Do most students aiming for selective colleges take the SAT and/or ACT in junior or senior year?

S took the ACT, SAT, and 3 subject tests all between April & June of 2015, at the tail end of his senior year. He looked at where he was considering applying (no HYPS), where he would be happiest attending, and called it done. He was well within range for the schools, and it’s worked out so far in the EAs he’s heard from.

He knew he was going to have a full slate of stuff to get through Senior year, and while he probably could’ve raised his Math SAT, his Math subsection on the ACT was great, so he didn’t bother. “If a school is going to reject me because of a score on my Math SAT despite a 36 on the Math subsection of the ACT, it’s not a place I want to be.” He just sent all scores to all schools, figuring that if nuances like that were going to make or break a decision, it was a game he didn’t want to play and it’d be a way of making sure he didn’t end up somewhere that took testing too seriously.

So far, so good.

End of his senior year 2many? Do you mean junior year?

Also check SAT days and see if they conflict with Proms, Games, Concerts, etc.

Oops - yes, thanks @mom2and - end of his JUNIOR year. My coffee is broken today.

And @bopper has a very good point. S took the SAT the same day as the senior prom. I’m sure the prom was scheduled for that date knowing that none of the seniors would still be testing, but my son, then a junior, was (and is still) dating someone who was then a senior. He had a chorus concert on Friday night, SAT on Saturday morning, napped, then was off to the prom. Crazy day!
