Incomprehensible in your opinion, that is.

Do I think there are mythical pink unicorns floating around in the clouds? no.

Do I think there is a god? no.

Do I think there is some kind of natural or scientific force that controls the what/why of the universe? yes

Yeah, I definitely believe there’s a God. But I’m not religious and I definitely don’t believe in Jesus or recognize the Bible as a legitimate source of information.

I do. I get all the information on the latest Paris Hilton scandals from the Bible.

This reminds me of Aristotle and Plato’s astronomy. Aristotle believed that something could not come from nothing. Therefore, the universe is eternal.

I personally do not think we can ever know the origins of the universe, and if there is a higher spiritual force, they would want you to accept that there are not rational explanations for everything. That, in my eyes, is the foundation of religion: faith. Faith in that you accept certain things are unexplainable. It is reminiscent of the monsatic scholars during the Middle Ages: they believed there was a ceiling of scholarship, that you could explain most things, but that God sparked creation. I can relate to the idea that something created the basic foundations of the universe, but only the foundation. Everything else was a natural occurrence.

It saddens me that so few young people have attempted to cultivate their spirituality. People are really quick to caste aside religion. I feel sad for people who have never felt something bigger than themselves.

Yeah, a lot of these posts kinda disappoint me. A trend I’ve noticed throughout my life is generally the “smarter” a person is, the more anti-religion he or she is. I believe 100% in God and Jesus, attend church regularly here on campus, and am in a bible study/training group in order to lead my own study next year or the year after.

I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.
-Richard Dawkins

^ Beautiful quote.

There is absolutely no reason why it is not conceivable to marvel at the resplendence of the world around us and develop a genuine admiration of one’s existence without religion.

tiff, by saying you feel sad for people, there’s an air of superiority coming from your statement. you clearly are religious, but why denigrate others for not being so; no one wants your pity for viewing the world in a different way.

also, the fact that there have literally been thousands of religions in the world, with pretty much every society since the dawn of man having one, i feel hurts religion’s credibility.

there have been people of many diff religions saying that they have seen their god or whatever, but gods tend to be mutually exclusive unless you’re a pagan.

also, if you look at a map, you’ll realize that the more developed a country is, the % of ppl who are religious is lower. for instance, christianity and islam dominate africa, but when you look at europe, you’ll see the numbers fall of drastically.

No, I do not.

The idea to me seems absurd and impossible to believe. I’ve yet to see anything credible that points to the existence of a god, therefore, I do not believe in one.

But, that’s all I’ll really say - I’m not bothered by people’s religion - I have nothing against any of them, nor do I have anything against people practicing them. I have friends from all different religions.

What I do take issue with is people who try to push it upon others.

And I’ve felt plenty of things in my life that are “bigger than me.” Just look at what humans are accomplishing in today’s world.

i dont like religion because of what it teaches, i dont know that much about any religion except christianity except the basics of the big ones, but it seems to me that most of what is involved in christianity is either unbelievable, unprovable nonsense (the ark, “miracles”) not bad things, just strange - or - morally bankrupt nonsense from a forgotten time that should have been forgotten with it (i.e. slavery, killing anyone with a different religion, gays should die) you know that kind of stuff. i just dont think religion has any place in society, we dont need it to explain how the world works and we dont need it to tell us what is right and wrong to do, because as a society, we know better than god or the bible (just read it!). also, religion has been, and still is responsible for some of the worst things ever - all the islam terror threats and wars and death going on in the middle east, the holocaust for the most part, the persecution and death and murder of millions of people all over the world throughout all of history, honestly, more people have died because of religion than any other cause. thats bad, so no, i dont believe in god because if he did exist, maybe our world wouldn’t be such a horrible, violent place, or… actually it would probably be worse. if god exists why doesn’t he do anything, why doesnt he help us in some way instead of just sitting there on his all powerful butt.

Nope and i don’t let anyone or my christology teacher tell me otherwise

Personally I believe there is a higher being than us, but not necessarily in the forms we can perceive.

Organized religion is one of the corruptions upon this planet.

Organized religion is one of the best things that ever happened to humanity.

Here’s my take:

I personally do not believe in god for the time being; however, I do think that his existence is certainly possible. So I guess I’m an agnostic.

Now, religion is a completely different issue. Wasn’t it obvious that, ever since the inception of religion, it’s just a scam? Think about it this way: Three very prudent men (Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed) came to the realization that the world would be in pandemonium if no one laid down a set of rules. That is, people would kill each other, commit suicide, larceny, lie, cheat, imbibe excessive amounts of alcohol etc. Therefore, they ascertained, someone has to scare the people into not doing these things.

If you’re still not convinced, ruminate on the following questions:
-If an omnipotent, omniscient god does, in fact, exist, why would he NEED for us to pray?
-If an omnipotent, omniscient god does, in fact, exist, why does evil exist?
-If an omnipotent, omniscient god does, in fact, exist, why would he set forth three or more separate religions with oftentimes contradictory views?

In my opinion, if god does exist, he probably isn’t expecting much from us; he simply just created. I doubt he would lay down an onerous set of rules by which people should abide.

Wow, I “feel sad” for you. Ever heard of the universe? It’s really actually pretty f***ing huge (i.e. “bigger than [myself]”) and it’s gorgeous and spectacular and awe-inspiring. And hell, it actually exists. And I love it. I don’t worship it, because it’s not selfish and demanding (or imaginary!), but I do respect it and want to know as much as I can about it. I think that tops any god that anyone believes in.

And to answer the thread, no, I do not believe any gods exist.

The way i see it is that either every religion is right or none is. The fact that there are so many different religions and cults vouching for their own “God” preaching the same thing that the chance of any 1 of them being right is almost like winning the lotto really.

Even within Christianity alone the denominations are almost completely different religions. My dad’s friend from college had gotten burnt during a chemical explosion at school and because of his religious affiliation (Jehovah’s Witness) he refused to accept blood and consequently died. I am TIRED of people of ignorant brainwashed religious “mainstreamists” that cannot think for themselves…

Also, religious affiliation is based primarily on parental influence and geography ie. Your RA is almost predetermined wrt. where you were born/grew up. With that said, how is it that, with respect to Christianity, “God” will only let Christians enter “Heaven”? What happened to those that dont know of “Jesus” existence etc.

If you trace the history of the Bible you will see that it encompasses excerpts from a library full of books and thus OBVIOUSLY things were left out, deliberately or unintentionally.

To think that the entire 6 billion human population came literally from Adam and Eve is just ludicrous.

At the same time, it is only natural to want to believe in something bigger than ourselves. I personally find solace in thinking that loved ones go to “Heaven”, however hypocritical that may be…

If there is a God he has a lot of explaining to do.

And if his answer is “it’s all a test” then let me roll my eyes in advance.

Short answer: no

JanofLeiden: “Organized religion is one of the best things that ever happened to humanity.”

How do you figure?
