You state that good health is reflected in a person’s looks, but provide examples of poor health being reflected in a person’s looks. I agree that the presence of certain visual cues generally indicate ill health, but my point was that the absence of such visual cues does not necessarily indicate good health – and that the “looks” that we commonly associate with good health really don’t reflect the quality of a person’s health at all.

Damn it, now I’m craving York Peppermint Patties or Junior Mints.

Had some Krispy Kreme donuts hot off the rack tonight, VH. Yummmmmm!!!

Did that take your mind off the mints?? :D

Hmmmm . . . . just looked up their nutritional value, jym. I don’t think you want to know. And you had “some” Krispy Kreme donuts, not just one.

I’m gonna go eat my yogurt and Cheerios for breakfast now. :(

Mmmmm, doooonuts! Thanks a lot, jym626. I think I need to get to Tony’s Donuts in Portland for the best donuts in the world – molasses glazed.

Beat that, all of you who don’t live Down East!

I haven’t had a donut in years but love those Junior Mints… anyway, I’m about 1/3 of a the way into the book Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Polland and I’m now getting alittle “freaked out” about what we eat and can’t figure out what to go eat for breakfast.

Yes, VH, 2 of those “hot off the rack” fresh donuts jumped fromteh box into my mouth. I don’t kow how that happened!

We sat by the big glass window and watched the donuts being made and watched them put them in the box for us. We don’t go there often, but it was suggested byt he other couple we were with, and when we got there the “RED LIGHT WAS ON” signalling freshly baking donuts. Totally bad for you, but yummm!!!

Annuddahmom–
Never had Tony’s donuts, but they sound yummy too!!

I am going up to see my dad this weekend and will indulge in my other childhood comfort food-- a chocolate brown bonnet from Carvel. Thats the chocolate softserve ice cream cone dunked in their chocolate sauce that then forms a hard coating of chocolate on the outside. Down here they dont usually have the chocolate softserve ice cream (or is it yogurt- not sure) and to me the canilla brown bonnet just isnt as good.

Oops-- were we talking about healthy food?? Me bad…

How about some fried butter? The creator of fried coke wins “most creative” at State Fair of Texas competition.

[Fernie’s Deep Fried Peaches & Cream takes Big Tex Choice Awards’ taste prize | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News](http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/090809dnmetfairfood.158a6741b.html)

^^^ Watched the video, Nrdsb4. Those are some pretty excited winners. Hope they don’t have a heart attack from all that jumping around after all that fried food! :)

That fried coke was nasty…our family of 5 couldn’t finish one order. But the same guy does a deep fried peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwich that is to die for.

We got to the State Fair of Texas every year…as a family of 5, we’ll get one order of all the new fried sensations…one bite is enough for most of them.

In a bit I’ll be passing our Krispy Kreme on the way to pick up D from cheer…will I be stong?

^My D can’t go to Wildwood without getting the deepfried Oreos…

I’m generally a vegetarian (but will nibble some meat if a friend serves it at their house). I find that to not gain weight (after your 20s!) it’s pretty much necessary to eat very, very little (as missypie noted). I will eat a plate of green beans & tomato sauce & spices for dinner (yum, right?) but will also have my ‘diet fudgesicles’ for dessert (40 cals a pop). So…I try to do a combo of healthy with a definite nod to the chocolate preference (in sugar-free/low cal form). My friends think this diet is kinda gross but it works (& keeps me in my smaller sized, non-mom-jeans for as long as humanly possible, lol!!!).

We eat healthy, but do splurge on not-so-healthy food sometimes too…the biggest challenge is my husband who was born and raised as a meat and potato man, and let’s not forget the clean your plate mentality.
My youngest daughter has a friend whose parents are very controlling when it comes to what their children eat…they are both what I would describe as skeletal in their appearance. I see problems brewing for their daughter , who when she stays at our house wants to sneak downstairs when we are sleeping to find sweets. There has been some speculation as to whether or not she may already be making herself vomit after eating …I tend to make brunch for them in the winter and indulge them with pumpkin waffles and other special breakfast foods.
Her parents make her run every morning down to a bridge and back home ( guessing 2 miles both ways ) also tell her she is getting " fat "
They don’t even seem to eat anything particularly healthy either…just don’t cook

lje62: How old is the daughter? This sounds like a terrible situation. Can you talk to the family, or at least the daughter. It’s probably NOYB, but since the girl is in your house a lot, you might want to have a chat with her.

lje62 – my hub is meat & potatoes also. We are like Jack & Mrs. Spratt – could split an entree (me: salad, bread, veggies; he: meat, dessert, anything w/butter…).

That’s nice you are concerned for your daughter’s friend. Sometimes parents of friends can have a real impact on a kid who might be troubled/having a rough time.

Wait until you finish and move on to his other and his articles. I have not eaten many things since.

^ ^
In our house what made a big impact was the film “Supersize Me”. I don’t think we’ve eaten in a McDonald’s since then. I guess seeing his transformation is a good example of what “looking unhealthy” would be like.
My D read “Omnivore’s Dilemma” for a class, and it seems you can’t eat anything.

I am trying to buy organic in stores now and spending 3 x as much – and organic produce is imported from Chile, New Zealand, etc. so it seems that organic = big carbon footprint. I was at the local farmer’s market this week, there were only 4 “farmers” there, selling stuff from other farms. Nobody could guarantee that their stuff was organic. One guy at a stand told me that “if anyone tells you they don’t spray their corn, they’re full of sh**. Everyone sprays.”

And so my organic home garden seems the only way to ensure I am not putting chemicals in my family or the environment. I was really gung-ho with this (Michelle Obama and all). We’ve had the rainiest summer on record here in the Northeast. Slugs took out 3 complete crops of lettuce, basil, carrots, and early melons, despite all my best efforts (thanks to CC advice, thanks everyone). I lost tomatoes to early blight, and then I got loads of beautiful tomatoes, 4 varieties, and have lost almost ALL of them to late blight, which means they blacken before ripening. Not a benign problem, the Irish Potato Famine was caused by late blight.

So what are we supposed to eat?

Cookies and donuts, of course!

^^^ LOL!

I heard Michael Pollan on NPR a while back – he said he basically eats lots of plants, and a little meat, here and there (I think). I don’t know whether he does organic or not; agree AnudduhMom – organic from Chile (e.g.) sounds like it might have some downsides, environmentally!

I would love it if someone could do a double-blind controlled study on organic food. Take 20,000 people when they’re born and divide them into two groups. Feed one group nothing but organic everything – veggies, fruit, grains, meats, even sweets – and the other group would eat “normally” like the rest of us. Watch them for 100 years and see what happens.

That’s really the only way to know for sure if eating organic food makes a difference.

Well, I can dream, can’t I?

I’ve had an upset stomach most of this weekend. It surely, SURELY could NOT be from the Krispy Kremes!!!
