I have checked in to about 12 hotels in the last 4 months - from mainstream Grand Hyatts to little B&B’s in little towns. Never asked for ID beyond the CC used for the reservation. That would be the CC that says , on the back in the signature area, “please ask for ID”
I know many people who don’t have passports. Why would you spend the time and money to get one until you need it? And what percent of Americans can afford to travel far enough to need a passport? We keep ours up to date, but face it, we are upper-middle class folks who can afford to travel.
I travel a few times a month that involves hotel stays and have always been asked for photo I.D. along with my credit card. This has covered hotels in probably all major U.S. cities in the past five years, along with more remote locations. All have required it.
I can’t think of any hotel I’ve checked into ever that didn’t request both ID AND credit card. This includes big cities, small towns, chain hotels and owner operated places.
