oooh i missed national merit. They can go for free!! All in. wow!!

A safety isn’t a safety if it isn’t affordable. You’re not going to want to go into a pile of debt to attend a school that you applied to as a “backup safety.”

How about adding a school like U of Tulsa as another safety? You’d get a guaranteed full ride as a merit semifinalist (even if you didn’t make finalist, although it’s extremely likely that you will); semifinalists taking them up on this amazing deal comprise more than a quarter of each incoming class. They have both Chem and ChemE (and also a dual-degree International Science & Engineering program within which you could combine either of those STEM majors with a foreign language degree, and do a fully-funded five-year program that includes both study and internship abroad). Tulsa is a mid-sized university, which aligns with your apparent preference based on your overall list. And it would be even more affordable than Rutgers, without requiring you to live at home. Could be worth an app.

I know it’s late, but did you look at Delaware? They have some nuce scholarships for chemistry. Iirc, the Duponts are to thank for that. But perhaps a more exciting back up than commuting?
