Do you carry proof of citizenship when riding the bus on a domestic trip?

My state is out of compliance, and I never carry my passport unless I’m leaving the US. If I got stopped by a goon squad member, and I had some free time, I might pretend not to understand them.

My social security card has disappeared. Does any one know how much of a pain it’s going to be to get a new one? No one has ever asked to see it, in the last 25 years, but I guess there might be things coming up…

We don’t have enough internal medicine doctors in the US. Why is ICE going after this guy? Why don’t they go after dangerous criminals instead of doctors?

It isn’t that tough to get a new SS card but it takes time so apply ASAP. I recall having to go to the SS office with affidavits explaining that I was the mother and had lost the SS cards or something. I also brought originals to SS Office and didn’t have to leave any of the documents.

Here’s the link discussing required DOcumrntx to get SS card.

^^From that link, it sounds like US passport will kill all birds with one stone.

That’s good, I’ve got a passport.

The passport is a great document but our DMV still required other docs to get my Read ID DLicense. The cards is much less bulky for day to day carrying.

We carry enhanced driver’s licenses, which double as a passport card and are proof of citizenship. They are available in some of the states with major Canadian border crossings (NY, MI, VT, WA). There is only a slight extra cost.

Nexus cards are the next best thing because they include global entry and TSA pre-check (and special border lanes)

With the huge number of illegals I think we are eventually going to end up having to carry citizenship cards. California has really muddied the process by issuing driver’s licenses to illegals.

@mathmom - I had lost my SS card the first time I was robbed, in a bar when I was 17. Those were the days, lol. Never needed it until I moved to a new state and found out that I had to show one to transfer my DL. I went to an SS office, took one look at the line, and left. Mailed them my passport and the application instead. I got it a few weeks later.

To get my Real ID, I had to show a utility bill, among other things. They only accept gas, electric, or water as utility bills. Around here gas and electric are on the same bill so only 2 people per household can get real ID with these bills! For dependent children, you can show a school transcript or tuition bill that shows your address. My older D, who lives in an apartment that includes utilities is stuck for now. Stupid system when a utility bill is somehow harder to get or more valuable than a birth certificate, SS card or passport!

Kalamazoo isn’t exactly a bustling place full of high quality doctors. This stupid deportation will be felt by many- not to mention of course his family.

@greenwitch, the woman that refused to cooperate wasn’t being asked to show documentation, she was just refused to answer the question of where she was a citizen. In addition, she was driving through a permanent checkpoint. It wasn’t just a random, pop-up location. She made a premeditated decision not to answer the questions. It is any wonder she was detained.

I don’t know that it was a permanent checkpoint. I’ve seen them along I-10 and they often aren’t being used, much like truck stops seem to be usually closed,

Reading all this has got me wondering if my SSS card and even my birth certificate are somewhere I can easily access them. H. Has filed all our important information, including our marriage license, military discharges and VA eligibility papers, but I would be SOL if I had to quickly get hands on them without his help. I’ll have to rectify that ASAP.

I don’t have a passport. Have never traveled outside the country except for during a high school band trip to Canada at a time when passports weren’t required in order to travel there. I’m sure I’d need at least my birth certificate in order to obtain one now.

You can apply to vital records for a copy of your birth certificate. I’ve gotten several for family genealogy. I hope you have a DL because you usually have to send a photo of that when you apply!

You have to apply for your first passport in person with the required paperwork. All passports for children have to be applied for in person (they do not renew, you apply for a new one). Once you have an adult passport, you can do renewals by mail.

I always print out the application and then highlight the document I will use for that requirement, like ‘citizenship’ (old passport), SSN (old passport).

I work at a place that hires a lot of temporary workers. Everyone uses a passport for the I-9 rather than a DL and SS card or the other documents that can work.

Our state DMV said I could NOT use the passport for my SSN and made us bring in the original SS card. Complying was easier than fighting.

Passports do not have social security numbers on them, so they would not be usable for something that specifically wants a social security number document.

@HImom -Hawaii is issuing RealID licenses with the gold star as of 1/16/18.

Oh great, she gets to wait in line again!

@twoinanddone - I just got round to checking my drivers license and I do have that star thing (I first I thought I didn’t as it is fairly light but then I found it).

Last time I renewed my license I had to go home and get my green card. The first time since I first moved here 30 years ago. They told me why at the time but I’ve forgotten. I think they also told me I would not need it next time but that may be wishful thinking.
