As an entering Math/History (MMSS) major, Class of 2015, I’m curious about summer research at NU for freshmen. My interests range from economics to biology to foreign languages.
Does anyone have any experience with research/internships at NU, possibly specific programs? What’s feasible to expect for research/internships pre-freshman summer?

Wait, PRE-freshman? There’s like 0 chance of that, but good luck.

After your freshman year there’s lots of opportunities. URG and WCAS Summer Research grants can give you two summers of funded research. ($3k each).

I don’t think there is summer research program dedicated to incoming freshman, although there are several academic orientation programs:
[EXCEL Program Helps Prepare Incoming Students: McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern](http://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/news/articles/article_742.html)
[Summer Academic Workshop: Office of the Provost - Northwestern University](http://www.northwestern.edu/provost/about/reporting-units/saw.html)
But I doubt this is what you are looking for. I know a lot of kids (including myself) who did research/internships the summer before coming to NU, just mostly not at NU. Since there are a huge amount of external internships, I highly recommend you considering this an option. Otherwise you will just have to email individual Northwestern researchers and pray. Once you come on campus, you can ask professors in person.

Also, I don’t know how you can be certain that you are the entering class of 2015…

Thanks for those ideas! They seem to be perfect. @aequitas17, where did you go to find internships? (nobody from my high school does things like this) And my acceptance is a long story, but I do have a “offer of acceptance” provided I maintain “good academic standing.”

Is that Summer Academic Workshop only for African-American students? 8/8 of the people on this page: [Summer Academic Workshop: Northwestern University](http://www.northwestern.edu/msa/programs-services/summer-academic-workshop-saw.html) look AA.

WAY more interested in how you are guaranteed acceptance weeks before anyone else. If you’re ED, then NU has zero incentive to get your buy-in. If you’re RD, then NU has no idea what the applicant pool will look like (let alone whether or not you’re applying ED elsewhere).

I understand the desire to be an overachiever, but I wouldn’t weigh too heavily your pre-frosh summer experience. Enjoy being home and your friends from HS.

Could be Questbridge- they notify early.

It’s not out of a desire for overachiever-ness. I’ve just never lived outside of my current home, and college in Chicago would be a big change. The possibility of summer classes is out the window because of finances, but I’d like to spend some time up there before the school year.

And I’ll PM you with how I’m accepted. (And it’s not QB Match. That’s binding.)

Well in terms of staying summers, the research grants I mentioned will be good for that after your sophomore and junior summers (its mostly unheard of for freshmen to win them)- that’s what I did for two summers. And you can definitely find jobs in Chicago- summer work study jobs (available only to those who qualify for work study, but unrelated to your fin. aid) also pay pretty well and are easy enough to get.

Like I said, you can email profs at local schools, or search for opportunities yourself (as your peers, teachers, look for brochures, online resources, etc). Here is a huge number of internships that you can apply to, it should help: [High School Internships](http://people.rit.edu/gtfsbi/Symp/highschool.htm)
