Does everyone have their popcorn ready for Harry & Meghan?

Only tangentially related, but KC3 has given the Duke of Edinburgh title to Edward, but Edward’s son James will not inherit it.

For anyone interested, the BRF website has been updated;

The Duke and Duchess have two children, Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

I’m always amused when “Dukedoms” are bestowed. I don’t know it makes me want to laugh. Or when they are “created”. So, what do they get? Any land, money, peasants who now must pay rent?

Bragging rights. And a key to the secret clubhouse.

Lol! It sort of amazes me how so many British citizens like this and think it’s great that their taxes pay for it. Sure, they’re fun to watch for free.

It certainly cements their childrens’ status as public figures for the Press. Princess Anne was wise to keep her children untitled and in obscurity. They seem like well balanced adults.

Eugenie and Beatrice also seem to be well balanced, happy adults and they were Princesses from birth.

Well, I’m really not liking Spare much at all. Maybe it will get better when we get to the part where he meets Meghan?

Yes they were. They also have been subject to a lot of nasty press stories about their weight, their intellect, their choice of dress, etc.-far more than their untitled cousins. Comes with the territory.

My reaction to Spare exactly. I looked forward to the section where Harry meets and marries Meghan etc., but that too fell short. In retrospect, my favorite section is the first one - before the military and before Meghan.

My favorite parts of Spare were the beginning chapters and the end chapters. I skimmed alot of the middle of the book.

I’ve read the first two sections; just now getting to the part where he meets Meghan. I’m finding it a long slog so not sure when I’ll finish.

I totally get the part about skimming the middle. Of course he’d want to include his time in the military, but so much detail! Page after page on things like the inner workings of a helicopter cockpit. Curious editorial choices.

Overall it reminds me why I don’t like these sorts of “tell all” books. I decided to read this one to see if I would find Harry more believable. (Short answer so far: yes and no.) He acknowledges his memory is more visual than specific dates and dialogue. But this quote really stood out to me, especially the part I bolded:

“Whatever the cause, my memory is my memory, it does what it does, gathers and curates as it sees fit, and there’s just as much truth in what I remember and how I remember it as there is in so-called objective facts.”

Good grief, that kind of statement drives me bonkers. It’s nonsense.

Reminds of an adage, that people remember how you made them feel more than they remember anything you actually said.

Harry’s nod to “recollections may vary.”

Absolutely. And conversations go deeper than just who said what words. Sometimes an exchange goes like this: Person 1 said “X”. Person 2 heard and interpreted it as “Y”. Person 1’s intention had been “Z”. Communication is not always straightforward, to say the least.

I still like Harry and wish him the best. But, he still seems very stuck in the past and is certainly capitalizing on his trauma and recollections.

The laughing gas thing was the strangest thing for me in the book and actually surprised me that it made it into the book. Just strange, immature. Not surprised the nurse was laughing along with his antics, he was the entitled Prince!

In the context of a private therapy session, that kind of truth may be enough. But if you’re saying things publicly and I’m an outsider trying to decide if I believe your truth, I need some sort of objective confirmation before I just accept what you say because you say it’s true.

I’ll wait to finish the book before deciding what and how much of Harry’s truth I believe.

Well, a gentle reminder, and I hope I don’t trigger any of you  Harry’s recollections, although they may vary from ‘so-called objective facts’ :innocent: are, after all ‘his truth’!
