Does ability to pay $5k more make a difference?

Don’t you have to mention all income, taxable or not?

The amount is not consistent. It depends on the amount of clients. If he gets no one, we have no income from there. But if we has a few clients, we get income from there. If we have to pay $5,000, then he will probably reach out to more clients for consulting. I can’t exactly mention an amount that is not at all consistent and sometimes not a source of income at all. On a few good and strong offers, he can earn upto $7,000 otherwise it’s usually about $2,000, not more.

But if he made money from it last year, you’re required to report that on the CSS.

If you’re talking about reporting money that he could make next year, it’s impossible to report that - there’s no space on the CSS for future income that may or may not exist.

Actually, there is, but I don’t think it figures into the actual financial aid equation. The future (anticipated/expected) earnings question is probably just there to provide more context to a family’s overall financial situation.

I did mention about $1,000 from private consulting but if it’s required, my father will reach out to more clients to get a higher income to help for my college fee.

What do you mean, if it’s required? Is that a serious question? Of course all actual 2015 income is required to be reported on the CSS Profile!

No, an extra 5k won’t help your chances. You’re still in the category of high need. Nor would an extra 10k.
If they love your app- which you cannot predict- they may not care so much about this level of need. BUT, you have no idea how your app comes across and what competition exists from your country or similar. or whether they pulled in a few from your country over the past few years and want to focus on others this time.

They look at your 2015 income and projected 2016, plus assets they ask about. In the US, we’re supposed to report all monies earned, on our tax forms.

I am an international student and my country does not have tax.

Btw, I didn’t say if required to report. I said if required to help pay my college fee. I would suggest you read what I said. I DID mention $1,000k that came from consulting.

Still won’t help.

I know. I probably will just leave it. Thanks for your help!

Kom- a little tip in case you end up studying in the US- it’s often nice to say “thank you for trying to help me” before you post your irritation at those of us who did not understand your post or your follow up clarifications.

nobody is trying to be mean. Everyone is trying to help.

But your situation is not unique, and the old-timers here know that every year there are international students posting that they can’t afford to return to their college for junior year- can they transfer and get enough aid to pay their tuition (often not- the best aid is reserved for students who enroll as Freshman) or can they transfer to a community college and still get a BS (generally not since they’ll have exhausted the number of credits they can take at a community college) etc.

So we are trying to keep you out of trouble. College in the US is very expensive, and the aid formulas are not designed to apply to every situation all around the world. If someone in the US did that it’s called tax fraud. (or maybe robbing a bank).

Perhaps say “thanks” before you write “I would suggest you read what i said”. Your posts are confusing but people are really just trying to help.

It does not matter if it is taxable income, and I think you know that. You aren’t allowed to leave it off the profile just because it was not taxable, and the instructions say that. You need to accurately report last year’s income. So you should make the correction for that.

Okay. I’ll write a mail to them.

I’m not saying what you should or should not do, but I wouldn’t let anyone on a web board push me into doing something. I imagine people make small mistakes often on the profile. Since you can’t just go in and modify it, I bet many people just leave it. If it’s a big mistake, sure, I believe it should be fixed.
