There is a good novel on this topic - Skipping Christmas by John Grisham (also the basis for a not so good movie). A couple decides to skip Christmas because their children won’t be around and it has very funny consequences. A quick delightful read. (Sorry I can’t help myself from posting book recommendations even if this is not the good book thread!)
We’ve done cruises and often went to ski resorts
Christmas was always our time to see my wife’s parents (separately, but not geographically distant from one another) and her sisters with their kids. After the parents died, the wife’s-family holiday migrated to Thanksgiving, which had always been my family’s holiday until my parents died, too. Our kids’ partners’ families care a lot more about Christmas than we do (we’re Jewish), so it’s been a few years since either of our kids has joined us during that period. (One of the families is Hindu, but they decided early on that a Christmas tree and Santa Claus were essential parts of American culture they should embrace.)
As a result, finally, we are going to Mexico City and Oaxaca this year.
