Do you say "two thousand-ten" or "twenty-ten"?

Wow . . . where is William Safire when we need him??? In his absence, can anyone identify the new “Martha Stewart” of correct pronunciation/terminology? I will now start obsessing about this issue!

2 thousand 10

Just did this with my Level 1 Berlitz English student on Friday.

“There are two ways to say this. Two-thousand ten, or twenty-ten. Both are OK.”

This is what happens when you are adjusting your language to a new millennium. By the time we get to next year, I expect that common usage will be “twenty-eleven”. Fewer syllables almost always wins over more syllables when it comes to speaking.
