Does "BC" stand for "Backup College?"

At orientation we were told that BC had a 19% acceptance rate this year… hardly a “safety school”.

Yeah right. 19%? I dont believe that. BC is great, but its not an ivy… 19% is probably the amount of applicants that are ATTENDING. lol.

Entering class is 2250 out of 24000 applicants. So it’s actually about a 9% attendance.

Actually… it might have been 19% because I know nobody who actually got into the school. Usually they take about two or three people from my school… nope all of us waitlisted (even a girl got into NYU for international relations). this year was exceptional for all schools, and BC is a popular school or as we say the “hot school.” and Chrisso it may not be an ivy, and its ranking may not be that good, but have you ever visited BC? It became my first choice over all other schools (even schools that were better than it)… I’ve known kids who have turned Cornell down for BC, must be the spirit…

Ok, this is one of the dumbest topics of conversation I have seen on this forum probably. If you think BC is a quote, “backup college” or “too low” for your standards, don’t apply! You’ll be the one missing out, so stop trying to put false information on a forum where thousands of perspective, current, or past students gather to seek new information. BC is by no chance a backup college or whatever you called it. A backup college is one in which you KNOW you’ll get in if you apply. And if that’s BC to you - kudos to you, we’ve found a genius here.

It was literally impossible to get in to BC this year - I believe it was their all-time toughest year. My school ranks as one of the top public schools in America, and we always send a handful of kids to BC. This year, just three of us were accepted. One of them had a family legacy, so if you really wanted to say it - just two of us got accepted. I also know people who get in to more prestigious schools than BC, only to get rejected by BC. That, my friends, is most definitely not a sign of a “backup college.” I was fortunate enough to have gotten admission this year, and I really look forward to going.

Those SAT’s that you have listed in this thread are not good enough for BC, plain and simple - so there’s no point to even think of BC as a backup school that will take everyone and anyone. Look at the rankings, even if they are flawed or whatnot. BC is rising every year, and just look at all the schools that are behind BC.

Lastly, for those of you who enjoy using this forum to brag about your college acceptances and whatever else, two thumbs up to you- you are officially amazingly cool. Everyone on this forum cares about your personal success, especially if its making fun of others for choosing a school (sarcasm). You may be going to a prestigious school, but your character, my friend, is far from prestigious.

I’m out like a fat kid in dodgeball.

"Nearly 22,500 candidates honored Boston College with applications for 2,250 openings in our freshman class. We admitted 32% of them. "

That’s from the bc.edu…

Those were last years admission statistics if I’m not mistaken. My orientation leader could have of course been wrong with the 19% number, but I also think the rate this year is considerably lower than 32%, perhaps mid to high 20’s. I am led to believe that your 22,500 and 32% numbers are wrong because there were over 24,000 applicants this year, taken from my admission packet.

The 32% was in fact last years numbers. This years numbers are lower - according to everyone at BC orientation and the admissions office. Not sure how anyone can argue against numbers

Thank you jazzx10 (Ellen lol)

I have visited BC to whoever asked me that… its a really great school and I know its difficult to get in, I’m not saying that. But if 32% was last year, I don’t see how it could go all the way down to 19% in one year. I’m sure it has decreased since last year, but I doubt by that much. MOST colleges have decreasing acceptance rates because more and more people are applying to college in general. That would mean that BC had almost DOUBLED their applications in one year.

point is that BC is not easy to get in to, nor is it anywhere near that. so therefore, to answer the question - NO, BC is not a backup college by any means. end of discussion.

good morning, good afternoon, good night.

I was told by an Admissions Officer that the admit rate was 26% and the yield rate (number of admitted students that matriculate) was 36%.
