This is kind of off topic, but I’ve always been wondering about when Brenda Song will leave Disney Channel and start working for the big screen? I saw her in Get A Clue a while ago and I think she has a lot of potential. The quality of Disney Channel shows are going down, and she’s a great actress, so I don’t see why she isn’t getting better roles for another company…

I can’t believe this… People will never be satisfied. First they complain that all asians on t.v. are too stereotypical and 2 dimensional, then they complain that they prefer that (this thread) because it’s less insulting? People are just trying to be themselves, and if you use race to define them then of course you are going to think everything is racism. And guess what? Many people talk like that, and even if it’s over the top its done for the humor.

I don’t think it is that bad, have you seen the asian actress on Suite Life of Zack and Cody? She’s really popular and has been featured in a lot of other shows and movies

…Brenda Song!

thanks anisha, i forgot her name for a minute.
yeah i dont know when she’ll leave disney, alyson michalka has hollywood potential too. I didn’t know brenda was so “young”, she just turned 17, and is still on Disney haha

haha no problem, sarah

I kind of don’t like alyson michalka…I mean the only reason I watch phil of the future is for PHILLLL:):) HAHA
and that whole aly+aj thing has ALREADY BEEN DONE. them and the duff sisters (hilary+hayley) are trying to steal all the attention from mark-kate and ashley, whom despite the bad PR, have thrown themselves into the realm of fashion and have gotten all that success without being anchored down by disney.

Phil is a HAWT piece of arse haha
I agree, marykate & ashley did really well, it all started with full house.
I dunno, I love alyson michalka, she’s so pretty! And she sings so well! And yeah they duo thing has been done, but they sound pretty good together?

yeah. what i think needs to change is that when alyson michalka is put in slightly more serious roles (like the one in Now You See It…it was semi serious, atleast), they need to make her look more serious. As in they need to stop dolling her up with funky hairstyles and earrings and bubblegum pink lipgloss. If they play down her clothes and makeup, then it won’t be so distracting and her acting will be the one thing that shines through.

I’m an Asian living in Romania and my best friend was a Sudanese, I dated a Caucasian guy who was literally a ■■■■■■■ (his parents married when he was five, I think), (and dated several Asian/mixed guys in past countries I’ve lived), I hung out with a white kid whose dad was a missionary, and gee, I’ve met Eastern Europeans. I also eat lunch with a group of Koreans, an American and Pakistani who wears a head scarf. In other countries I’ve lived in, I met and befriended a lot of people of different ethinicities. So it’s possible for different people of different ethinicities/minorities to be friends.

um thats not what we’re talking about.

From the original post.

I used to adore Disney, back in the Winnie the Pooh and Goof Troop days…
le sigh.
Anywho, Disney does that to a lot of races, take the Proud Family for example, neck-rolling slang-using African American family who’s outrageous personality is an entertaining stereotype. But then you have another show, such as That’s So Raven (I love that show) about another African American family who doesn’t fit that stereotype.

Just as in the examples you used about the two Asian shows, Jake is somewhat of a stereotype while Brenda Song’s character isn’t.

You could look at this in many fashions depending on your pessimism:
A) Disney is celebrating the cultures of minorities by sticking to their “themes”
B) Disney is stereotyping
or
C) Disney is removing stereotyping by focusing on the character, not the race (i.e. Brenda Song’s character and Raven Symone)
D) Disney is attempting to asymilate the characters by not focusing on race, instead creating them to fit into what’s the majority.

:/ I’m not sure if that made any sense, I tend to suck at explaining my irrational theories.

OT: I think Brenda Song is adorable in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, it certainly suits her, and I doubt she was casted just because of her race. It was on talent. Or that’s my perception.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE HATE HATE EVERY SINGLE SHOW ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL! Every single white punk on those stupid shows act like some rapper. Its like “DUDZ, r u like gonna go to the dance dudz, peace out yo.” I absolutely hate it, HATE IT!
And I love the political correctness on those shows with an asian, one black, white, mexican, and native american. Disney channel should be sued for idiocricy. BLAH!

i havent heard that a lot from disney. when sometimes they are trying to show ‘this goofy guy’ who’s at every school, you may hear it…but not that often so that you’ll get annoyed by it.

if you mean some of the old ones (like sister sister or boy meets world), they are not on most of the time now. now, it’s all about phill of the future (which seems VERY lame) and that’s so raven. ;)

Whatever they say, it gets on my nerves! I watched a show on Disney once with a group of dumb kids of every single minority you could think of, but it was just so ridiculous. Eh, and the acting on those shows are beyond horrible. Disney should be outlawed in the United States.

Disney earns for US millions of dollars every year. for a country who’s crazy for money, Disney’s like a big pot of gold.

Either that or completely dumbing our children down. Personally, I think Disney is damaging to the mind and spirit. With any regard, we still have Wal-Mart Supercenters which will fuel our economy for posterity.

i don’t know how disney damages our children, but i do think that sometimes they unintentionally give the children wrong ideas

It’s true, Mickey Mouse has a scheme to make the entire population into walking morons. They use their catchy showtunes in attempts to hypnotize us, the Mary Poppins songs are really just world domination lyrics in disguise.
Then he and Donald will put our blathering country into spaceships and shoot us to the moon. They will then proceed take over the nation - renaming it to DisneyCountry. That is the first step in world control. Next, they are coming after Japan.

/True Story

I’m Chinese and I don’t really care. I don’t see Disney being protested by Asian people. If the people being demeaned as you’re implying don’t seem to care much, I daresay it’s a non issue.

“Now you may be able to guess what I’m trying to say: Disney treats Asians as people who are all about Chinese characters, the color red, and martial arts fighting.”

The show explicitly shows that they’re Chinese. So I don’t understand how they’re misrepresenting all Asians as Chinese. I also recall an episode of that show (I watch it with my 5 year old nephew when I babysit him) where they had an Olympics of sorts. Lo and behold, guess what? There were Scots, Africans and people of all nationalities turning into dragons.

The girl he is “crushing on” ,as you say, is Caucasian. But wait, she’s a ninja. How can that be? She’s not Chinese. Wait, ninjas are Japanese.

As other people have pointed out, you complain about Disney depicting Asians this way yet you say that it is very uncommon for people to have a multi-racial group of friends. A little presumptious aren’t we?

“He talks like a wannabe-African American guy.” That sounded kind of stereotypical to me. Define “wannabe-African American guy.” Are you saying that an “African American guy” speaks in only ebonics?

HAHAHAHAH! Wannabe African-American! HAHHAHAHAHAH! I know, on those foolish shows, you see that often. I am sorry, brethren, but in most instances, certain races and minorities only associate with their own people. so, these Disney shows are only portraying a fantasy world.

Man Justinian, I agree with you 100%. You’re gonna make an excellent lawyer. lol.

But seriously, it’s so stupid how there has to be a Hispanic, black, and an Asian kid in each frame. THATS NOT HOW IT IS IN REAL LIFE. God forbid there’s more than two white characters in a show.
