Does anyone have Summer Stock Experience they can share? Straw Hats/NETC etc?

@TinaBC, Are the NETC notices going out today for either acceptance or rejection?

@entertainersmom - Several actors I know heard they got slots this afternoon and it seems like MT emails are going out now. I have only heard of “yesses” so far though.

All musical theater applicants should have a response by now. Acting Only notifications have not gone out yet as of 6:24pm 2/9/20

Thank you

Thank you @TinaBC - very much appreciate your being willing to answer questions for everyone and I hope all auditions go smoothly!

TinaBC: How many theaters attending NETC 2020 have spots for straight actors? Looking at last year’s Theaters, most list musicals for summer 2020. Do theaters with musicals audition straight actors for speaking roles their shows?
Lastly, will there be Shakespeare theaters selecting actors (not intern/apprentices) at NETC; which ones?

Thank you SO MUCH!

You might need to tag @TinaBC @JeanneDArc - using an @ sign at the beginning of the name tags the user so they know you’ve addressed them!

@TinaBC @JeanneDArc Tina: I posted questions about 2020 NETC auditions yesterday, but have just learned about tagging names at the head of a note, so they are noticed. Super grateful for any information!

Thought I would chime in about the two summer stock auditions (A1s and UPTAs) my D has attended. She was passed through for SETC when she was a sophomore, but ended up not attending as she got a summer contract offer before SETC. She would definitely attend SETC in the future as she knows one of the coordinators and many of her friends have had good success there.
She attended A1s last year, and while she really enjoyed the workshops they offered, she didn’t get much interest. She felt the theatres were looking for “dancer dancers” and she is a tapper and strong mover. Actually, none of the people she knows received any offers from A1s. Because of this she decided not to attend A1s and go to another audition conference this year. (And actually, having read about the A1s this year, it sounded like a bit of a mess with most of the theatres that claimed were going to be there- didn’t show, etc. so glad she didn’t attend.) They have some things they need to fix.
D attended UPTAs last week so I can give a good description of what occurred. It was extremely organized. It is split between the Sheraton Memphis downtown and Playhouse on the Square. The main audition is at Playhouse and the callbacks are done at the Sheraton. They are not close to each other so they have 2 shuttles running back and forth (about 15 min ride). The auditioners check in at Playhouse and are given a packet of all the theatres (83 I think this year), their seasons and what they are looking for this year. Very helpful. Some theatres are there only certain days and some just get all the auditioners materials/video of auditions, but all that info is given to the auditioners so they know who is in the room. My D ended up auditioning for 64 theatres. They started the first day and did #1-100 before lunch and then continued after lunch until about 5pm. They even have a phone number you can call to see where they are in the auditions to make sure you don’t miss your number. If a theatre is interested in you, you will find out when they post the auditioners numbers/names in a ballroom back at the Sheraton. Those were posted about half an hour or so after each group of 25 auditioners. So audition at Playhouse, shuttle back and wait for the postings. There is a possibility of being asked to attend the dance call by a theatre and/or an acting callback. They also may just keep their resume. If they are called back, then they run around to the theatre’s rooms at the hotel and try and sign up for a callback spot. They may not always get a spot if it the times are already full.
The dance call warmup starts at 5p, and dances are taught starting at 6pm. There are 3 options, a mover call, a jazz/ballet call and a tap call. You can learn all but are only allowed to perform 2. They check the callback room again after the dance call to see if anyone additional theatre calls them back.
Then the insanity starts. Callbacks can start earlier in the day depending on how many reps are there from the theatres, but most start after the dance call ends at 8pm. Most of the theatres do callbacks from 8p-11p. Some a little later. I call it insanity because if you have a large number of callbacks as my D did (over 20), there is NO way to do that many in such a short period of time. They are literally running all over the hotel. They have to prioritize (which is where the packets come in) and hope they can get a spot with their top choices. UPTAs frowns on theatres having auditioners come back the next day as then that takes up spots for the current days auditioners, but my D was asked by a couple theatres to come back the next day as she couldn’t fit in everything that one night.
She had a great result from UPTAs and would definitely attend again if given a spot.

Oh! And I forgot to mention, Taylor Louderman was at UPTAs watching auditions because she is going to be directing a show. So that was fun.

Hi, @JeanneDArc

I’m sorry… it has been a busy couple of weeks working with getting all of the auditionees settled in their time slots and getting things off to the printer!

Most of our producers have representatives in both the Musical Theatre and Acting Only rooms. They will hire straight actors for non-singing roles and the straight plays in their season. Cincinnati Shakespeare and Tecumseh! are both new this year and looking to hire for Acting Only. Berkshire Theatre Group, Missoula Children’s Theatre, Jean’s Playhouse, New London Barn Playhouse, Peterborough Players, etc. etc. have non-musical shows planned.

@TinaBC Thank you so much for this information! I am grateful to you and your team for organizing these auditions; what a wonderful opportunity for students starting out in this field! BAL actors!

@TinaBC One more question about NETC auditions: Should students staple their resumes to the backs of their headshots? Thank you!!

My daughters is at NETC today, break legs to everyone else who is attending!! Hope it’s a fun and successful day!

@janne006 Hello! I am a theater minor and am doing a presentation where I look at Midwest Theater Auditions and StrawHat Auditions. As part of this, I have to talk to one person for each, or one person who has done them both. Do you think your daughter would be interested in helping me out with this? I could email her, zoom her, or talk to her over the phone to ask her a few questions regarding her experience at each audition. If not, I understand, but I do hope that she will be willing to help me out! If you can get back to me by 11/14/2020 letting me know, that would be great!

Old thread. Closing. Feel free to start a new thread for 2023-2024.
