Does applying to a different major increase/decrease acceptance chances?

UMass-Amherst admits by major. The acceptance rate for CS is in the 30’s compared to the overall rate in the 60’s. So better than some on the list, but not a guarantee.

Exactly….it is one of the easier admits on that list and it’s still not a safe admit for CS.

And that 30% acceptance rate for CS is skewed upwards by in-state students.

Indeed. I recall last cycle there were a few kids online who treated UMass CS OOS as a “safety” and were shocked when they were not admitted.

And to top it all off, OP is a high-need international student, so UMass will be unaffordable anyway.

For that matter, while most privates allow international applicants to apply for aid, CMU does not. So cross that off the list

I know various other people here are trying to get this message out, but it seems like it constantly needs repeating.

High need Internationals interested in undergrad in the US really need to abandon everything else and focus solely on where they actually have any shot at getting the offer they would need. And even then, it may not work anywhere.

Fortunately, CS is now available almost everywhere.
