Do you live in a bubble? NPR quiz

How many points for being vegetarian?

Depends…are all your food organic and sustainably sourced?

@nottelling I’m talking more esoteric ingredients like kumquats, ginger, and figs. You can probably buy oranges and walnuts in your Wawa or 7-11 or Casey’s General Store.

@alh Depends on how upscale your grocery store is. I gave zero points for Dean & DeLuca. Maybe a point or two for Wegman’s. Piggly Wiggly might get you 5. No points for the gourmet pies or fancy pants cranberry sauce.

@Ynotgo Zero points for being a vegetarian. -5 for being a vegan and eating tofu for Thanksgiving.

Dang, I did miss the sweet potatoes with marshmallows!

Fresh sweet potatoes with a brown sugar/rum glaze (family favorite): 0 points
Fresh sweet potatoes with store bought marshmallows: 2 points
Fresh sweet potatoes with homemade marshmallows: -2 points
Canned sweet potatoes with store bought marshmallows: 5 points

You serve a lasagna with your turkey: no extra points, you just have some Italian heritage somewhere in your bloodline.

Hawaii is a bit of a unique case as Hawaii became part of the United States through an effective military coup against an independent sovereign Hawaiian nation. A coup sponsored by local White American businessmen and supported by elements of the US armed forces in the 1890’s.

In some ways, it’s very similar to the bitterness/hatred many of my older relatives had for the Japanese for invading their hometowns, reappropriating seized property to Japanese colonialist settlers*, treatment of themselves/neighbors as second-class citizens in their own home areas, etc during the '30s and '40s.

  • Had a very "interesting" encounter with a young Japanese friend's grandmother who felt the need to loudly rant at me about how we "damned Chinese" were bad for forcing her off "her land" in NE China in 1945. Conveniently forgetting that her family got that land through Japanese military conquest and forcible seizure from their rightful Chinese owners.

I do baked sweet pototaoes with a brown sugar sauce at home.

There are always several kind of sweet potato dishes at big family shindig but none with marshmallows.

We also always have a brisket at our dinner. And mashed potatoes. And lots of vegetable dishes.

You need a lot of food to feed 40.

IMO, a Tofurkey should get negative 5!

Agreed.

How many negative points for having duck or chicken because one’s immigrant family…especially older relatives don’t care for the taste of turkey?

Or some immigrant families who decide to add their ethnic twist to it like using curry sauces/chutney, soy-based sauces, etc when baking the Thanksgiving turkey?

Just curious as all of the above are experiences and/or my K-12 classmates from immigrant families have had when having Thanksgiving with parents or extended family.

@cobrat That’s just 0 points because you’re still eating a dead animal. And I agree with your relatives. I’d take a nice juicy Peking Duck over a drier turkey any day. Lower points doesn’t mean you aren’t American, it just means you aren’t 'Murican.

Bah, Tofurkey. The real negative points come if you make a Seitan (gluten flour) Turkey that you have formed into the shape of a turkey complete with drumsticks.

doschicos: My “Thanksgiving in a box” is from local equivalent of Piggly Wiggly. It also contains canned sweet potato casserole with tiny marshmallows. If I get 5 for the pre-cooked turkey and five for each side I am pretty sure I’m “winning”

One year I got a gourmet version of “Thanksgiving in a box” and no one really cared for it as much. They missed “my” green bean casserole, just like what we all remember from our childhoods.

It is kinda like the only time I like hotdogs are at baseball games. Then they are the best thing ever!

@doschicos. Great quiz. Finally one I aced. 25 points  Do we get extra points if they got it with a bow instead of gun? I don’t really know if one can bow hunt turkeys, but I always figured deer with a bow were worth more points than with a gun.

I’m really just all about the desserts and green bean casserole. I don’t care where the bird came from or what kind of veggies are served (other than the green beans  )

I planned a Tofurkey Thanksgiving once (just because.) Worst meal I ever made. Fried baloney would have been better. But it’s been a delightful memory we laugh at, ever since. D2 is sitting here and says, “It was disgusting.”

We had both vegetarians and a bunch of folks from Louisiana here for thanksgiving one year. We had both tofurky and terducken. How many points is that??

@srystress I personally would love to reward someone with extra points for using a bow, but given the mission of the quiz, guns are much more in keeping with the rewarding of high points. Because guns.

“I planned a Tofurkey Thanksgiving once (just because.) Worst meal I ever made. Fried baloney would have been better.”
Not for a vegan! My goodness, baloney is about as far as you can get from a tofurkey! But having baloney on the Thanksgiving table would get you some major points especially for spelling it baloney instead of bologna.

Oh, yes! And thanks to youtube you can watch exciting bowhunts of wild turkeys.

^you can hunt them in my front yard from my upstairs porch.

but I am not plucking a turkey. I’m getting the box.

Turkeys aren’t the smartest or quickest of this planet’s animals. As long as your aim is true, I don’t think it would be that challenging.

I scored a 29.

^^Winner winner, turkey dinner! We raised turkeys a couple of summers. A big, strong Tom is more difficult to catch and get into a truck bed than one might think. No bonus points for trucks in this quiz, either?
