If you have a raging sinus infection, then you might blow something out after rinsing, but the pressure of the water going in isn’t enough to ‘push’ anything out. It does thin out the mucous so that it’s easier to blow out other stuff… which is what you want to do. That’s why several of us have mentioned keeping tissues around.

But just for a normal cold, it’s just thinned out mucous that you’re blowing out.

jym… we need to skype so I can demonstrate this for you… it’s not such a big deal. You can carry on a normal conversation while you’re irrigating.

If I was pouring stuff up and out my nose, you can be darned sure I am not going to invite someone in the bathroom with me to converse with!! That neti pot adventure seems like a solitary activity in my book.

Really now, it’s not that weird. If you really want to know weird, some people in India do this with a thread. Not only that, they also pass it from their nose and out their mouths. Not only that, they re-use the thread.

So, as you can see, neti pots are pretty tame.

Skype a demonstration? That is maybe the most memorable idea to come out of College Confidential. And I cannot carry on a conversation while neti-potting. Let alone position the computer in such a way that I can be over the sink and observed at the same time.

MG- you cracked me up. You story reminded me that one of my kids used to gross every one out by running a Ramen noodle up her nose and out her mouth, I guess she better not flinch when I suggest a neti pot!

Good grief… I’m not asking anyone else to provide the entertainment. I would do the demonstration if it meant easing someone’s hesitation. Using it makes that much of a difference, that I want others to comprehend it.

By the way, the first time I saw it done was many years ago in a yoga class, demonstrated by the instructor.

Don’t watch the you tube videos. There are some really weird ones out there. Just follow the directions on the pot and it will be fine.

And as long as you don’t use too much salt, it will actually feel good and soothing. Try it, you’ll like it (as the old commercial used to say).

Finally got the courage to use it ( I used the squirt bottle, not the neti pot) and it wasn’t too bad. Big improvement in my ability to breathe, I feel much less stuffed up now. I would say it was uncomfortable, but worth it.

After I purchased one and used it frequently for about a year, I no longer take Zyrtec. I believe it cleaned out my sinuses and the end result: it
cured my allergies.

It took me a little while to get the technique.
