Hello! I transferred into film (Critical Studies) from a CC after being rejected out of high school. I took two semesters of work at my CC (30 credits, the amount you need for them to focus primarily on your college record and so that you don’t have to submit test scores) and transferred this past fall. I had a low GPA in high school, somewhere in the lower half of the 3.0-3.4 range, ACT of I think 32 and SAT around 2100. When I sent in my application after my first semester of college I had something like a 3.8 with 14 credit hours. They did not ask me for an SGR, but in my acceptance letter they specifically said that I would only be accepted provided I could maintain a 3.5 at my CC, so I sent them my spring semester grades anyway (3.6 GPA with 16 credit hours). I had a lot of ECs from HS on my app the first time around, but in CC I only did a couple (including a full time job at a movie theater and some other movie-related work). The Cinema school in particular also did something where they asked current students to recommend friends of theirs that they knew were applying for admission, and three of my friends submitted my name. I have no idea whether or not that influenced their decision at all, but they haven’t done that program again this year as far as I know. The Cinema school also places heavy emphasis on your writing ability. I’m not going to lie or act modest or anything; I consider myself a good writer and I got into numerous other top film schools out of high school but USC was always my top choice so I chose to save money and attend CC for a year. It paid off in the long run, was completely worth it, and I have absolutely no regrets about it. If you get rejected this year, apply next year. If you get rejected next year, apply again. You may as well keep trying if you really want to go there.
