Diversity. Why is it good? Why is it a goal of Universities?

I’m in the “it benefits the college” camp. Everyone knows the story of the most meritocratic LAC of the mid-20th century and how it rejected Barack Obama as a first-year admit, thus dashing its hopes of having a future president among its alum. Also, there’s been ample publicity lately about how difficult it is to inspire a love of learning for its own sake when the classroom is filled with people who are afraid to take any risks, are constantly worried about their gpas, and see college chiefly as a way to retain their family’s wealth:
