<p>The high population of Indians in the city is due to the fact that the region had the first Hindu temple built in the US (1976) in Penn Hills. I don’t know whether that rank is still true, but I’m sure I heard/read it from a legitimate source at one point in the last decade, but I don’t have a link specifically stating the rank.</p>
<p>I don’t know about Pitt itself, two of my best friends at Pitt were Indian (both raised in the US): one Hindu one Catholic. Neither participated in the Indian student groups but maybe they made me notice things more as I did sense a substantial Indian community in city, if not at Pitt itself. Of course, two of my other best friends were Colombian, so I don’t know what that means.</p>
