This thread is so useless. People keep asking questions that nobody answers (either b/c they just ignore them or b/c they simply don’t know the answer).

borkborkbork, I think it’s more that you’re asking in the wrong thread. If you’re applying this year, you should be asking in the 2011-2012 thread…cuz this thread is full of people that applied for the scholarship a year ago, so nobody really checks it often anymore. But to answer your question, I believe that 60K incomes are considered as much as 8K incomes…seeing as if they considered 8K incomes more, nobody with 60K income would win the scholarship (but there are people with 60K incomes that have gotten the scholarship).

and hyperline, on Monday I received something in the mail with some information…but I still haven’t gotten my e-ticket for the plane flight =( I will call tomorrow I guess

What?! That’s so unfair! But how would you know if they gave no preference at all? We are assuming that families with 8K incomes don’t do as well in school. Is it a combination of merit and need, or just merit?

Damn people who make 60k make over the required tuition for expensive private schools (53k at most). Wth can you do with 8k? NOTHING!

But thanks for actually attempting to answer the question. Fwiw, the 2011-2012 thread isn’t very helpful either.

The 2011-2012 thread will probably get a lot more busy once the deadline gets closer. We’re still over two months away from the deadline right now so people aren’t panicking about it yet, haha.

Good luck. I’m really not sure as to whether it’s completely merit-based or both merit-and-need based…you could call the GMSP number to ask and check?

NYSP…any suggestion for the young fellow like us haha…,am senior (HS)

Question from scholar:
Do they cover the summer savings expectation?
Winter Clothing?
Fitness center fees?
-Thanks

Summer contribution, NO
Winter clothing, NO
Fitness Center, NO

However, your work study will be covered. You can use that for your clothing, gym, and other expenses. Your school will get a check and disperse it to you each semester for that. Summer contribution, you are required to provide.

Sorry you feel this way. Most of the questions that people ask however have been asked and answered before, and most people don’t read the entire thread. I have stated multiple times that simply reading EVERY bit of the gates website would answer probably 90% of the questions here, and the other 10%, if not answered by somebody who actually knows it, would be answered by Gates at gmsp.org in a timely fashion

^ Thanks. I got a hold of them and found out that those who are more needy don’t have any advantage over other Pell-eligible applicants. That really blows.

If you’ve always been an A student (~4.0 GPA), but senior year you have like half A’s/half B’s for six classes, would that significantly reduce your chances?

Hello! I have a few questions. Do the people grade based on grammar, punctuation, etc? Or is it more content based?

Content, but it’s always nice to have good grammar and punctuation, it makes you look better overall in any situation

This might be a dumb question but do the responses to the questions have to be fully developed essays or can they be short answers? Everyone seems to be saying that they should be essays.

how should we calculate the GPA in the academic section?
and for the grades do we report them as seen on the report card or take off the extra points and give it unweighted?
and are AP classes considered honors?

OMG I GOT FINALIST <3 (so happy, that means I have a chance) my gosh, this letter came so unexpectedly (x

(This does not have to be the college or university you ultimately attend; please see the enclosed Frequently Asked Questions document for additional information.)

What percent of finalists actually get the scholarship?

I am also a finalist, from S.C. - I have a question concerning my SAR.

For some reason, my SAR says that the department of immigration didn’t have enough information to prove that I am a US resident. What do I do??? I am FREAKING OUT! Can I still send my SAR? Would Gates Millennium people see this? Please help me!

hi. if we dont get an email from GMS. DOES that mean we are rejected?

whoaa notifications come out already???! I was planning to call GMS about when notifications would come out. From what I have observed in previous GMS posts here on CC, e-mails come out in batches in terms of race/groups? Assuming that you are Asian/Korean, does that mean the Asian batch of notifications come out first/now?

I am a finalist from oklahoma and i was wondering if anyone knows what happens if you make it through the selection round in april?

If you make it then you’re a scholar and receive the scholarship.
