Dodge College First Year Housing

Hi Shakespearfan,

Thanks for sharing your D’s experience. It is very much appreciated. I agree with your observations that many roommates ended up not having the same FFC. They also used questionnaires to match up students personalities as part of the room assignment process. I have not seen anything on the web on what is planned for this year. The idea of the FFC is to get know well a group of maybe 100 fellow freshman with all different major & backgrounds by taking a “foundational college” class together with discussion and at parties in the dorm to solidify these relationships. Maybe some of the new fall freshman can call the housing office and let us know how assignments will be made this year.

“The Freshman Foundations Course (FFC) is the foundational portion of the Chapman General Education program. All entering freshmen enroll in an FFC section connected to a larger learning community and participate in an orientation program that includes a shared summer reading. The FFC course engages students in interdisciplinary, university-level critical inquiry and reflection. FFC courses focus more on critical engagement, exploration and communication related to complex issues than on mastering a body of material.” quotes from this website:

One needs to remember that Dodge College students make up at most only 15% of the Chapman U student body. What I have heard from my S and many others is that students want get to get know students from all majors at Chapman U for at least during their freshman & sophomore years. That Dodge students do not want to be isolated from the rest of the Chapman community (note: as you know Dodge College is located a couple of blocks away from the main campus). So rooming together with only Dodge students might be great for some Dodge students but not for the bulk of them from what I have heard. That is why many Dodge students join Fraternities & Sororities as well in order to have the complete college experience and not be isolated over at the film school. If the Filmmaker Village was built it would have been primary been filled by juniors, seniors & grad students attending Dodge in my opinion. I just wanted to add these thoughts to this subject that you brought up Shakespearfan. All the best.
