Do odds increase when applying to more reaches?

S23 applied to 18 schools for Engineer major so far. Two safety schools accepted him (Oregon State and UofArizona). But one reach school (Texas A&M OOS) also accepted him against the odd. I actually told him not to apply to Texas A&M, because he already applied to other similar reach schools, UW, Ohio State and Purdue … But S23 insisted and got accepted. Now we see he may actually have a chance to other reach schools also … Definition of “Reach” vary from person to person. If you are not sure, may as well apply, at least you have a chance.

I tend to think there are two levels of reach. One being the academic and the other being the financial piece. Some schools that have low acceptance rates, also are tremendously generous for merit and need-based. I’ve told my son not to focus solely on the “targets” and “safeties” but to swing for the fences on some reaches.
