Do you buy generic-brand OTC drugs?

@conmama - I would be concerned about that one, especially in light of this recent article about another timed release ADHD med, Concerta: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/17/business/generic-ritalin-drug-not-equivalent-to-the-brand-is-in-use-anyway.html. However, given the cost to you, it’s probably worth trying the generic. If it doesn’t work as advertised, then go to the brand name - and complain to Express Scripts and the FDA… and maybe the New York Times!

I rarely buy anything but generic.

I am a pharmacist. I buy generics. To believe Tylenol is laced with something more is not accurate, else they’d really, really be breaking the law and endangering people, to have an unlisted ingredient in it.

My only concern has been with the fillers used in generics. When I was taking tamoxifen I tried to keep it from the same manufacturer as there had been some issues. Anecdotal, but a concern to the BC community I was in at the time.
On more than one occasion my mom had to return a generic as it didn’t work quite the same. The pharmacy got the other mfr and all was well.

VaBluebird is correct. I am also a pharmacist. I use generics for myself and family. I do prefer the taste of some generics (Robitussin) but could probably find a good tasting generic. I am very careful about the vitamins / supplements I buy- supplements are not regulated by FDA. Much rather buy a couple hundred famotidine at Costco for same price of 20 Pepcid.

Regarding generic Allegra, I take it daily, with no problem.

My husband is a pharmacist. We buy generics every chance we get, for OTC and prescription medications. We’ve never had a problem.

@CIEE83 …thank you. I am very concerned. The problem is he has just one month before college starts to try out a new drug and he’s home. The only thing he will probably be able to tell is if there are any symptoms, not necessarily if he can study better and how much longer. Maybe at the doctors appt. He can prescribe the generic and then tell them it’s not working. I have to take another look, but I don’t think they are even letting us have the generic.

I do use generic occasionally but have stopped for and non OTC and OTC. I used to have terrible migraines during peri menopause and was taking the brand pill for that. I don’t remember the name, but it was expensive, but if taken within 15 minutes of symptoms stopped it in its tracks. Took the generic a year or so later and it did not work. I didn’t realize at the time it was a generic, so…I’m one if those who absolutely believes there is a difference and my body can tell and responds differently.

I got generic Valium in Vietnam once, that was … very interesting …

like other people linked articles about the quality of RX made in india is of great concern and several bans against certain india pharma companies have occurred.

I buy generic OTC brands for almost everything.

I also buy generic prescription drugs all the time, too (except for my thyroid meds, which do seem to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer). Come on, generic Lantus!!

My husband is a physician. We buy / use generic OTCs.
