Interesting, since their TVs are among the best.

I would never purchase another GE refrigerator-- ever! Their icemakers WILL fail you at some point. My current GE french door model had the icemaker replaced after just 5 years. During my whole life, GE friges are the only ones I’ve ever owned. The first two by choice and the last three because they came with the house.

I’m probably jinxing myself, but out 18 year old GE Profile has had no ice maker issues. It DID need a new compressor about a year after we got it…fully covered and it’s been fine since.

I am getting a Samsung side by side when this GE dies. I’ve decided my new dishwasher will be a Kenmore Elite.

Question: When renovating a kitchen and getting all new appliances, is there any advantage to getting same-brand appliances throughout – e.g., all GEs, or all Samsungs?

Sometimes there are “package deals” from certain vendors for the appliances. I’m not sure if you actually save money or not, but they sure make it SOUND like you do. Check out the PC Richards flyers in the papers.

I don’t think matching brand names matter at all. When we built this house, we got a Maytag dishwasher, Whirlpool stove, GE Profile fridge, and GE some other model microwave. All white.

Replacements will be Samsung fridge, Knemore Elite dishwasher, and stove/microwave to be determined…all white.

Okay -how’s this for frustrating…the Samsung refridgerator I want is regularly $2,800. It’s on sale for $1,799 but only in stainless. I want it in black, for which I will need to pay $1,000 more!

My2sunz, I assume the one you got for $1,799 was stainless. That’s a good deal. I’m going to wait it out another week or so and see if the black goes on sale (I’ve looked at numerous websites). If not, I’m going to need to decide whether to pony up the extra $1,000 just for the color. A few hundred dollars wouldn’t bother me but $1,000. That’s crazy.

As to whether you need to buy all the same brand appliances, be careful. A friend ended up with different ‘shades’ of stainless steel when she used different brands.

I think if you use something like “barkeepers friend” on the stainless doors, it won’t streak.

Interesting. Never thought about that. And I am going with stainless.

^When she pointed it out to me, it was very obvious that one stainless steel was more ‘warm’ looking than the other. Although, I doubt I would have noticed if she hadn’t drawn my attention to it. If the appliances aren’t located close together, then it probably doesn’t matter. In her case, the fridge was pretty close to the oven.

That’s why I’m sticking with white. White is white.

^^white is white

Uhh, you haven’t been in a paint store for a while, have you thumper?

I’ve had stainless steel & my H likes it, but I like white- and I’ve been slowly replacing my major appliances with white, although small appliances are chrome.
One thing I noticed is that features have trickled down into the lower price point of refrigerators in the last five years. Which is handy because I don’t need one larger than 20cu ft. But I think I will really like the french doors…

I wanted a French door refrigerator- never did need to replace my 25 cu ft top freezer 20 year old one left behind when we moved- and researched them periodically. We “inherited” a 6 year old side by side and can’t justify replacing it (redoing the kitchen cabinets, counters, etc more important). Fortunately brought a 5 cu ft chest freezer with us. I understand the frustrations. I also know that two people often need a larger refrigerator to store all of the leftovers for a few days. Plus a wide variety of foods you never bought when the kids were around. I’ll ask about reliability in a few years (if I still visit the site)- good luck.

I have a 2-year-old GE “matching” washer and dryer (same model numbers except for a zero on the end of the washer) in white. The washer is creamier than the dryer and you can definitely see the difference. Probably made in different countries.

As far as GE refers go… my 10 year-old GE Monogram built-in refrigerator in my last home had 13 service calls, with a variety of problems not the least of which was the ice maker. Cost to replace: $8600.

I used a kitchen design place when we built our house 12 years ago. They gave customers discounts on Miele appliances–the more Miele brand appliance you bought the bigger your discount. I got a Miele dishwasher and washer/dryer. Ended up with a SubZero fridge and freezer–like them both.

We used my moms14cu ft fridge until it died about five years ago.( she had moved to a condo)
We weren’t ready to replace it, so we found a chest freezer that worked ( free), and have been using a fridge meant for a wet bar that is about 5-6cu ft.
It actually is great. It doesn’t take up much room & things don’t get lost in it.
But I really do need something bigger, especially since the kids are bringing their friends home more often.
I don’t think we’ve ever used GE, mostly use Kenmore, which were often Whirlpool.

There ARE different white paints, yes. But I have already looked at appliances and the white appliance paint really is white, not cream. And it all matches. I confess to not being a stainless steel fan.

MomLive - Yes I did get the stainless steel and I also noticed that the black one - same model - is about $1,000 more. Crazy! Maybe for the same reason that I was told that the counter depth fridge is more than the same model in regular depth - because they don’t make as many. Still… Hope it goes on sale for you!
