<li>High death rate of infants and children, which means that parents have lots of kids in hopes that some will survive.</li>
<li>Unlike in the industrialized countries, where children are a drain on a family’s economy, in developing countries, children add to a family’s economy. They are workers contributing to the family income. They also are who the parents will rely upon in the parents’ old age in a country that lacks retirement and social security benefits.</li>

<p>**i don’t think so. there is hardly any female infanticide in bangladesh, but it is common in some parts of india. i dont think people there ever carry this attitude regarding their offspring. **</p>

<p>this is also true. the situations in these types of countries are very complex to say the least, and can’t be lumped as the result of “pathetic” villagers. one of the main reasons that they have so many babies is not only because of the lack of contraception. they also have sex very frequently. the lower class farmer works all day outside…at night, one of the few forms of enjoyment he can get is sex from his wife. </p>
<p>to tell the truth i’m beginning to doubt a relation between high birth rates and poverty ridden people. for example, my mom has 7 siblings…but guess what? my mom is an M.D./M.Phil. and her sister was the first female engineer in bangladesh. i know a bengali friend who has 6 siblings but his dad was CEO of Beximco ($4bn revenue corporation). i don’t think i know anyone from bangladesh who doesn’t have less than 5 in their family, except for bangladeshis in NYC. </p>
<p>india is also overpopulated but it has a $4 trillion economy compared to US’s $12 trillion. i dont think birth rates are really the problem here.</p>
