, I just did a HIT class and used the running cool down on the app today. You can search for all kinds of time length, muscle group, equipment or not, etc. I am now a true believer of the app.
I am running 2 or 3 times a week and what I really need is a lot of upper body workout. Lol. My fitness app (Samsung Health) shows that I am top 4% of my age group. I am happy.
DH and D17 are at the Grand Canyon today, they will do the rim to rim hike (23 miles) tomorrow morning. D hasn’t been training much due to finals and such, let’s hope all is well for their hike.
Run to rim hike is on my bucket list. I’d love to hear a hike report when they are done
