Well if just the title of “tier” is bothering you U of H is now officially a tier one school…i know a lot of intelligent people going/will be going to U of H but all of them are going into the Honors college. If you truly like UH over UT then just go but make sure you do the honors college because if u don’t it could very much be like 13th grade.

UH is though a commuter school so the school culture will be much more subdued than say UT. Although you may love Houston, keep in mind the stark difference in campus life between these campuses and where you would be most happy.

Hey guys… I too have a similar query… See, i’ve been accepted in Univ of Sout Florida (Honors college plus scholarship covering 40% of fees), UF and Purdue (no scholarships, nothing). And as an intly underrgad, the monetary offer is reaalllllllyyyy appealing. But i’d like your take on which is better recognised for politics and Economics… Also, i intend to go to grad school, so does it really matter if i go to a “lesser reputed” univ when i’m applying for grad sch?

I looked into U of H when I was applying to schools, and actually looked into Mass Comm. If you go to U of H, the Business school and HOtel and Management schools are the ones that are highest ranked… I think U of H seems to be a wonderful school, but after applying, I have been met with a lot of difficulties in regards to my application. My transcripts that I sent on the 25th of January never arrived, they messed up my peoplesoft number, and I paid the application fee to my first number. They switched the number and are now asking me to pay 75 dollar in application fees again! So I have decided that noooo way am I going there after all their screw ups… Although it academically may be in high standing, their staff and helpfulness are the pits! I have been accepted to LSU and NOTHING compares to the help I have gotten there… They have all been super throughout my app process! Mizzou also was pretty decent ;)

SIngapore: If you are an international I would go with USF because it is rare for international students to get anyy financial aid at state schools unless the student is an outstanding applicant! Definately go to USF. You will not regret it
If you are looking into grad school later on it does not matter much what school you attend only how well you do while in school :)

Houston is one of the most underrated state u’s in the country (so is Austin - IMHO it’s on par with Berkeley and Michigan, but that’s another story). I briefly considered it because one of my favorite authors teaches there (Farnoosh Moshiri.)

“IMHO it’s on par with Berkeley and Michigan”

I think that’s a pretty bold claim. I agree with you that UT Austin is a great school that tends to be underrated but Berkeley and Michigan (especially Berkeley) are in their own league when it comes to public schools.

Tiers matter to people who are tier oriented. If it doesnt matter to you, it won’t matter to anyone else, particularly if you shine in “performance” once on the job. CEO’s, CFO’s, Generals, Executive Directors, Chairmen(women), and leaders in all walks of life come from schools up and down the “tiers”.

Do your best. Have fun. Stay out of trouble. Focus on your studies. And good luck.
