Wouldn’t that make you African-American…aka BOTH? How is that comparable to being Hispanic?
Ay, I’m Middle Eastern and you are not allowed to self-identify as African-American (unfortunately) if you are Arab. Yes, it’s in Africa, but you have to check ‘white’.
@0br0123, OP is Middle Eastern and, to be honest, it’s a little rude to say he does not face discrimination. Discrimination against Arabs is even more rampant than that against African-Americans, yet it’s so institutionalized there are no programs in place for combatting it (we have to check ‘white’ even though we are not white on forms to avoid us unintentionally getting any form of privilege).
You’re an idiot if you think persians/ arabs/ middle easterners face more discrimination than blacks IN AMERICA. You’re dismissed.
OP you are not required to disclose your race if you do not wish to.
@Anonymoose3 His dad’s 100% Jewish family lived in Africa for two generations. I don’t think he’s Middle Eastern.
If I were to move to China and have a child. My child would not be Chinese. He would be a white from China.
@0br0123, lol dismissing the opposition speaks more of your intelligence than it does of mine.
Ever looked into the other side of your argument? Turn on the news right now and I guarantee at least 1 newscaster is bashing the ------ islamists.
Discrimination is neither a contest nor a zero-sum game. Blacks have it bad, profiled as thugs. Middle-Easterners have it bad, profiled as terrorists.
@anonymoose3 Turn on the news right now, and i can assure you a story about police brutality against blacks will show up. Let’s see, we have the UVa student, the disabled scredriver weilding kid shot in front of his mom. Just last week we were covering the incident in Wisconsin. Are you blind? We can barely go a week without hearing about another unarmed young black man killed by police who are free of charge. I absolutely agree that middle easterners face discrimination. I live in a dominantly middle eastern community and a good 50% of my close friends are middle easterners. But let me tell you something; Middle Easterners did not face slavery in America, they were not lynched or anything, they did not have to fight years for their right to vote, they were not constantly oppressed and they are not killed by police for waling down the street. In fact, racism towards middle easterners only increased after 9/11, the war in Iraq, and several other terrorist bombings. I’m in a group that fights for the rights and equal treatment of middle easterns in America. Unfortunately, you are clearly an idiot and your arguments is invalid in most everyone’s eyes. So please, dismiss yourself.
And about the news thing…lol
Fox News might as well be called “F*ck all black people including the President - News”
@SaphireNY But Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. You can be white and Hispanic if you speak Spanish and were born in a Latin American country.
So if my mom and dad non Hispanic moved to Mexico while pregnant with me to work as an archeologist and we lived there for 4 years that could let me be Hispanic?
@bodangles Nope, I’m just African.
Pfft, no one should watch Faux News
@fallenwinter Mmmmmmkay. Well, people can always call themselves whatever they want.
@bodangles I sense sarcasm. My ethnicity is Nigerian therefore, I am African.
@fallenwinter I don’t understand your choice of labels, but I don’t have to, it’s your life. That’s all I meant.
@fallenwinter I feel you dude. My parents are immigrants from Nigeria. I have a very Igbo name. I’ve even lived in Nigeria for a bit. I prefer the label African because it corresponds with my traditional culture and lifestyle. others who don’t understand simply don’t have the perspective we do.
@0br0123 I think this is a bit off topic but I’d just like to point out that I’m black and I’ve never been overtly discriminated against, whereas I know someone who is middle eastern and was turned away at a restaurant and told “we do not serve your kind here.” That kind of stuff doesn’t really happen to black people in this country anymore (or else it’d be a big news story). I know one anecdotal account isn’t enough to refute your claims but I’m just saying…
@fallenwinter of curiosity, would you consider yourself Nigerian-American?
@0br0123 Exactly. I have an Igbo name as well, and my parents have brought me up in a “Nigerian way”. I feel the term African American is more for blacks who’s parents aren’t immigrants from Africa and aren’t really in touch with their African culture.
@scholarme When someone asks me what I am I simply say “Nigerian”.
The question on the college app asks for your race. They don’t ask for the locations your family camped out at over the generations. You can identify yourself however you want but your race does not change.
