Dishwasher Woes

Definitely helped with water spotting and film. Worth a try. At around $4, cheaper than a repair man or a new dishwasher.

If your issue is just that pods don't dissolve, just throw it into the bottom of the dishwasher once it is in the main cycle. Or get some powder or liquid option. Definitely take all the tubing off and check out the sprayers, arms, filter., if your DW has an inbuilt chopper, they can be replaced, Clean all filters and sprayers, cleaner dispenser, etc. Consider changing hosing. Personally though, at 10 yrs old, I would just buy new. My DW is a workhorse.

how bout using the liquid dishwasher soap instead of powder or those pods? Try that and see…a lot, cheaper than a new dishwasher.

Thanks all for the recommendations for hard water, our water on a scale of 1-10 is a 15…so hopefully these will help!

Funny (well, not funny, really. . .) thing–we are having a similar problems with our GE dishwasher that is about 8 years old. I have looked at new ones more than once. I really want to replace it. Ours was probably a lower/mid-priced one, and the racks are all rusty, too. It seems the soap wasn’t dissolving because the water wasn’t filling up. I could hear the water spraying, but definitely not getting into the machine like it used to. It sounded different. It looks like the water inlet valve may be blocked or the pump is clogged or . . .something. We still use the machine, but I have to babysit it and pour in a few quarts of water every time it drains/starts a new part of the cycle. H has ordered a part (less than 25$). I heard that dishwashers last 7-10 years. I think it is time for a new one. I have never liked a single dishwasher in any house I’ve ever lived in. We have to practically wash the dishes before we put them in (heavy rinse/brush, no food particles. . .) Does anyone have a dishwasher that actually cleans well without ā€œpre-washing?ā€

I don’t rinse my dishes at all. I have a Bosch. It’s 10 years old. It was clogged a few years ago and I called Bosch, they told me to get the dishwasher cleaner and it’s been fine since. It’s really quiet, too, which was my biggest priority since my kitchen is open to the family room,

My dishwasher is a KitchenAid and quite old. Never had to rinse dishes in the first 15 years of its life. Now we do but I can’t complain considering how long we’ve had it.

I also have a bosch. I just pick up big pieces from plates before putting it in the DW. Comes out very clean.

Most of the American brands have a grinder in the recirculating pump. Eventually it becomes clogged. You may need to replace it if cleaners don’t work. It’s not an expensive part. Also make sure your drain line is above the inlet to your disposal ; this will prevent food backup into the line.

Bosch and most of the Euro brands do not have grinders. They tend to be more reliable and clean a lot better. I’d replace your GE with one if it does not work out.

I have an LG not top of the range, maybe mid, has steam and eco settings, SS inside and out. The filter is really easy to clean (I do it at least 3 times a week) and it has changed my mind about inbuilt grinder versions. Coming from a background of the euro ones that were just dreadful, this is a delight despite the lack of a grinder. Of course there are problems with the tines in the adjustable racks, but I don’t care LOL. I put almost everything in the DW and it doesn;t seem to have any trouble. Even my insulated polar water bottles.

Will be buying 2 as soon as the dust settles on our house purchase.

Another vote for Lemishine. It has made a WORLD of difference at our house. We have very hard water, lots of calcium and iron. Lemishine has all my glasses looking brand new and the inside of the dishwasher looking cleaner. The squishy water sounds sound stronger, too, if that makes sense. I’m a huge believer in Lemishine for anyone who has hard water or waterflow issues. (It’s also amazing to descale my teapot)

One word of caution with Lemishine is don’t use it for things like beer mugs or coffee cups that have those logos or decals screened on them as it will remove them.

Stuff will eventually etch and scratch with that kind of additive. Don’t use it if you have any decent glassware.

I’ve used it on my everyday glassware for at least 2-3 years now and haven’t noticed anything beyond the type of stuff any glassware develops with use.

I always hand wash my nicer stuff anyway as it is more delicate.
