Do most internationals have their parents accompanying them for the first day?

spazman,

It depends on your parents’ comfort level in letting you go off by yourself, financial concerns (travel expenses, hotel cost, etc). If they have wanted to visit NYC, this might be a good chance while seeing you settled in at NYU.

The other matter is you are probably best to leave things you need to be purchased here in the USA. NYU sponsors a shuttle for freshmen to get to the nearby Bed, Bath, and Beyond with a lot of what is needed in a dorm room. The biggest item might be your purchase of a microwave/ fridge. Usually, in a double, each roommate buys one of the two. Or these can be rented from a company that will be in contact with you as a new NYU student.

I recommend you to take a look at my thread on “What to Bring to College” and determine what you really must bring from England and what you can buy here in NYC.

Pay particular attention to my Post #3 with an abbreviated list of items for the dorm room.
