Disappearing Dining Rooms

That view! To die for!

I have an oak pedestal table, quite old, that has three leaves in my breakfast room. We don’t put the leaves in unless we are having a crowd. Our chairs, however, are only about 15 years old…oak made on North Carolina. The old ones just weren’t very study.

This set is one of the things my DD wants…it’s where we eat everyday…so she will need to wait a bit!

We have an eat-in kitchen with a table that seats 6 and 3 stools at the counter. The living and dining rooms are actually one large room, but we’ve set off the DR with columns.

The DR table is an antique we bought years ago. It has leaves and can seat 12 with them all in. The table is used at all holidays and quite often when the girls come over with partners.

Right now, there’s a bunch of crxx on it from our trip that I need to make room for in the pantry or hand off to my sisters. It also functions as a sewing table and general collection area.

I’ve been saying for 30 years that I’d like French doors at the back, leading onto the deck. I don’t think that’s ever going to happen, though.

You’d think that with 3 dining spaces that I’d be using one of them. Nope. H is at our other place, so I’m eating dinner on the LR sofa.

Dining on the deck. Not firing up the table yet because it is still nice without additional heat.

And the wine.

Okay, I’ll play, too. Here’s our rarely used dining room. We’ve been in this house for 3 years and have probably used the DR no more than 10 times, if that. I do wish I had bought a smaller table, though. We have a really big kitchen island for daily meals.

Nothing quite like a glass of wine in CA!

Me, too!

@rockymtnhigh2 if I had those gorgeous BIG windows with that view, I’d use it as much as possible.

We’re doing some remodeling right now and we initially struggled with whether to repurpose our dining room or move the dining table to the living room. We just couldn’t figure out how to make it work in a way we liked, so we’re keeping the dining room but we’re repainting (the entire house interior) and changing out the chandeliers and ceiling fans.

I/We are fans of unconventional dining spaces.

As I mentioned our new-to-us house didn’t have an eat in kitchen or designated dining space besides the open concept living room where we didn’t want to park a big dining table. 90+% of the time it’s jist me and H and we don’t entertain much.

So I work in progress with decor here’s what was a 4th bedroom, now is a dining space/office like space kiddie corner from our kitchen . (I do not like matchy stuff and like to combine different types of decor- still on the hunt for additional MCM chairs to be similar to the tall arched ones I have. Table is from the late 1800’s from the farm of an uncle. I have several leaves but can currently sit 8.

The closet we opened up for a ā€œbarā€ cabinet

But our real fav dining spaces are open to nature : year around dining in the sun porch and outside dining by the pool or river as much as we can! I adore outside dining space

And finally this antique gateleg table that serves as a sofa table most of the time but we also open up one or both sides to eat at or to serve drinks/snacks when guests are over - it’s right in the middle of our room flow!

Thank you! There is another level of deck closer to the water but no dining space down there.
